This year, Cheam Common Junior Academy will be celebrating ‘Wear Red Day’ as part of 'Show Racism the Red Card' by asking pupils to come to school wearing an item of red clothing to show awareness of this great cause on Friday 22nd October 2021. ‘Wear Red Day’ is a national day of action which encourages individuals to wear red to raise awareness of racism and to support the education of this in schools.
Our aim at Cheam Common Junior Academy is to further develop pupils’ understanding of all discrimination in society through their learning experiences, and teachers will be discussing the event with children at an appropriate level of understanding. This will allow children to develop their understanding of all prejudice, discrimination and to celebrate diversity.
Should you wish to donate to this cause, please visit the Just Giving page by clicking here.

Each week, our fantastic eco-councillors, made up of children from across the school, meet to discuss various issues to help protect our environment and to help raise awareness through a range of activities and events held throughout the school. Here is a short report, written by our Eco Team, to update you on all their fantastic work!
As part of the Eco Council, we have undertaken an environmental review to see how eco-friendly Cheam Common really is. After monitoring and reviewing every part of our school, we are pleased to announce that we scored a brilliant 46/60 in our review - well done everyone! Our findings have revealed that we are doing well at many topics: Biodiversity, Healthy Living, Transport and Water. However, there are still areas that we need to work on to improve our environment. This is why we are going to focus on 3 topics this year: Energy, Litter and looking after the School Grounds. We will let you know our plans for the year once we have completed our Action Plan!
From the Eco Council
Well done all, we look forward to bringing you further updates throughout the year!

As part of an exciting pilot project with Sutton United Football Club, Year 5 children were invited to their football grounds to receive a behind the scenes ground tour, meet the manager and players and understand the history of football as part of the new Sutton United Primary Schools Curriculum Project.
Working in partnership with Directors from across the LEO Trust, including Mrs Shirley (Computing & Technology), Miss Potter (Maths) and Mr Perrott (English), an array of learning opportunities and teaching resources have been produced to engage, inspire and motivate our sporting superstars of the future.
The brand new learning zone will go live in a few weeks and we cannot wait to share the link with you in future newsletter editions. You can find out more information in an exclusive newspaper article as featured in this week's Sutton Guardian! Well done Year 5!
Earlier this week, children from our Year 6 HI5 Netball team took part in the SSP Sutton 'Back to Netball' festival. Competing against an array of teams from various Sutton based schools, children enjoyed demonstrating their newfound skills and abilities, thanks to week's of practise.
Fun was had by all children as they demonstrated the core values we would expect from all our sporting champions: respect, fairness and showing positivity and encouragement.
Our Year 6 Hi5 Netball team achieved fantastically throughout the tournament, winning four of their matches and drawing one. Well done to all!
Just like 'Maths, No Problem!', children came up with their own set of characters to help explain the concepts and provide detailed explanations of how to solve each of the challenges.
It is always great to see our children demonstrate their mastery of maths and to be able to find innovative and creative approaches to showcase their work.
Well done Year 5!
A huge thank you to Thomasina and her mother!

Meet Chaya, considered by some a thief, to others she is a no-nonsense, outspoken hero, who leads her friends and a rambunctious elephant on a noisy, fraught, joyous adventure through wild jungles where revolution is stirring. Advised by her best friend, Neehal, not to steal the Queen’s jewels, our plucky heroine refuses to listen - even when the repercussions of such actions prove dire for all involved. However, Chaya has good reasons to steal, even if they lead our plucky heroine (and her friends) into the plethora of dangers that lurk in the shadows of the jungle, whether it be anacondas, leopards, lizards or even gun-toting bandits! Whatever happens, Chaya’s actions and determion will keep readers enthralled from page to page!
Saturated with the colour, this delightful tale is set against a beautiful, picturesque backdrop of Sri-lanka, where learning to accept different cultures and testing friendships is explored through the actions of Chaya herself. Filled with humour and good-will, Chaya has a good-heart and always willing to do the right thing; a perfect hero to inspire both boys and girls alike.
For those that enjoy Rudyard Kipling's ‘The Jungle Book’ or Phillip Pullman’s ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’, then this is the perfect new addition for you!
Throughout the week, children have loved listening and reading their brand new class reading books! Each book has been carefully selected to help children within their writing, providing wonderful ideas, grammatical features and exciting new vocabulary!

Be apart of an exciting exhibition telling a story of climate change and how it has impacts all of us. As part of Sutton's Environmental Strategy, children can write and send a 'letter to earth', explaining how climate change has affected us all and what we can do to make positive changes for our future. Alternatively, draw, design and create your very own 'perfect earth' showing the local community what you think the world should be like!

Artwork Competition
Is your child an aspiring young artist? Enter our competition – and they could win an amazing trip to the Houses of Parliament!
Our Find Your Balance: A day in my digital life art competition, in partnership with Google, is asking children to draw a picture showing how they find a healthy balance in their online and offline lives.
We are looking for a colourful and creative picture that shows how your child makes sure the internet works for them. It could also reflect how you share – and balance – your digital lives at home.
We’ll be choosing the top 50 entries to be displayed in the Houses of Parliament in London – and the winners will be invited to attend an event in Westminster to see their artwork on display. We’ll also be selecting two national winners (one aged 5-7, one aged 8-11) who’ll have their trip to London paid for .
For full terms and conditions, check out further information here.
