Cheam Common Junior Academy: Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 8UT

After many years at Cheam Common Junior Academy, it is with a heavy heart that we bid a sad farewell to Madame Horde. Having taught for 19 years, Madame Horde has been a familiar member of staff for all, who has shown great support to both teachers and children alike during her time here. Her passionate and enthusiastic approach to delivering French has been enjoyed by all our children both past and present and is a testament to their love of French. Madame Horde will be greatly missed by both staff and children and we would like to take this opportunity to wish her all the best for the future. Remember to come back and see us. Au Revoir and Good Luck!
On Thursday, 60 children from Year 4 and 5 had the opportunity to attend a workshop with the Cycle Coach. The children took park in a series of games and activities to show and develop their bike handling. Some of the favourites were the slow race and catch the cone. Thank you James and we look forward to welcoming you back to CCJ again soon.
Year 3 began their drumming lessons with Inspire Works this week. This term, Year 3 are learning to play the djembe drums. The children have made a great start and we can’t wait to share some videos of their performances later in the term.
The LEO PE Team set 5 challenges for you to try...
Lots of children from across the school have taken part. They watched the instructions before completing all 5 challenges to the best of their ability.
Let us know how you got on! Share your pictures and videos on Twitter @LEOacademies and @LEOsports7 #ActiveLEO
You can see the challenges here. Good luck!
On Friday 2nd October, the school will be holding our Harvest Festival celebrations. Some of our School Councillors will be helping Mrs Culver lead our celebration assembly as well as organising the distribution of the harvest donations.
Harvest Festival donations should be brought into school between Monday 28th September - Friday 2nd October. Collection boxes will be placed in the school car park and at drop off points so children can contribute their donations when they arrive at school.
Harvest donations will be donated to various food banks by the end of October. These donations will be accessed by those most at need in our community this Autumn. Please could you support the children by sending in a variety of groceries and produce, which have a relatively long shelf-life such as any tinned products, pasta, cereal, tea, sugar etc.
I do hope that we can count on your generosity on this occasion and I am pleased that we have been able to find a very worthwhile charity for the gifts, while at the same time supporting our local community and our School Council.
Ahead of Parliament Week at the start of November, children across the school will be taking part in an online UK Parliament Workshop on Tuesday. The session will cover how UK Parliament works, what MPs do and how laws are made.
On Thursday 1st October, we are celebrating National Poetry Day.
National Poetry Day encourages the enjoyment, discovery and sharing of poetry. This year, National Poetry Day has chosen the theme Vision to allow children to see the world like a poet.
Throughout the day, the children will be taking part in a range of exciting activities to showcase their poetry skills. If they have a favourite poem, it would be lovely for them to bring it to school to share with the rest of their class on this day!
From Thursday 1st October, we are celebrating Black History Month .
We are excited to be celebrating it throughout October and have some exciting activities planned. Each year group will be focusing on a significant individual from Black History, ranging from sports personalities to political figures. They will also share a range of stories, celebrating achievements and important aspects of Black History. We will start with an assembly to help children to understand the purpose of celebrating Black History Month.
We are once again running Bikeability courses for Year 6 this year.
Bikeability works over 2 levels; Level 1 which is playground based and teaches your child to ride a bike correctly and safely. Level 2 is based on quiet roads in the local area and allows your child to experience cycling on roads.
Our Bikeability courses will be running W/C 28th September, 5th October and 12th October during the school day.
If you sign up to one of our courses your child must:
Bring their bike to school on every day of their course with a padlock to lock it in the bike shed
Bring in a helmet as well as a tracksuit and trainers to change into before their sessions
Commit to attend every session
A waterproof coat would also be advised. Children may also want to bring a pair of gloves.
Bikeability courses are designed for children who are confident cyclists and would like to learn how to cycle on the road.

Returning to CCJ once again … the 144 Club is a club but not as we know it! To be part of the club all you have to do it is prove you know your times tables. Children will be given the chance, once a week in their classes, to complete a times tables test. They have to answer 144 questions (72 for Year 3) in less than 5 minutes. If they are successful they enter the 144 Club. They will receive a certificate and a badge. Once in the club, children have to take the test again, every term, to secure their place. The aim is that they beat their own personal best each time. Want to find out more? Speak to your child’s class teacher.

