Cheam Common Junior Academy: Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 8UT
Tel: 020 8337 1844
Over the past week, we have seen lots of cars causing congestion on Kingsmead Avenue as well as some dangerous manoeuvring where families are crossing. The volumes of children and families walking and cycling to school are put at risk as cars pull up in the road or outside the school gates. Please can we politely ask all parents to walk to school where possible and where it is necessary to drive, please park on nearby roads and walk the rest of the way. A reminder that the gate closes at 8:45am. Please leave yourselves plenty of time to avoid the rush, especially in the winter weather.
Thank you for your support to ensure our families are safe. Miss Gunner
A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our harvest collection this year. Maddie, Yvonne, Esah, Ruby, Alex W and Alex K helped pack and load the donations ready to be delivered to Epsom and Ewell Food Bank. Your support is greatly appreciated.
The London Youth Games have relaunched their virtual games and every Monday will release a new challenge for children to take part in and represent the borough.
This week the challenge was Rugby. Children had to see how many times they could get the ball into the target using 5 attempts.
Well done to Esah with the winning total of 4!
Next week's challenge is linked to Volleyball.
From Thursday 1st October, we are celebrating Black History Month .
We are excited to be celebrating it throughout October and have some exciting activities planned. Each year group are focusing on a significant individual from Black History, ranging from sports personalities to political figures. They will also share a range of stories, celebrating achievements and important aspects of Black History. Miss Austin and Miss Carberry shared an assembly with the school to help children to understand the purpose of celebrating Black History Month.
Well done to everyone at Cheam Common for taking part in the five-day Walking Challenge 2020: HEALTH AND WELLBEING.
Strong hearts, healthy bones, increased muscle strength are all well-documented outcomes of walking, but the benefits for the mind are just as powerful.
We hope that the children enjoyed stepping up to this challenge!
Steve Welding, a former police officer, will be joining Senior Leaders across LEO to deliver a workshop for parents on online safety. This will take place via GoogleMeet on Wednesday 14th October at 7:30pm – 8:30pm. You can access the workshop here.
The theme of this World Mental Health Day is: The same, but different.
One thing we all have in common is that we all have feelings and we all have mental health. Mental health is just like our physical health, we have to look after our bodies and our minds to be healthy.
One way to support your mental health is doing a muscle relaxation activity. Have a go at one of the activities below and see if you feel more relaxed!
Imagine you have a ball of slime in the palm of each hand.
Breathe in and squeeze the slime as hard as you can.
Breathe out and open your hands letting the slime spread across your hands.
Repeat a few times.
Colour breathing
Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Close your eyes if you wish.
Imagine your favourite colour or the colour which helps you feel calm.
Breathe in and imagine you are breathing in this colour.
As you breathe out, imagine blowing a bubble made of this colour.
Next week are our final Bikeability sessions for Year 6.
Bikeability works over 2 levels; Level 1 which is playground based and teaches your child to ride a bike correctly and safely. Level 2 is based on quiet roads in the local area and allows your child to experience cycling on roads.
If you have signed up to one of our courses your child must:
Bring their bike to school on every day of their course with a padlock to lock it in the bike shed
Bring in a helmet as well as a tracksuit and trainers to change into before their sessions
Commit to attend every session
A waterproof coat would also be advised. Children may also want to bring a pair of gloves.
Bikeability courses are designed for children who are confident cyclists and would like to learn how to cycle on the road.
On Thursday 1st October, George, Jack, Aashi and Aurora from Year 6 represented Cheam Common at the Science Quiz National Finals. Last year, these 4 children took part in the quiz championships at the Science Museum, IMAX and progressed into the National Finals with their high score. The team took part in the virtual quiz against schools all over the country. They did incredibly well and finished 9th overall out of 442 teams; a huge achievement! A special mention to George and Jack who finished 4th and 15th out of 1768 children who took part from the start of the competition!

Returning to CCJ once again … the 144 Club is a club but not as we know it! To be part of the club all you have to do it is prove you know your times tables. Children will be given the chance, once a week in their classes, to complete a times tables test. They have to answer 144 questions (72 for Year 3) in less than 5 minutes. If they are successful they enter the 144 Club. They will receive a certificate and a badge. Once in the club, children have to take the test again, every term, to secure their place. The aim is that they beat their own personal best each time. Want to find out more? Speak to your child’s class teacher.
Congratulations to the following children who are already members of the 144 Club for this term:

Nessy has launched a brand new Youtube channel - for teachers and parents!
