At Cheam Common Junior, children have enjoyed taking part in our annual LEO Big Art's Week, where they have had the opportunity to express their creativity in a variety of fun and exciting activities. In Year 4, children have been fortunate to paint and produce several large whole class murals, courtesy of local resident artist, Doug Shaw, who came into the school to launch this exciting project. Developing their artistic skills, children painted an environment piece based on animals found within a river. We cannot wait to hang these pieces within the school and celebrate their incredible effort.
Across the school, children also had the opportunity to show their creativity and artistic skills in all areas of their learning this week. In maths, children constructed an array of intricate polygon patterns courtesy of the 'curves of pursuit' method. The results are simply breathtaking. In Year 3, musical instruments were made using various recyclable objects with impromptu performances taking place both in and outside the classroom. Within our English lessons, children throughout the school explored the work of Sutton-based author, Mikey O'Crikey, where they practised writing their own imaginative poems. Well done to all our children for their outstanding work and to all our teachers for putting on a truly creative week for all.
Inspired by their current LGFL Picoh Pilot project, Year 5 have been working with our Mr Perrott, Director of English, and Mrs Shirley, Director of Computing and Digital Skills, as part of an exciting project to develop both their writing and their ability to code through the use of a Picoh robot: an interactive tool that can be programmed to speak and act just like a human.
In groups, children learnt how to sequence their robots to program a dialogue between two Picoh robots, as well as to ask and answer a series of questions, communicating using a range of non-verbal cues. From this, children then drafted a series of informative texts, using Adobe Sparks. Throughout the morning, children had fun using technology to enhance their learning. Fascinating and truly amazing work, Year 5! Why not ask them what Picoh can do & which tasks it could do for you?
Early this week, our very proud and very excited Year 4 boys’ football team sprung into action, at the LEO Academies Football Festival competing against other schools within the LEO Academy Trust. Children played together beautifully, showing remarkable resilience, teamwork on the pitch, encouraging one another and being incredible sportsmen throughout.
Great performances from everybody that participated during the event, with Cheam Common Junior reaching the Semi Final stage. Well done to Brookfield Primary for winning the festival and a huge congratulations to all our boys for a truly outstanding performance. You did us proud! We would also like to thank our sports team for organising a super event. Amazing and well done all!
This half term within our Year 5 & 6 Burnet News Club, two of our members have been recognised for their outstanding contributions during each lesson. Beating hundreds of children from across the United Kingdom (and even globally too), Sanvi (6C) and Aashi (6K) were awarded the 'Outstanding Contribution Award' for all their wonderful inspiring and thought-provoking contributions to the Burnet News Club forums. Well done girls!
Next year, our award winning Burnet News Club will continue for Year 5 & 6. Should you wish for your child to take part and join this exciting after school club, then either speak to your child's teacher or to Mr Perrott, who will continue to lead the club each week.
Letters from Lockdown by Natasha Kaplinski
Exploring the question ‘what was lockdown like for you?’ this moving collection of over a hundred letters from front-line workers, home-heroes and famous faces from Joe Wicks to Tim Peake reflect on the funny, sad, heroic and unexpected experiences brought about by the pandemic. The idea for the book came from Natasha Kaplinsky's children, Arlo and Kika,c who wrote an open letter, wanting to understand other people's experiences of lockdown. Their question, 'What was lockdown like for you?'provides a mixture of funny, sad, heart-warming, surprising, heroic and honest experiences will mark the start of a period of reflection. Other letters document the unforgettable lighter moments of the past year: interviews crashed by children, TikTok triumphs and disasters, and Goats joining Zoom meetings. Each offers their unique perspective on the year everything changed. 'Letters from Lockdown' is a wonderful book to treasure and read and is perfect to share and discuss your very own experiences !

This week's book is 'Wonder' by R.J Palacio.
I know I’m not an ordinary kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice-cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an Xbox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at wherever they go.
You will need:
8 ounce screw-top plastic container or mason jar
1/2 cup of whipping cream
1/4 teaspoon of salt (optional)
Spoon
What to do:
Pour whipping cream into a screw-top plastic container. (make sure not to fill more than halfway)
Add Salt.
Make sure you screw the top on tight.
Shake for 7-9 minutes or until the cream stops sloshing around and you are left with a yellow blob.
Shake for a few seconds longer.
Congratulations! You have pure butter. Now you can serve it whenever you like!
How does it work?
As you churn whipped cream, you beat droplets of butterfat until they collapse and rejoin to form a single blob of butter. This is an example of emulsion, where one liquid hangs suspended in another.
If you add a squeaky-clean silver coin in with the cream, is it easier to tell when the butter is done?
What if you only shake for 4 minutes? What does the substance seem to turn into?
Could you add flavoring? Vanilla extract? Chocolate syrup? Honey? Cinnamon Sugar?
Learn about how temperature affects the state of matter (solids, liquids and gases). Try cooling the butter, try heating the butter. Can you make it change states of matter by adding or taking away heat?