Make sure you come and show Miss Gunner. We have seen some lovely work so far.
The Sutton Schools Admissions Team have provided us with an information sheet containing details about applying for places at secondary schools for next year. Please find this via the link below. They are expecting confirmation of the selective eligibility test dates shortly. Once received they will update their website here so please keep an eye out as this page is under constant review.
Whether you’re new to the school or if you’ve been with us for a while, what better way could there be to meet other parents than to get involved with the fun events that we hold here throughout the year.
Each class has their own ‘Friends Class Rep’. Their role is to help to promote and organise volunteers for our fundraising events throughout the year.
The acronym “PTA” may fill you with fear and you may have images of baking, giving up lots of time and probably even giving lots of money. However, what we need from parents is just a small amount of time, working around you and your commitments. If there were enough of us who were willing to give up 1-3 hours a YEAR, that would make all the difference.
We run various events like cake sales, discos and quiz nights. We always need volunteers at these events, but we would only ask that you give up an hour or two of your time.
This term, we have lots of fun and exciting ideas for ‘virtual’ fund raising events so that even in the current circumstances we can still raise much needed funds for the school. If you would like to find out more or can offer any help, please contact: Friends_CCJA@outlook.com
If you need to contact your child's teacher, remember you can email the year group directly using the following email addresses:

Please click here to view the school dinner menu for after half term. Please let the school office know what days your child would like a school dinner.
Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC) is a successful, popular, unique parenting approach. EPEC is for local parents, led by local parents. We are hoping to train up primary school parents to run their own parenting peer groups in the borough.

A new Public Health England (PH) campaign developed in partnership with leading children and young people’s mental health charities including Young Minds, The Mix, Place2Be and The Anna Freud Centre is available on the Every Mind Matters website (https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/).
It is designed to help parents and carers spot the signs that children may be struggling with their mental health and support them, and also provides advice that can help maintain good mental wellbeing. Click here to read the key messages and top tips from the Campaign.
NHS’s Top 5 Tips for supporting children and young people’s mental wellbeing as they go back out into the world (please view all tips on the Every Mind Matters website)
1. Be there to listen: Ask the children and young people you look after how they are doing regularly so they get used to speaking about their feelings
2. Stay involved in their life: Show interest in their life and the things that are important to them
3. Support positive routines: Be a positive role model and support positive behaviours including regular bedtime routines, healthy eating and getting active
4. Encourage their interests: Being active, creative, learning things and being a part of a team are all good for mental health. Support children and young people to explore their interests
5. Take what they say seriously: help the children and young people you look after feel valued in what they say and help them work through difficult emotions.

INGREDIENTS
600g sweet potatoes, peeled and halved
1 tbsp. oil, plus extra for greasing
4 shallots, peeled and finely sliced
80g ham, cut into thin strips
20g chives, chopped
50g Cheddar cheese, grated
4 large eggs, beaten
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to gas 4, 180ºC, fan 160ºC. Grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square cake tin.
2. Boil the potatoes for 7 minutes. Drain and leave to steam-dry. When cool enough to handle, coarsely grate into a large bowl.
3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan, add the shallots and cook for 5-10 mins until softened. Add to the bowl with the potatoes along with the ham, chives and Cheddar. Season and mix well to combine. Pour in the beaten egg and mix well to coat. Tip into the prepared tin. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden. Allow to cool in the tin, on a wire rack, for 15 minutes. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 rectangles.
Make ahead tip: Allow the cooked slice to cool completely. Wrap in foil (wrap individual rectangles in foil if liked). Chill for 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. If frozen, unwrap and cook from frozen: place the slices, separated, on a baking sheet lined with parchment, cover with foil and cook at gas 4, 180ºC, fan 160ºC for 25 minutes (remove the foil 5 minutes before the end of cooking time).
This term sees the return of our Battle of the Books reading competition. Each year group has an updated list of books recommended for their age group.
Every week we put a synopsis of one of the recommended reads in our newsletter.
This week's book is 'Pugs of the Frozen North' by Philip Reeve and is from the Year 4 book list.
There are pugs. They are in the North Pole. And they are Freezing! The Race to the Top of the World! It comes around once in a lifetime, and the prize? Your heart's desire. Shen and Sika can't resist the chance to win, but competition is fierce. The path to victory is littered with snow trolls, sea monsters, and a gang of particularly hungry yetis. But Shen and Sika have something the other contestants don't have. Actually, they have 66 other things; pugs! That's a 264 paw-powered sled. Let the race begin!
Pugs of the Frozen North is a brilliantly funny and entertaining read, full of hilariously ‘laugh out loud’ moments that will keep both the children and adults entertained. This is the kind of book that can be read aloud to your child, yet it is equally a wonderful read to be enjoyed on your own. Pugs of the Frozen North is a well written adventure set, with a rich vocabulary and truly imaginative drawings, which are so full of detail, that it makes it such a worthwhile experience having a little pause to admire the pictures. A book for the whole family to enjoy!
How many books will you read?
Will you complete the whole list?
Remember once you have read one of the books, you need to write a book eview and show your teacher to get your bookmark stamped.

This week...the egg drop challenge!
You will need;
1 plastic cup of water wide enough to fit the egg
1 25cm piece of cardboard
1 cardboard tube (paper or toilet tube rolls work well)
Egg (uncooked for more drama)
What to do;
Place the flat cardboard over the cup
Place the egg horizontally on the tube
When ready, strike the tray hard enough with your palm to send the tray flying, but not so hard that you hit the glass of water. If all goes well, the tray and paper will go flying, but the egg will safely drop into the water!
How many tries will it take you to complete the egg drop challenge?
Why not ask your child how they used our Word of the Week?