Dyslexia Explained contains short videos to help teachers and parents understand dyslexia and how best to advocate for the children in their lives.
For one of our first videos, we asked Mandy Nayton, CEO of AUSPELD how to talk to children about their dyslexia:
Whether you’re new to the school or if you’ve been with us for a while, what better way could there be to meet other parents than to get involved with the fun events that we hold here throughout the year.
Each class has their own ‘Friends Class Rep’. Their role is to help to promote and organise volunteers for our fundraising events throughout the year.
The acronym “PTA” may fill you with fear and you may have images of baking, giving up lots of time and probably even giving lots of money. However, what we need from parents is just a small amount of time, working around you and your commitments. If there were enough of us who were willing to give up 1-3 hours a YEAR, that would make all the difference.
We run various events like cake sales, discos and quiz nights. We always need volunteers at these events, but we would only ask that you give up an hour or two of your time.
This term, we have lots of fun and exciting ideas for ‘virtual’ fund raising events so that even in the current circumstances we can still raise much needed funds for the school. If you would like to find out more or can offer any help, please contact: Friends_CCJA@outlook.com
If you need to contact your child's teacher, remember you can email the year group directly using the following email addresses:
ccjy3homelearning@leoacademytrust.co.uk
ccjy4homelearning@leoacademytrust.co.uk
On Thursday 5th November, there will be a special bonfire night lunch.
If your child does not usually have a school lunch on a Thursday, please email the school office to order this special lunch by Wednesday 14th October.
Please click here to view the school dinner menu for after half term. Please let the school office know what days your child would like a school dinner.
If you would like to contact Mrs Townsend or Mrs Hart about any matters relating to Inclusion, including Special Educational Needs you can email them directly at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk or alternatively make an appointment through the main school office.
Why not check out our weekly recipes and try them out at home?
INGREDIENTS
You need just three ingredients for these rich chocolate pots -
150ml double cream
150ml whole milk
300g dark chocolate
Makes 6
METHOD
Put 150ml double cream and 150ml whole milk in a pan, place over a medium-low heat and bring
almost to the boil. Meanwhile, finely chop 300g dark chocolate and put in a large bowl. When the
milk and cream are steaming but not quite boiling, pour over the chopped chocolate.
Leave the mixture for 5 minutes to melt, then stir gently until smooth and fully combined.
Pour the mixture into 4-6 small ramekins (about 125ml) and chill for 2 hrs. Once set, serve with a
dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of grated chocolate, if you like.
This term sees the return of our Battle of the Books reading competition. Each year group has an updated list of books recommended for their age group.
Every week we put a synopsis of one of the recommended reads in our newsletter.
This week's book is 'Malamander' by Thomas Taylor and is from the Year 5 Booklist.
Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, knows that returning lost things to their rightful owners is not easy – especially when the lost thing is not a thing at all, but a girl. No one knows what happened to Violet Parma’s parents twelve years ago, and when she engages Herbie to help her find them, the pair discover that their disappearance might have something to do with the legendary sea-monster, the Malamander. Eerie-on-Sea has always been a mysteriously chilling place, where strange stories seem to wash up. And it just got stranger...
How many books will you read?
Will you complete the whole list?
Remember once you have read one of the books, you need to write a book eview and show your teacher to get your bookmark stamped.
You can view your child's year group lists below:
Our weekly news feature.
This week...Can you create a storm in a glass?
You will need;
Shaving cream
A large glass
water
Food coloring
A spoon
What to do;
Fill the glass 1/2 full with water
Spray some shaving cream on top of the water to fill the glass to ¾ full.
Use your finger or a spoon to spread the shaving cream evenly over the top of the water. The top of the shaving cream should be flat.
Mix ½-cup water with 10 drops of food coloring in a separate container. Gently add the colored water, spoonful by spoonful, to the top of the shaving cream. When it gets too heavy, watch it storm!
How does it work?
Clouds in the sky hold onto water. They can hold millions of gallons! The layer of shaving cream is our pretend cloud in this experiment. The shaving cream layer can also hold onto water. Clouds can’t keep storing more and more water forever, eventually they get too heavy. When that happens, the water falls out (precipitates) as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Try more water and less shaving cream or less water and more shaving cream. Which one looks more like a drizzle, and which one looks like a downpour?
Why not ask your child how they used our Word of the Week?
Year 3:
irritate
Year 4:
aggravate
Year 5:
infuriate
Year 6:
exasperate
