Letters of Joy - Sutton Age UK

We need your help to help bring smiles to older people of Sutton by sending them a lovely picture, letter or poem. Age UK Sutton is supporting hundreds of older people during coronavirus, many of whom have nobody else, or are desperately missing regular contact with friends, neighbours, and family. These letters will be sent to older people isolating at home, in care homes, and in hospital to bring some cheer in these difficult times. Thank you to everyone who has sent a letter so far. Here are some that we have seen this week.

You can email your letters to your year group mailboxes or send your letter directly to:

The Locals: Diaries - Distance Learning Project with Sutton Cultural Services

LEO Academy Trust have been asked to take part in an exciting project from Sutton Cultural Services called ‘The Locals: Diaries’. We are incredibly honoured to have been asked and hope that lots of you will want to get involved.

Sutton Council Archives are collecting diary entries from different types of people throughout the borough during this unusual time. They are going to add your entries to Sutton’s Archive Collection so that historians of the future can learn what this time was like for people in our community.

Entries can be as short or as long as you like. You can write about one single day, a week or keep a diary over a few weeks. Your diary can include photographs, drawings or even poetry. It can be handwritten or digital. You could even make a video diary (If other people are in the video, make sure that you have their permission). BE CREATIVE!

Click here for a template you could use.

Anyone can take part in the project but in order for the diaries to be entered into the Sutton Council Archives, we will need parental permission.

Once the diary entry is completed, please email to: diaryentryproject@leoacademytrust.co.uk.

Please include your child’s name, school, class and age.

Then please complete this form to give permission.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Summer of the Dragons by Ed Clarke

'That's not a bird,' Mari said, disbelievingly. 'That's another dragon . . .'

A year after she discovered a tiny dragon on the beach, life is getting back to normal for Mari Jones and Gweeb, when two unexpected events turn it upside down again. First comes the news that Mari's mum Rhian is expecting a baby, meaning that her boyfriend Gareth and Mari's best friend Dylan will be moving in with them on the farm. Even more incredibly, Gweeb's family have returned to lay their eggs in the same cave where Mari first found her secret dragon. With tourists flocking to the beach for the summer, Mari has her work cut out to keep the dragons hidden and safe, especially when disgraced scientist Dr Griff Griffiths turns up on the hunt for a story. And when Griff manages to find and steal Gweeb's precious egg, Mari must stage a daring rescue mission before it's too late . . .

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

SCIENCE SPOTTED!

With the recent lovely weather, you may have noticed lots of beautiful flowers blossoming in your gardens or on your daily walks.

This week you could try to use some of those flowers to make your own perfume!

We do not want you to take petals off of these beautiful flowers, but anything that you can find that has naturally fallen off the plants would be great for you to use.

All you will need is a glass, the flowers you have gathered, and a little bit of water.

Simply put the flowers/petals in the glass, squash them down to release their oils, add a small amount of water and then leave for a few minutes to see the results!

Be as creative as you like! Experiment with putting different variations of flowers together to make the best smelling perfumes. We would love to know which combinations smelt the best and also worst!
