Our LEO Virtual Clubs are now live! To accompany our extra curricular clubs at school, children will be able to access extra curricular clubs from the comfort of their own home, and at a time that suits them. Each club lasts 15-20 minutes which children can access on the LEO YouTube Channel. One video will be released for each club every Monday. Click on the club to access the videos. Every Monday we will share the details to access the clubs for the week. We've got clubs for: Coordination & Reaction Skills, KS2 Athletics, Multi Skills, Football, Wall Games and British Sign Language. You can catch up with this week's clubs here.
Year 4 enjoyed creating their own comic characters to inspire their own writing during their online workshop with cartoonist, Gary Northfield on Wednesday. Thank you to Gary and Reading Zone Live for a great session. We were impressed with their creations.
The London Youth Games have relaunched their virtual games and every Monday will release a new challenge for children to take part in and represent the borough.

As of Monday 19th October, Kingsmead Avenue between Dalmeny Road and Balmoral Road will be closed when school is open, from Monday-Friday, creating a pedestrian and cycle only zone.
Kingsmead Avenue will be closed to external traffic at school drop off and pick up times:
8:15am - 8.45am and 2:45pm - 3.30pm
Residents and businesses of Kingsmead Avenue, blue badge holders, emergency vehicles, council waste vehicles and statutory undertakers are exempt from these restrictions. However, to limit road danger and to maximise space for social distancing, residents and businesses have been asked to try not to drive in the school streets during the times of the restrictions.
Please walk to school if possible or if you do need to drive, make sure you allow extra time to find parking further away from the school entrance.
Volunteers Needed: Volunteers are needed to help everyone get used to the new measures. If you want to help out even if it's just for a morning or afternoon session please contact the School Office.
Thank you in advance for your support to keep our children and community safe.
Next Friday 23rd October, the Friends of Cheam Common have organised a MUFTI Day for pupils. This means that pupils can come into school in their own clothes in return of a suggested £1 donation.

Returning to CCJ once again … the 144 Club is a club but not as we know it! To be part of the club all you have to do it is prove you know your times tables. Children will be given the chance, once a week in their classes, to complete a times tables test. They have to answer 144 questions (72 for Year 3) in less than 5 minutes. If they are successful they enter the 144 Club. They will receive a certificate and a badge. Once in the club, children have to take the test again, every term, to secure their place. The aim is that they beat their own personal best each time. Want to find out more? Speak to your child’s class teacher.

Nessy has launched a brand new Youtube channel - for teachers and parents!
Dyslexia Explained contains short videos to help teachers and parents understand dyslexia and how best to advocate for the children in their lives.
For one of our first videos, we asked Mandy Nayton, CEO of AUSPELD how to talk to children about their dyslexia:
Whether you’re new to the school or if you’ve been with us for a while, what better way could there be to meet other parents than to get involved with the fun events that we hold here throughout the year.
Each class has their own ‘Friends Class Rep’. Their role is to help to promote and organise volunteers for our fundraising events throughout the year.
The acronym “PTA” may fill you with fear and you may have images of baking, giving up lots of time and probably even giving lots of money. However, what we need from parents is just a small amount of time, working around you and your commitments. If there were enough of us who were willing to give up 1-3 hours a YEAR, that would make all the difference.
We run various events like cake sales, discos and quiz nights. We always need volunteers at these events, but we would only ask that you give up an hour or two of your time.
This term, we have lots of fun and exciting ideas for ‘virtual’ fund raising events so that even in the current circumstances we can still raise much needed funds for the school. If you would like to find out more or can offer any help, please contact: Friends_CCJA@outlook.com
If you need to contact your child's teacher, remember you can email the year group directly using the following email addresses:
ccjy3homelearning@leoacademytrust.co.uk
ccjy4homelearning@leoacademytrust.co.uk
Please click here to view the school dinner menu for after half term. Please let the school office know what days your child would like a school dinner.
If you would like to contact Mrs Townsend or Mrs Hart about any matters relating to Inclusion, including Special Educational Needs you can email them directly at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk or alternatively make an appointment through the main school office.
Why not check out our weekly recipes and try them out at home?
INGREDIENTS
50g plain flour
2 egg whites beaten
100g brown bread crumbs
25 g grated parmesan cheese
600g chicken breast fillet
Olive oil
METHOD
Preheat the oven, gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C. Put the flour, egg whites and breadcrumbs on to 3 separate plates.
Mix the Parmesan with the breadcrumbs until well combined. Dip each piece of chicken in the plain flour, then in the egg and then in the breadcrumbs, lightly pressing until the meat is well coated.
Put the breaded chicken fillets on a lightly oiled baking tray. Drizzle or spray over a little olive oil. Bake for 12 -15 minutes until the breadcrumbs are crisp and the chicken is cooked through, with no pink showing when cut open.
Tip: Serve with a fresh tomato salsa. Chop 1 large tomato into small pieces, mix with 1/2 thinly sliced spring onion, a good handful of chopped coriander, 1/2 lime zested and juiced and season to taste, if you like.
This term sees the return of our Battle of the Books reading competition. Each year group has an updated list of books recommended for their age group.
Every week we put a synopsis of one of the recommended reads in our newsletter.
This week's book is 'Rumblestar' by Abi Elpinstone.
Eleven-year-old Casper Tock hates risks, is allergic to adventures and shudders at the thought of unpredictable events. So, it comes as a shock when he accidentally stumbles into Rumblestar, an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts. All Casper wants is to find a way home, but Rumblestar is in trouble. An evil harpy called Morg is sending her followers, the Midnights, into the kingdom to wreak havoc and pave the way for her to steal the Unmapped magic for herself. Casper cannot turn a blind eye and with the help of Utterly Thankless, a girl who hates rules and is allergic to behaving, and her miniature dragon, Arlo, Casper embarks upon an adventure of a lifetime where he must save not only Rumblestar, but his world too!
Strong heroes and daring heroines, nefarious villains and a wonderous landscape that will leave you breathless, Rumblestar is an enchanting, spellbinding book that is perfect for those seeking an adventure of a lifetime!
How many books will you read?
Will you complete the whole list?
Remember once you have read one of the books, you need to write a book eview and show your teacher to get your bookmark stamped.

This week... Hibernation: Fascinating facts!
Animals that hibernate seem to have the right idea: Find a cosy burrow, head indoors, and catch some Zzz’s until spring returns. Or do they?
Here are two fascinating facts about hibernation.
1. When animals hibernate, they aren’t sleeping. When the weather is cold and food is in short supply, animals like hedgehogs, bears and bats become inactive to save energy. During hibernation their heart rates and breathing slow down, and their body temperature drops.
2. To prepare for a long hibernation in which they don’t eat or drink, animals stuff their faces. Dormice, for example, eat so much that by the end of summer, they can be double their normal size. Just as well, because they can lose up to half their body weight during hibernation.
Can you find at least five more hibernation facts??
Over to you! Can you create a poster about your favourite animal that hibernates.
Why not ask your child how they used our Word of the Week?
Year 3:
dreadful
Year 4:
hideous
Year 5:
wretched
Year 6:
loathsome
