CCJ Digital Leaders at Shawley Community Primary School!
This week, our Digital Leaders went over to Shawley Community Primary School, Epsom to share the benefits of using Chromebooks to enhance their learning. Accompanied by Mrs Shirley, Director of Computing and Digital Skills, children demonstrated the variety of apps and programmes both teachers and children could use within their lessons. We look forward to continue working with the children at Shawley to help them on their digital Chromebook journey. Well done to our Digital Leaders for being such fantastic ambassadors not just for our school but for LEO too!
Jeans for Genes at CCJ!
On Thursday, children from across the school came to school wearing their favourite pair of denim jeans to help raise money, as part of 'Jeans for Genes' week in order to help raise awareness and money to help vulnerable children in the UK affected by a genetic disorder. We would like to thank you for your contributions and kind donations and we cannot wait to share with you the final total!
Extra Curricular Activities & Clubs at CCJ!
This week saw the launch of many of our exciting new clubs and sporting activities before and after school. Children have enjoyed taking part in a variety of clubs, from football, netball and yoga to computing, art and even our popular Lego club. Well done to all the children for your wonderful effort and a huge thank you to our staff for putting on many of these clubs! Please keep an eye on further updates as we continue to add more extra-curricular activities throughout the term!
LGFL Ohbot Launch with LEO Academy!
We are excited to share and announce the launch of a brand new website as part of our growing collaboration with LGFL, 'Ohbot: Near Space'.
After the success of last years 'Reading Zone Live' relaunch with members of the LEO English team, LGFL have been working with Cheam Common Junior to design a brand new exciting and interactive website. During the summer term, LGFL (London Grid for Learning) teamed up with Mr Perrott (Director of Maths) and Mrs Shirley (Director of Computing and Digital Skills) to collaborate on creating a space-themed website based on the OhBot's adventures into Near Space .
Planning an array of English and Computing lessons, Mr Perrott and Mrs Shirley have been trialling using the smaller, class based Picoh Robot to much success. Now, thanks to their contributions, the website has gone live and we cannot wait for our children to use across the school.
This term, children in Year 5 will be using the resources and we cannot wait to bring you more updates as children continue to explore their learning this term as part of their space topic, 'Space Adventurers'!
A Week in Pictures at Cheam Common Junior Academy!
Across the school, children have been enjoying getting stuck into their brand new topics. Each year group have started their new topics in a variety of fun, engaging and practical ways, whether it has been using our VR Headsets to explore outer space as part of Year 5's topic, Space Adventurers, to electing their very own political class party in Year 6 as part of their exciting new topic, 'Champions of Change'. Check out the photos below to see all the wonderful learning that has been taking place across Cheam Common Junior this week!
Dates and Upcoming Events!
LEO Recycle Week at CCJ!
Next week is LEO Recycling Week (20-26th September). In school the children will be learning about the importance of recycling throughout the week in a variety of activities.
We are having a ‘Green’ mufti day on Thursday 23rd of September to raise money for our sustainability projects. We would love for children to wear green clothes or an item of green clothing to celebrate the week. We are asking for donations to pay for new litter pickers for our Eco Squad and to fund our Forest School area. Any additional funds will be used to purchase sustainable resources to reduce our consumption of paper and plastic laminating pouches.
In line with the aims of the LEO Sustainability Working Group we are pleased to announce the arrival of our new crisp packet recycling bin. The bin is located in the main reception area by the office. This has been arranged to provide our school community with the opportunity to easily recycle packaging which is not widely recyclable in doorstep collections. Any brand of crisps can be recycled.
Please remember to empty your crisp packets completely and flatten them before placing them in the bin.
Thank you for your support!
Letters to the Earth Competition!
Be apart of an exciting exhibition telling a story of climate change and how it has impacts all of us. As part of Sutton's Environmental Strategy, children can write and send a 'letter to earth', explaining how climate change has affected us all and what we can do to make positive changes for our future. Alternatively, draw, design and create your very own 'perfect earth' showing the local community what you think the world should be like!

Year Group Parent Workshops
This upcoming Wednesday, we will be emailing our virtual year group workshop videos to all parents. All of our virtual presentations will be prerecorded by our members of staff. This will give you a better understanding of how to support your child at home and strengthen our home school partnership.
Should you have any follow up questions during any of our virtual presentations, please feel free to either email the school office or talk directly to your child's class teacher, who will be more than happy to help.

Information and Resources
School Dinners and Packed Lunches
At Cheam Common Juniors we want all of our children to become ‘healthy learners’ and we recognise how important that the food that our children eat is to this. Our school meals are designed to be appealing, varied and balanced, meeting Government guidelines for nutritional standards in schools. School dinners cost £2.35. Click here to check out the Autumn School Dinner menu and speak to our school office should you wish for your child to have a school meal.
At Cheam Common Junior, we realise some children prefer to have a packed lunch from home. We ask that the lunches provided are healthy, balanced and appropriately sized. Please visit the NHS ‘change for life’ website on the link below for guidance on packing a healthy lunch box: Healthier lunch boxes
Children can also bring in a healthy snack for break time.
Click the links below for our Autumn School Lunch Menus!
Birthdays & Celebrations!
When your child celebrates their birthday, we would ask that the child donates a book to the library instead of bringing treats for the class. The book will help us to grow our library and ensure we are promoting healthy eaters. Alternatively, should you wish to provide your child's class with a treat or snack, we kindly ask that it is something small and healthy. If you are unsure, always consult your child's class teacher.
Parking on Kingsmead Avenue
Please remember to be respectful of our neighbours by driving and parking responsibly in the surrounding roads.
If you want to report illegal parking in the roads around school, please contact Saba (Sutton Council's parking enforcement contractor) on 0208 661 0096.
Information and Resources
National Coding Week
National Coding Week is an annual event that prompts people to learn new digital skills or share the skills they have. In previous years we have had Businesses, Libraries, Hubs and Schools getting involved.
We are all volunteers and so this year has to be different. We won’t be holding events but we are throwing out a challenge to anyone who wants to have some fun!
- If you are new to coding and want to have a go, then check out your local library or your local college which may have evening classes. You could, of course, start by reading through our suggestions: Coding – Where do I Start?
- If you are an individual, why not use the hashtag #NationalCodingWeek and let us know how you got into coding / a digital job so you can inspire others
- If you just want to have a bit of fun after a challenging year why not take part in our challenge!

Well being
The next Sutton Dyslexia Association Parent/Drop In will be on Monday 20th September at Oaks Park Cafe, Carshalton between 9:45 and 11:30am. There is a free car park at the Croydon Road entrance to the park and there is an outdoor, covered eating area at the cafe. Parent and Carers are welcome along for a chat, meet other parents and exchange ideas. Members of the committee will be there to chat too.
Children and young people’s lives have changed dramatically because of the coronavirus. With social distancing measures children will be spending more time at home and online.
And while the internet is a great way for children and young people to stay in touch with their friends and keep busy during lock down, it can also bring risks. Now more than ever it’s important to talk to your child about staying safe online and about the apps and sites they’re using. Click here to visit the NSPCC website to find out more information.
Netflix is hugely popular across all ages but there have been concerns in relation to age ratings and the type of content that is recommended to viewers. Like many other services, Netflix uses algorithms to determine what you might like to watch based on viewing history, what you have liked etc.
Since last year, Netflix has been working with the BBFC and 100% of the content on Netflix is now age-rated to BBFC classification standards. It is the first UK streaming service to accomplish this. Click here to find out more information.
Sutton Council are setting up a free school uniform shop and asking for donations of good quality school uniforms for children aged 4-18 years.
