On Monday 3rd February, our Cheam Common Junior Choir were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to take part in the Young Voices Celebration Concert at the O2 Arena in London. We were all very grateful to be given this amazing experience as it was a once in a lifetime occasion. We all really enjoyed our thrilling night and are really appreciative of Ms Greene for teaching us everything we needed to know. Also thank you to Miss Gunner, Mrs Lester, Mr Hedger, Mrs Young and Mrs Dallimore for looking after us that day. First, the choir got on a coach and drove to the O2. As we got there at about half past one, we had our lunch straight away. After 30 minutes, we were in the O2 and having our rehearsal. We couldn't believe how many children there were (over 8000!) and how high up we were sitting! Something that excited us during the rehearsal was watching The Voice winner Rutti perform and watching dance group Urban Strides.
There were so many other songs that we sang too, even songs in different languages and we had so many dance moves to do too! Once we had finished rehearsals, we had our tea and went back to the arena for the real thing. Slowly, the parents started filling in. At first, we could not see the Cheam Common parents but eventually we spotted them waving at us! When everyone was in the O2, the concert started and we began singing all of the songs, the pop medley being our choir's favourite. We also watched a group of awesome dancers and we tried to join in too! Most of us by the end were extremely tired but happy to know that our mums and dads were proud of us and we had put on the performance of a lifetime!
On Tuesday 4th February, the netball teams played their second matches of the Spring term. This match was against Holy Trinity. We knew we had a tough game ahead of us.
Match 1 - A team
After last week’s victory, the team were feeling confident however, before the match began, we thought about areas the team still needed to focus on such as spaces and dodging. The game started quickly, the opposition were strong and intercepted the ball well. Cheam Common had to work hard to keep possession of the ball and had to constantly use dodging skills to be free. Fortunately our shooting duo were in fine form so although the chances were limited to shoot, every time we had the opportunity, we scored! By the end of the first half we had scored several goals. After a quick reminder about spaces and dodging, the second half was possibly even tougher than the first with Holy Trinity having more chances to score. However the team really dug in and ended the game with another victory with a score of 6 - 2 to us. Well done team, a hard won victory!
Match 2 - B team
This week there were some new members in the team however they worked really well together. The match started slowly but as the girls' confidence grew so did the accuracy of their passing. They began to talk to each other and soon they looked like a team that had been together for weeks! Again the shooting duo were in fine form so most attempts on goal were successful! We were ahead, like the A team, by the end of the first half. The second half saw some slick, accurate passing as well as more goals scored, some from quite a distance. The game ended with another excellent victory to Cheam Common with a score of 6 - 0 to us!
Next week is our first away match of the season at All Saints Benhilton on Wednesday 12th February. Good Luck!
Last Wednesday, 8 children represented Cheam Common in the National Science Championships at the Science IMAX in London. We formed two teams with two representatives from each year group in a team.
There were 35 multiple choice questions that each team had to answer using their electronic handsets. They were against the clock and had to try to score maximum points between them. After every 5 questions, the current leaderboard would be displayed on the screen. Both teams were able to stay in the Top 10 for most of the quiz, with Team 1 always lingering between 2nd and 4th place.
The questions were very challenging - there were many teachers and parent in the audience unable to be confident in their answers.
At the end of the final round, the screen displayed that Team 2 finished in 12th position and Team 1 finished in 4th position. We were delighted with these places.
Team 1 missed out on 3rd position by 20 points. The quiz master announced that our score was the highest runners up score he had seen and that many winners from previous heats hadn't scored as highly. We were hopeful that we still may get to represent Cheam Common in the National Science Quiz Finals at the Dominion Theatre in June.
Miss Gunner was delighted to receive the news on Monday evening that we were successful and are now through to the finals in June.
Congratulations to both teams and Good Luck to Team 1 for the finals.
On Friday 31st January, our Girls’ Football team travelled to Sutton United to compete in their next league fixture against All Saints Benhilton. The girls performed well throughout the game, welcoming the addition of Amela, who was taking part in her second game of the season. Adele managed to keep a fantastic clean sheet in goal and our defence remained solid for the entirety of the match. With goals from Amela (2), Evie, Aniya, Isla and Amy, we finished the game with a 6-0 win. Amela was voted Girl of the Game by her teammates. This result places us second in the league, with one match of the season remaining. Good luck to the girls for the rest of the season.
On Tuesday 28th January, our Girls' Football Team travelled to Waltham to take part in the Chelsea FC Foundation Premier League Stars Tournament. We were drawn into a group against Cranmere School, The Grenville and Manorcroft. In our first game, we played extremely well and managed to beat Manorcroft 1-0. Following an unfortunate loss against The Grenville, we finished our group with a 5-0 win against Cranville. Although we didn't make it through to the semi-finals, we then took part in a variety of friendlies, in which we were unbeaten. Well done to Ailah, for only conceding two goals in five games! We had a great day and are looking forward to the next one!
