As part of their ‘Evacuee Day’, Year 3 used Chromebooks to record their own radio broadcasts, alerting families of the need to evacuate London during The Blitz. Next time you’re in school, use the QR codes to listen to what an immersive learning experience this was for the children.
Check out next week's newsletter for a full report on what Year 3 got up to during this day!
Twenty lucky children in Year 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to watch England play Denmark in the International Friendly on Tuesday 31st March. A letter went home this week. If you would like your child to have the chance to attend, please return the reply slip ready for the ballot draw next Friday.
We are delighted to have secured 30 tickets for Year 5 to visit Sky Academy. Children will engage with a hands-on learning experience, creating their own space-themed TV report, with the chance to work with their team of experts & cutting-edge technology. Watch this space!
On Wednesday 26th February, Cheam Common took a team of eight players to take part in a High-Five Netball Festival at Cheam High. The team was made up of five girls and three boys who had to rotate positions in each match which meant that those who usually play attack would have to try defence positions!
In our group, we began with matches against Barrow Hedges and Hackbridge. Each match was 8 minutes long. We were delighted to win both of these matches and definitely started with some strong shooting.
These results meant that we were the winners of our group so went through to play Nonsuch and All Saints' Benhilton who were the winners of their groups. These games were extremely tight with both teams having several chances to score, however neither team taking the lead. Unfortunately, we lost to All Saints Benhilton 1:0 and lost 2:1 to Nonsuch.
Although the team were a little disappointed to not win their final two matches, they played really well and enjoyed their afternoon in very cold and wet conditions. We were delighted to come 3rd overall. Well done to Nonsuch who were presented as the winners.
Before half term, the netball teams played their third match of the Spring term. This match was against All Saints Benhilton.
Match 1 - A team
This was our first away match of the Spring term and although they were excited to play, the team were also a little unsure about playing on a different court in a different school. However we warmed up and discussed what we had learnt from the last two matches. The team started slowly unlike the opposition who were quick and strong on court. The other team scored two goals almost immediately and it was only then that our team woke up and started to play! After a quick, passionate first half we had managed to get back into the game with a score of 4 - 2 to them.
After a quick half time team chat, we went back on with the bit between our teeth. The girls played really well and gave the opposition a really good run for their money but it was too little too late and the game ended 5 - 3 to All Saints! Although the team (and coach) were gutted by the loss we are determined to learn from this and be even stronger in our next match. Well done girls!
Match 2 - B team
This week there were some more new members in the team who were new to netball this term. However they were all keen to give it their best and were excited to play in a match. Again the opposition were quick off the mark and strong on court with an excellent shooter! Although our team was out played, the girls did not give up and improved as the match went on particularly our defence, Lea and Tiffany. These two players in particular gave it their very best and did not give up even though they had a torrid time! The game ended 5 - 0 to All Saints however the team should be very proud of their performance against a very strong B team.
Please make a note that our Summer Fair will be taking place on Saturday 27th June from 11am-2pm.
The fair will take place across both Cheam Common Junior Academy and Cheam Common Infants'.
More details to follow.
We would love as many volunteers to help during the build up to this date as well as help on the day.
Please find below the key dates for Year 7 September 2020 entry process for Wilson's, Wallington, Sutton Grammar, Nonsuch and Greenshaw who work together to conduct a joint Selective Eligibility Test. Transition from Primary to Secondary School can be a challenging time for young people with autism and social communication needs. Preparation is key in the months leading up to this change. Tracy and Melanie from Adapt to Learn are back with a workshop that will give parents hints, strategies and information to ensure they have the tools to make the transition is as smooth and as anxiety free as possible for their young person.
Please note that this workshop will not cover the actual School Transition process ie. applications and EHCP's.
We would like to thank MTV Housing Association who have provided some funding to subsidise this talk for our members.

