Learning Together, Aiming High

What's been happening this week...?

Walk to School Week - 17th May - 21st May

This week, children were encouraged to walk to school as many times as possible. This could mean walking from home or parking further away from the school and walking the rest of the way. Children who walked to school each day received a special Walk to School Week badge.

To start the week, children walked to school in trainers and today wore something bright and colourful to be seen out on the roads.

Lots of children have been designing ‘Walk to School Week’ badges, either at home or at school. The ‘design a walk to school week badge’ competition will be judged by our ‘Eco Warriors’ next week and any last entries for the competition should be returned to school by Wednesday 26th May.

Congratulations to all the children who have taken part in Walk to school week. We are proud of how they have embraced the LEO Outcomes of being ‘healthy learners’ and are aware of the health benefits of walking. We also take pride in our students as citizens in our community who attempt to make air quality and pollution better for ourselves and our neighbours through making ‘healthy journeys’.

Outdoor Classroom Day - Thursday 20th May

On Thursday 20th May, we took our learning outdoors as part of Outdoor Classroom Day. As part of raising awareness on current global climate issues (and building back greener) children also came into school wearing green.

Year 5 Dynamos Cricket

Some children in Year 5 took part in the first Dynamos Cricket session this week at Manor Park. This programme will take place every Thursday for the next 6 weeks. The children had lots of fun and we are looking forward to seeing their cricket skills develop.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

This week’s book is Carrie's War by Nina Bawden and is from the Year 6 book list.

It is wartime and Carrie and her little brother Nick have been evacuated from their London home to the Welsh hills. In an unfamiliar place, among strangers, the children feel alone and find little comfort with the family they are billeted with: Mr Evans, a bullying shopkeeper and Auntie Lou, his kind but timid sister.

When Carrie and Nick visit Albert, another evacuee, they are welcomed into Hepzibah Green's warm kitchen. Hepzibah is rumoured to be a witch, but her cooking is delicious, her stories are enthralling and the children cannot keep away. With Albert, Hepzibah and Mister Johnny, they begin to settle into their new surroundings. But before long, their loyalties are tested: will they be persuaded to betray their new friends?

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website here.

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

MAD ABOUT MATHS

Science Spotted

This week... Experiment Time - Turn Milk into Cheese

You will need:

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, pineapple juice, or vinegar

  • pinch of salt

  • saucepan

  • fine mesh strainer

  • 2 small bowls

What to do:

  1. Assemble the ingredients.

  2. Put the milk in the saucepan and cook over medium heat until it’s steamy and foamy, stirring all the time. Don’t let the milk boil.

  3. Remove the milk from the heat and stir in the ⅛ cup lemon juice. The milk should curdle, separating into little lumps (curds) and a thin liquid (whey).

  4. Set the strainer over a bowl or measuring cup. Spoon the curds into the strainer, letting the liquid (whey) collect in the container.

  5. Pour the strained cheese into the other small bowl. Serve with honey or fruit and enjoy!

How does it work?

You may remember hearing about curds and whey from the old nursery rhyme about Little Miss Muffet. Well, this kitchen science experiment will teach you what curds and whey are, and you’ll even make some yourself! Curds and whey are a product of cheesemaking! Milk is made up of proteins, sugars, fat, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. When you add an acid like lemon juice to warm milk, it causes molecules of one of the proteins in milk to bond to one another. That forms a solid lump of protein which is also known as a cheese curd (the leftover liquid is called whey.) You can eat cheese curds on their own (they taste like ricotta cheese) or top with honey or fruit for an awesome treat.

Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane or Mr Iliffe!
