One in every 100 UK school children is autistic and, without the right support, school can be a confusing and difficult place. During this week, we will try and improve the children's understanding of autism.
To celebrate World Autism Awareness week Cognus' Autism Service has organised some talks on the Cognus YouTube Channel on Monday 29th March including Carley Jones MBE talking about her experiences as an autistic female as well as Smith and Spoon (two young people who previously attended Sutton schools). Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown
Unlike most other children, there is something slightly peculiar and strange about Stanley. You see, Stanley Lambchop was just an ordinary boy, like you and me that is. Until one fateful day, a day Stanley will remember for the rest of his life, for a noticeboard fell on top of him, squashing him completely. Now he's flat as a pancake!
Being flat is fantastic - Stanley can be rolled up, sent in the post and even fly like a kite. But it's not all fun and games . . . there are thieves in town. When the local art museum is robbed, Stanley is used to hide as a painting and alert the authorities if the thieves return. Though it isn’t all fun being so thin, as Stanley soon learns that some people can be cruel about how he now looks.
Can Flat Stanley be a hero? During his many predicaments, Stanley encounters all sorts of trouble that only someone as thin as a piece of paper could solve, and this is where the adventures of Flat Stanley begin!
The magical and brilliantly funny adventures of everyone's favourite flat boy, this collection will be sure to delight both emerging and confident readers alike. A must read indeed!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Experiment Time - Balloon Speakers!
You will need:
Blow up the balloon so that it is filled with air
Hold the balloon up to your ear.
Lightly tap the other side of the balloon with your finger. Can you hear the sound well? Can you feel the vibrations?
Now let go of the balloon. Which way does the air escape? Which direction does the balloon move in?
What to do:
Blow up the balloon so that it is filled with air
Hold the balloon up to your ear.
Lightly tap the other side of the balloon with your finger. Can you hear the sound well? Can you feel the vibrations?
Now let go of the balloon. Which way does the air escape? Which direction does the balloon move in?
How does it work?
When you blow into the balloon you are pushing air molecules into the balloon. They are forced into a small area so are very close together. These circumstances allow the air molecules to carry the sound waves better. That is why you can hear the tapping so easily. It’s as if you built a speaker.
Further Experiments:
Add mini marshmallows to the balloon. Does it muffle the sound? Does it sound the same?
If you have access to a helium tank, fill the balloon up with that instead. Is helium a better conductor of sound then the air that you pushed into the balloon?
Can you hear different pitches based on how big or small the balloon is? Give it a try!