Children from across the school have been taking part in this year's Living Streets WOW badge competition. Our pupils enjoyed a journey around the globe, designing badges to celebrate some of the breath taking wonders of our beautiful planet. Good luck to all those who have taken part and thank you to our Junior Travel Ambassadors for organising the National competiton for their classes.
Monday 24 February - Sunday 8 March 2020
For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year, like last, we'll be continuing to focus on cocoa and the special role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes. All items with this logo mean they are fairtrade!
So how can we help?
Cheam Common will be hosting a cake sale on Friday 6th March, during breaktime, where you can purchase chocolate rice crispy cakes made from fairtrade chocolate by the Eco Council!
If you love baking then enter into our fairtrade baking competition… Can you bake a fantastic cake, cupcakes or cookies using at least one fairtrade product? All cakes entered into the competition will be for sale alongside the chocolate rice crispy cakes and all entries will receive a certificate for participation. Baking competition deadline is the morning of Friday 6th March. Please ensure each entry has the child name and class.
All profits will be donated to Fairtrade.
We are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2020. World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading.
On World Book Day your child will be taking part in lots of fun activities. Such activities will include: Drop Everything and Read!, Mystery Storyteller, sharing favourite stories with pupils of different ages, as well as fun book quizzes and other book related activities.
On this special day, your child can come to school dressed as their favourite character from any book. The dressing up possibilities are endless: Postman Pat, Oliver Twist, Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, The Gruffalo, Harry Potter etc.
In addition to the above, there will also be a book-themed competition.
This year we are asking the children to create a ‘Book in a Box’, where they can represent any story of their choice… inside a box!
All entries should be handed in to your child’s class teacher by Monday 2nd March with their name and class clearly shown.
Winners will be revealed on Thursday 5th March and will receive a book token.
Here is our attendance round up, with figures for each class since September. Our target for our attendance is 97%.
Well done to 3H, 3B and 4S for their ‘gold’ attendance.
We hope we can get each class to a 'green' level of attendance by Easter.
Please remember that our school gates close at 8:45am. Children who arrive after this time are missing a significant amount of learning time in the classroom as they begin fluency activities from the moment they arrive.
If you would like to discuss any issues with regards to attendance then please see Miss Gunner.

She Wolf by Dan Smith
Washed ashore on a frozen English beach, Ylva, a young Viking girl is swept to shore and faces a race against time to survive. She will not cry. She's meant to be strong. She's a Viking. But when her mother dies, left cruelly orphaned, Ylva becomes set on revenge, tracking the dangerous killer known as the three-fingered man through the hazardous hinterland. As the lone warrior continues her journey, she not only faces the dangers of the treacherous environment engulfing her but the fear of the hungry wolves of the forest circle which draws ever closer.
Ylva not only requires the comforting warmth that comes from the memory of her mother's stories but the favour of the Norse god to stay alive. But when a stranger decides to protect Ylva - seeming to understand her where others cannot - Ylva must decide if her own legend will end in vengeance or forgiveness. Can she shape her own legend? Will it end in revenge - or is there another way?
She Wolf is a powerful tale built around grief, revenge, survival and trust. Harbouring such themes make this a compelling book to read with plenty of emotional twists and turns to keep you hooked, whilst championing Ylva as her fascinating journey draws to a truly satisfying conclusion. If you are a fan of Wolf Brother by Michelle Pavers, then this is the book for you!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

Does your child love Lego?
Join us for a relaxed and unstructured session of Lego building at our Lego club for primary aged children (4-11 years). Lego play is structured, systematic and predictable so is especially appealing to those with autism. It is multi sensory, helps build imagination and improves fine motor skills.
This is a recreational Lego club rather than Lego therapy, although there will be plenty of opportunities for collaborative building and social interaction. Refreshments are available throughout, and a light tea will be provided at the end of the session.
The club is for autistic children of primary school age. Siblings are welcome too as long as they are also of primary school age. Parent/carers must remain on the premises and be responsible for their children at all times. Space is limited and therefore a place must be booked in advance for each child attending, ie including siblings.
If the Club is full up please add your details to the waiting list and we will contact you if we have any cancellations . Very last minute cancellations will be offered on a first come, first served basis through our Members Support Facebook Page.
£3 per child
Places must be booked in advance through this link:
