At the end of last half term, Year 3 were very excited to take part in their Evacuee Day! We all began the day entering the school dressed up as Lucy, Peter, Susan & Edmund from ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. We then made evacuee labels to show who we were and where we were being evacuated to. Throughout the week we drafted emotional letters from one of the characters to their mother back in London. On Evacuee day we then wrote up our letters as postcards home.
We looked at historical artefacts from the past and discussed what they could tell us about life as an evacuee. It was really fascinating looking at a gas mask and what sort of toys they had. We were also interested in the national identity card all evacuees had to carry.
One of our sessions involved listening to real radio broadcasts & newspapers from the time of WW2. We then used the chromebooks to record our very own news broadcast, instructing the nation’s children to evacuate to the countryside.
Finally, we were incredibly excited to make our own syrup loaf cake! We started off by learning about how food in WW2 was heavily rationed. Then we followed a recipe to make a syrup loaf using only ingredients that were available through the rationing system. Luckily, they were delicious!
This week, we have launched our optional home learning grids. These are also available on the school website. Each year group have set a range of tasks that children may like to complete. These tasks will immerse children with the topic they are learning about and will also support their learning. There is no expectation to complete all of them or to complete one each week. The children can choose which tasks they would like to do. Please show your work to Miss Gunner!
On Wednesday 26th February, the netball teams played their fourth match of the Spring term. This match was against Green Wrythe Primary, a school we have not played before.
Match 1 - A team
After last week’s loss, we were all determined to play our best from the very start of the game and the team practised dodging as well as shooting at the start of our warm up routine. From the very start of the game it was obvious that this was going to be a tight match. However the team showed a lot of determination and fight even after we went down a goal. By the end of the first half, the teams were even at 1 -1. After a quick half time reminder about spaces, the team went out and battled hard. The second half was end to end and the whole team worked well together.
However at the end of a great game of netball, the teams could not be separated and the score was 3 - 3.
A great game and excellent team work, well done.
Match 2 - B team
This week there were familiar faces in our team as some of the other B team players had been chosen to play at a High 5 netball tournament. The team dominated the play with some strong performances from some more experienced players and some excellent shooting. The first half ended 3 - 0 to Cheam! However the opposition had a team swap around at half time and were much stronger. The second half was a tougher match for us however the girls rose to the challenge and played some great netball and shot a couple of incredible goals. The game ended 5 - 0 to Cheam, a much deserved win, well done to all the players.
Our final match is a home game so fingers crossed for a win when we play Manor Park on Wednesday 11th February! Good luck girls!
Our Year 6 Boys' Football team were looking to make the Premier League Primary Stars final for the second year running after reaching Molineux last year. This year's venue if we were successful would take place at Vicarage Road, the home of Watford FC.
The regional round took place at Kent County Cricket Club (Beckenham) with 5 boys' teams competing from the Boroughs of Sutton, Croydon and Bromley. The tournament format was a league of 6 with every team playing 5 games and the resulting winner would be who tops the group after 5 games. Having drawn our first game Vs Cheam Park Farm (0-0) we went on to win 3 games in a row (5-0), (1-0), (2-0) meaning we were on 10 points with the final game to go. Our final game was against Scotts Park (Bromley) who had won their 4 league games meaning this final game was the battle of the top two teams, with the winners going through to the next round.
Despite dominating possession and creating a handful of chances, with a minute to go we were hit on the counter attack and Scotts' Park scored with the last kick of the game to send us crashing out at the final hurdle.
Despite losing our final game, we still place second in the group stage which is a fantastic effort considering the standard of teams in the group. Well done boys for another fantastic effort!
A group of excited Year 4's took part in their first external tournament of the year travelling to Brixton to take part in the Sports' Fusion tournament.
We were seeded in a group of 4 (Cheam Common, Telferscott, Wyrill, and Walnut Hill). The group game results were as follows:
4-1 Win Vs Telferscott
3-0 Win Vs Wyrill
3-2 Win Vs Walnut Hill
We then proceeded into the Semi Final where we were drawn against Wyrill. An emphatic 6-2 result meant we were through to the final and would play Walnut Hill who we only narrowly beat in the group stages.
Despite a slow start and going 2-0 down, the boys showed fantastic character to battle back and draw the game 2-2 meaning the game went to a penalty shootout. Although we missed our first penalty, we scored our following 2 and with Zeke making a fantastic save, the penalty shootout went to sudden death. Walnut Hill missed so Freddie.S stepped up to calmly dispatch his penalty and see Cheam Common win the tournament!
A fantastic display from the boys despite the wet conditions. We came back from losing positions twice showing great character and nerves of steel at the end to win the final on penalties! Well done boys we are very proud of you!
St Raphael’s Hospice is looking for individuals, local companies and businesses to give back this Easter!
St Raphael’s Hospice care for people with terminal illnesses in Merton and Sutton. They need £6 million a year to run, relying heavily on public donations and fundraising as only 24% is received from the NHS.
Every year they make Easter hampers that they ask the local community to raffle to raise funds. Hospice mascot Lenny needs help to fill as many hampers as possible with Easter Eggs of all shapes and sizes.
Cheam Common would love to be able to support this great cause. If you and your families can help by donating an egg or box of chocolates for the hampers, you can drop them into any of the 10 St Raphael’s charity shops, hand them in to reception at the Hospice in London Road or alternatively, Mrs Young will collect them from the school office on Monday 16th March.
The hampers will be raffled through local businesses and community groups. All proceeds will ensure that St Raphael’s can continue providing expert end of life care every day. Lenny hopes to have enough eggs to make 40 hampers and also give every patient and their family a visit from the Easter bunny on Easter Sunday.
On Thursday 27th February, thirty lucky children from Year 5 got to see The Philharmonia Orchestra play at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank. They played many pieces such as: Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven, Appalachian Springs Aaron Copland, Tahiti Trot (Tea for Two) by Dmitri Shostakovich and Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The show was called 'Celebrate' because it was Philharmonia’s 75th birthday and Beethoven’s 250th birthday. Many schools came to watch the magnificent orchestra play their fantastic tunes and wonderful harmonies. First, the children had lunch in the Royal Festival Hall where the orchestra had played. The concert was arranged by Rachel Leach and conducted by Jessica Cottis. We had a great time!