Last week, our Year 5 Football Team played in the U10 Boys' Surrey Cup Quarter Final against Heathfield Junior, Twickenham in a very exciting cup tie. In torrential rain, our boys dug deep to secure a 4-3 win in an incredibly close game. They are now through to the Semi Finals and look forward to an away tie v St Mary's Oxted on Thursday 27th February. Can we reach a third successive U10 Surrey Cup Final?
Well done boys and good luck for the Semi Finals!
Last year, a group of Year 4 children launched their own history club after being inspired by finding some old photos of the school in Miss Gunner's office. Since then, they have met regularly with Mr Hedger to research the history of the school further and explore the archives. They began by sorting and categorising the photos and have continued this year to create a website to showcase everything they have found out.
Last week, as part of this project they interviewed former headteacher, Mr Easthope. He told them about former pupil John Major who became Prime Minister of the UK in 1990.
They then met with Abby from Sutton Heritage to find out more about the archives before ending their week by meeting Maxine and Odette who were both pupils at Cheam Common. Maxine recalled how her year group had been doing the fundraising for the swimming pool throughout their time a Cheam Common but it was put in the year she went to high school!
History club are going to put the interview and the information they found out onto their website which they are hoping to share with the school by half term.
Thank you to all of our guests for sharing their knowledge and experiences with the children and making the history come to life!
We are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2020. World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading.
On World Book Day your child will be taking part in lots of fun activities. Such activities will include: Drop Everything and Read!, Mystery Storyteller, sharing favourite stories with pupils of different ages, as well as fun book quizzes and other book related activities.
On this special day, your child can come to school dressed as their favourite character from any book. The dressing up possibilities are endless: Postman Pat, Oliver Twist, Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, The Gruffalo, Harry Potter etc.
In addition to the above, there will also be a book-themed competition.
This year we are asking the children to create a ‘Book in a Box’, where they can represent any story of their choice… inside a box!
See the photographs below for some ideas.
All entries should be handed in to your child’s class teacher by Monday 2nd March with their name and class clearly shown.
Winners will be revealed on Thursday 5th March and will receive a book token.

Our Scholastic Book Fair will also be running in the school hall on Tuesday 11th February and Thursday 13th February during Parents' Evening. Every book we sell earns the school rewards to purchase more books for our classroom libraries. Please support our school and buy as many books as you can!
Here is our attendance round up, with figures for each class since September. Our target for our attendance is 97%.
Well done to 3H, 4S, 3B and 4SM for their ‘gold’ attendance.
We hope we can get each class to a 'green' level of attendance for next week.
As the winter weather continues, lots of children may develop colds and coughs. Wherever possible, please send your child to school. Most often, once the school day is underway, children perk up. If they are too unwell to be at school, a member of the school office would contact home.
Please remember that our school gates close at 8:45am. Children who arrive after this time are missing a significant amount of learning time in the classroom as they begin fluency activities from the moment they arrive.
If you would like to discuss any issues with regards to attendance then please see Miss Gunner.
We are pleased to inform you Mrs O'Brien-Skerry, a scientist and Cheam Fields' parent governor, will be delivering a practical and informative session on engaging children with SEND with science.
The session will focus on how you can help your child engage in science while having plenty of fun using household ingredients!
She will also be discussing the opportunities available for children with SEND at a range of London Museums.
The session will be held at Cheam Fields Primary Academy on Wednesday 26th of February at 5:30pm.
Please click here to sign up and inform us how many parents we need to cater for.
We look forward to seeing you there!

The International Yeti Collective by Paul Mason
Prepare for an epic adventure with big feet, an even bigger heart and plenty of laugh out loud moments that will have you turning the pages with glee!!
Ella is in the Himalayas with her uncle excitedly searching for the infamous yeti. But what seems like the adventure of a lifetime is cut short when she realises that these secretive creatures might not want to be found.
Unbeknown to Ella, she is being watched from a distance by a rather curious creature. Tick, a young yeti in training, knows it's against yeti law to approach humans. So when some arrive on the mountain, yet, why does he find himself peering through the trees to get a closer look? What Tick doesn't know is that his actions will set off a series of events that threaten the existence of yeti all over the world. What can he do to make things right? Just when all hope seems lost, help comes in the most unexpected form.
With plenty of laugh-out-loud funny and unexpectedly moving moments, The International Yeti Collective sees the bigfooted beasties under threat due to a chance encounter gone horribly wrong. Paul Mason writes with great verve and humour, making this thrilling adventure a warm-hearted wonder to read.
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
