BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Orphans of the Tide by Struan Murray

The City was built on a sharp mountain that jutted improbably from the sea, and the sea kept trying to claim it back. That grey morning, once the tide had retreated, a whale was found on a rooftop

When a mysterious boy washes in with the tide, the citizens believe he's the Enemy - the god who drowned the world - come again to cause untold chaos. Only Ellie, a fearless young inventor living in a workshop crammed with curiosities, believes he's innocent. But the Enemy can take possession of any human body and the ruthless Inquisition are determined to destroy it forever. To save the boy, Ellie must prove who he really is - even if that means revealing her own dangerous secret . . .

Enthralling, gripping and highly original. For fans of ‘His Dark Materials’, this is the fantasy book for you! Mr Perrott

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

SCIENCE SPOTTED!

Now that the weather is getting warmer, we want you to experiment and see if you can make your own ice-cream at home!

You will need:

Flavoured milk, ice, salt, 2 sealable freezer bags.

What you need to do:

In one bag you need to put flavoured milk, in the other bag you need to fill it halfway with ice and then add a large amount of salt. Make sure the bags are sealed and then roll the ice over the bag containing the milk. Make sure the ice touches the milk as much as possible. When you have been doing this for 5 minutes, open the bag with the milk and see what has happened!

Note: The ice will get very cold so make sure you have a towel to protect your hands!

Send us pictures of you carrying out this experiment! Can you figure out how you were able to make ice-cream without a freezer?