Researchers from the National Trust and the University of Derby did a survey that found:
-70% of children say they rarely or never watch clouds, butterflies and bees.
-People who regularly connect with nature are more likely to tackle the crisis facing wildlife.
-Being connected with nature - noticing natural phenomenon everyday - is linked to higher well being.
The National Trust has launched a new campaign to boost people’s connection with nature, which includes a new week by week guide to help people improve their relationship with the natural world and take action to help halt wildlife declines.

For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year, like last, we'll be continuing to focus on cocoa and the special role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes. All items with this logo mean they are Fairtrade!
To mark the end of Fairtrade Fortnight, today we hosted our own cake sale at break time selling cakes made by our Eco Council and the fantastic cakes made at home by the children and their families. All of the cakes were made from Fairtrade products. Thank you to everyone for supporting Fairtrade.
Yesterday, we celebrated World Book Day and enjoyed a number of activities such as dressing up, sharing stories, filming our book reviews and creating our own stories.
Below you will see a selection of the fun we had. Well done to everyone for taking part. We had some fantastic costumes!
Here are more of the great entries we had!
Well done to everyone! You made it extremely hard to choose the winners!

Orion Lost by Alastair Chisholm
Lost in space. Alone. Stranded. Left floating through the galaxy of stars, prepare for an adventure where the only mission is to survival, whatever the cost! Orion Lost is the brand-new science fiction story that will thrust you deep into the darkest depths of outer space and on a voyage of perseverance, determination and courage.
Thirteen-year-old Beth and her friends are aboard the Orion as it blasts off from Terra Ventura (Earth to you and me) and heads off to explore the vast solar system before them. Within the dark, outer atmosphere of outer space, the transport ship Orion is four months out from Earth, when catastrophe strikes. Knocked from its course, the ship and everyone on board has been left stranded in deep space. Suddenly it's up to Beth to navigate through treacherous and uncharted territory to reach safety. But a heavily-damaged ship, space pirates, a mysterious alien species, and an artificial intelligence that Beth doesn't know if she can trust means that getting home has never been so difficult.
Hugely gripping, with incredible twists and a fast-paced, action-packed story, this is an unputdownable science fiction adventure - perfect for fans of the recent Star Wars trilogy!

Does your child love Lego?
Join us for a relaxed and unstructured session of Lego building at our Lego club for primary aged children (4-11 years). Lego play is structured, systematic and predictable so is especially appealing to those with autism. It is multi sensory, helps build imagination and improves fine motor skills.
This is a recreational Lego club rather than Lego therapy, although there will be plenty of opportunities for collaborative building and social interaction. Refreshments are available throughout, and a light tea will be provided at the end of the session.
The club is for autistic children of primary school age. Siblings are welcome too as long as they are also of primary school age. Parent/carers must remain on the premises and be responsible for their children at all times. Space is limited and therefore a place must be booked in advance for each child attending, ie including siblings.
If the Club is full up please add your details to the waiting list and we will contact you if we have any cancellations . Very last minute cancellations will be offered on a first come, first served basis through our Members Support Facebook Page.
£3 per child
