Friday 12th July
Sama and Melinda (3A) would like to invite every child in the school to embrace their traditional culture on Friday 12th July.
Sama and Melinda came to teachers with their idea in May and have been busy at work ensuring that we can celebrate the diverse range of cultures that we welcome here at Cheam Common Junior Academy.
On Friday 12th July, your child is welcome to come to school dressed in an outfit that represents a culture which is important to them. This may be traditional religious dress or something inspired by their heritage or family.
At lunchtime, Sama and Melinda (along with Miss Kelly) will be hosting a workshop with children in traditional dress about the reasons behind their outfits.
Saturday 13th July, 11am-2pm
We are excited to be celebrating the Cheam Common Summer Fair on Saturday 13th July.
If you are able to give up one hour of your time to volunteer on one of the stalls, we would be incredibly grateful. These events can't run without the kindness of our parents and communities.
If you are interested in volunteering, please see the many options and sign up here.
Miss Kelly was delighted to have received over a hundred entries to the London Maths Week: Map Design competition.
Our overall winner was...
Nyah (Year 4), who created a multi-layered design of central London.
She will receive an Amazon Voucher and certificate as a prize. Well done, Nyah!
Below, we have listed the year group winners. These children will receive trophies to commemorate their fantastic designs.
Mr Greaves, Miss Mills and Miss Eldridge have been busily organising Olympiad events for each year group. Each class has been allocated a country from across the world (see below for your child's class) which they will be representing in the sporting event. If you would like your child to wear that country's colours, that would be wonderful. If that is not possible, please do not worry!
Year 3: Wednesday 26th June ✅ - Winners: 3T (Hungary) 🇳🇱
Year 5: Tuesday 2nd July ✅ - Winners: 5M (Brazil) 🇧🇷
Year 6: Wednesday 10th July
Year 4: Friday 12th July
Your child should come to school wearing their PE kits on their year group's day.
Over the next week, you are invited to visit Sutton Library to view our LEO Arts Exhibition.
Children from across the school, as well as the trust, have been working hard on various art projects in their lessons this year, and this event has been organised by Miss Maclean to celebrate their imagination and creativity.
Throughout the rest of the term, we will be inviting many children to have a slot on our radio station.
Every week, four Green Ticket winners are chosen to take part in Friday's session.
🎵 Amazon Music 🎵
Pupils across the school started by requesting the songs they would like to be part of the radio station. If any parents would like to donate to our Amazon fund to purchase music for the radio then please gift any amount you can on an Amazon E-Gift Card to ccjradio@leoacademytrust.co.uk. We would be very grateful.
The Adventures of Rocky: A Tale of Friendship and Courage
Aadya (5G) has had a book of hers published on Amazon! Aadya has always demonstrated a passion for reading and writing. We are so proud of this accomplishment. We are going to buy a bookload of copies to share across school.
If you would like to purchase a copy of Aadya's book, you can do so by following this link.
Tuesday 9th July
On Tuesday afternoon, our Year 6 Girls' Football Team will play in the Sutton Borough Cup Final, held at Shawley. Their opponents are Barrow Hedges.
We wish our girls the best of luck!
As the weather is warming up, please ensure that children have sunhats and a water bottle in school. Please ensure that children have applied sun cream in the morning.
Uniform reminder
Please ensure that children are wearing school shoes, or plain black trainers.
Additionally, a reminder that our PE kit consists of the following items: White T-shirt, red shorts or black/navy tracksuit bottoms and trainers. Our black training top and bottoms are also optional items in our PE kit.
Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.
We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!
It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.
🧬 Science Quiz Finals: On Friday, our Science Quiz Team had travelled to Oxford to take part in the National Quiz Finals, against schools from across the country. Due to road closures and traffic in Oxford, the team had no choice but to turn back without taking part in the finals - along with manhy other teams. However, this did not deter our team! On Monday morning, Mildred, Nivan, Aadi and Bitna took part in a virtual version of the quiz. After a gruelling hour, our team managed to finish in 5th place, out of thirty schools. We are incredibly proud of their resilience and determination!
🏏 Surrey Cricket Day: On Monday, some Year 5 children travelled to the Kia Oval to take part in the Surrey Cricket Schools' Day. Children were given a tour of the world famous stands, took part in cricket-themed games, and met the Surrey Cricket mascot, Caesar the Lion.
🏅 Year 5 Olympiad: On Tuesday, it was Year 5 children's chancce to take part in our brand-new Olympiad event. All children represented a country from around the world by taking part in different sporting activities. The eventual winners were 5M, who were representing Brazil.
🔴🔵🟢🟡 Sports Days: On Wednesday, our Year 3, 4 and 5 children took part in their annual Sports Day, held at the Worcester Park Scout Hut. Events ranged from the classics (egg and spoon and sack races) as well as new favourites (speed bounce and the Under Over race). Massive thanks go to the following people...
Mr Greaves, Miss Mills and Miss Eldridge - for organising and running the event.
Our Cheam Common PTA - for providing well-deserved refreshments for our children to enjoy.
Cheam High and Year 6 Sports Leaders - for helping to run and score each station.
Parents - for their continuous support! A special thanks to those Year 3 parents who took part in the Mums and Dads races.
💷 Fiver Challenge: After weeks of planning, our Year 6 children launched our annual Fiver Challenge Enterprise Afternoon on Thursday. Each group was given £5 to create a business and that they did! Stalls ranged from the ever-popular Soak the Teacher, Beat the Goalie, face painting, nail painting, tattoo parlours, Lucky Dip and many, many more! All profits will go towards our Year 6s Leavers' Party in two weeks' time!
🎵 Choir and Orchestra Performance: On Thursday morning, we welcomed parents and families into school for the Summer Choir and Orchestra Performance. Both families and children from across the school enjoyed performances from our choir, orchestra and individual musicians. Particular highlights were Lucas playing the electric guitar and Sonny playing the keyboard. Tippi's singing solo was also incredible. Well done, all!
If you would like to share your child's achievements outside of school with us, we'd love to hear them! Please complete this short form to tell us all about it!

SEND & Inclusion Updates
Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk
