CHEAM COMMON HISTORY WEBSITE LAUNCHED

Today we launched our Cheam Common History Website. Children from our History Club have been discovering lots of facts about the school's history over the past 6 months and have been collating this information ready to share. We hope you enjoy exploring the website and finding out as many things as they did.

On the website you will find photos from each decade and extracts from the school's log book from over 100 years ago. Our History Club have also met former teachers and children who used to come to our school. We hope you enjoy our interviews with them.

Well done to all of the children for their hard work on this project which predominantly has been led by them. Thank you to Mr Hedger and Mrs Horwood for helping the children put this project together.

SPACE COMES TO LIFE FOR YEAR 5

By 5W

On Thursday 6th February, the whole of Year 5 went to the Wonderdome which was set up in the assembly hall. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we got there as it was an enormous, metallic-silver coloured, spherical dome. We felt excited and we were eager and desperate to go inside and explore the mysterious space. When we were allowed in, It felt like we were inside a spaceship flying through the universe. Steve, who presented the facts told us all about life on board the International Space Station (ISS). We did some stargazing and we were amazed by the billions upon billions of constellations in the sky. Who would have thought there were so many? During our time inside the fascinating Wonderdome, we learned incredible facts about the sun such as how hot it is - 15 million degrees celsius! We then explored the planets from Mercury right through to Neptune. We learned that Pluto is now a dwarf planet and it was reclassified in 2006! We also learned that Uranus was going to be called George at one point in time. It also made us appreciate how important it is to live on planet Earth because there are lots of massive storms and gargantuan volcanoes on the other planets that would make it difficult to survive. We found it interesting to learn about the Galilean moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto) and we learned that they gave us evidence that we follow a Heliocentric model not Geocentric model - we learned that in our Science lesson. We had a wonderful time in the Wonderdome and it made us want to visit space ourselves (maybe one day!).

“We felt like we were in space!” (Brooke)

“When I stepped inside I felt like I was in a spaceship and I was counting down 5,4,3,2,1.. Blastoff!” (Joshua H)

“This inspired us to go into space ourselves.” (Evie)

YEAR 5 METRO BANK VISIT

By Sadie, 5J

For the last 4 weeks, Metro Bank have been coming into school to teach us about savings and how banks work, but this Monday, Year 5 had the opportunity to go to their local Metro Bank in Sutton to see what they do there. We got the 151 into Sutton. We were very excited. We were split into groups. One half of the class went to Miri and the other side went with Tushy. We first explored the volt and saw the drawerss that had people's precious belongings in them. Then, we played a game where we got into groups of 4 or 5 and got a number then we had to find the number that was hidden in the bundle of numbers on the trays. After that, we looked at the card machine. This amazing machine could print cards with money on them in less than 5 minutes. At the end of the day, we got our exciting goodie gift bags. Inside, we got a neon green slap band, a booklet about metro bank, two metro bank pens and two delicious lollipops. Before we left, as a class we said the famous 'Metro Bank chant’. ‘Who are we and what's our colour?’ It was a fun trip and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you to Metro Bank for teaching us lots about financial literacy this term.

Hi-Five Netball Tournament

On Friday 7th February, Cheam Common took a team of nine players to take part in a High-Five Netball Tournament at Sutton High. The team was made up of seven girls and two boys who had to rotate positions in each match which meant that those who usually play attack would have to try defence positions!

In our league, we had to play five different teams: Cheam Fields, Cheam Park Farm, Sutton High, The Avenue and Holy Trinity, each match was 6 minutes long. By the end of these five matches we had won four and drawn one so ended up as league winners! The children had all tried a number of different positions and our shooting was, as always, excellent.

This result meant that we had to play another league’s winning team, which was Nonsuch Primary. This game was extremely tight with both teams having several chances to score, however after six minutes the score was 1 - 1! This meant that the teams had to continue playing, the winner being decided by golden goal! Although we had several chances to score, Nonsuch scored and won the game. This school actually went on to win the whole event.

Our final game was against Manor Park for third and fourth place. Unfortunately the rotation meant that we had a lot of players out of position and our experienced shooters off court. The team on court battled well against Manor Park and the game could have gone either way, however ended with a score of 2-1 to Manor Park!

Although the team was a little disappointed, they played really well and Cheam Common were the toughest opponents that the winning school came up against. Well done to all the children who played for showing real determination and a have a go spirit! Well done to Nonsuch for winning the event.

Chelsea Foundation Tournament 2020

After the teams' recent success qualifying for the EFL Kids Cup to represent AFC Wimbledon, this time we were competing to represent Chelsea at the Premier League Primary Stars Competition. The tournament took place at the brand new Walton Excel Stadium with teams from the Boroughs of Sutton, Kingston and Elmbridge participating.

We were seeded in group 4 with 2 other teams. The Danway School from Leatherhead and Manor Park from Sutton. We had to play 4 group games (both teams twice) with the winner from each group competing in a semi final. Our group games results were as follows:

4-0 Win Vs Manor Park (Bolu 2, Jake, Benji)

1-0 Win Vs Danway (Jake)

3-0 Win Vs Manor Park (Bolu, Jake, Zac)

2-1 Vs Danway (Bolu 2)

We won our group comfortably which resulted in us playing in a Semi Final against the winners from group 3, Boxgrove. A very tight affair was separated by a Bolu strike to see us win 1-0 and progress us through to the final.

The final was against tournament favourites St Michael's who had similar results to us in the group fixtures and had won every game leading to the final. They had some very good players and players who we knew played for professional academies so we expected a tough game. We found ourselves 1-0 down after a minute. This seemed to spur us to start passing the ball quickly and getting tighter to the St Michael's players. After a few really good chances St Michael's countered 3v2 and were clinical to make it 2-0. Almost immediately we went forward and was awarded a lifeline when Jake was brought down in the penalty box. He dusted himself down and dispatched the penalty emphatically to make the score 2-1. With a minute remaining we threw everything at St Micheal's but their Goalkeeper and defence remained resilient and we lost the final 2-1.

Despite not winning the tournament, it was another fantastic achievement from our Year 6 team to make it all the way to another final with 15 other schools competing. Attention now turns back to domestic action with some really important games upcoming and the Crystal Palace Foundation tournament on Thursday 13th. Well done boys!

Year 5 & 6 Badminton Festival

On Thursday afternoon, 9 children from our Year 5 & 6 Badminton club went over to Nonsuch High School for Girls to represent Cheam Common.

They started off with a 10 station skills circuit, where they had different activities being led by the sports leaders from Nonsuch High School. Each station was a different game/session that worked on their teamwork skills and also allowed them to work on their technique and game play. For the last half hour they went into friendly matches against lots of other children from other schools from across the borough.

It was a great experience for all children, learning new skills and having fun! Well done to the team!

Pentathlon

By: Lucas M

On Thursday 30th January, a group of pupils from Year 4, 5 & 6 went to Sutton Sports' Centre to take part in a Pentathlon competition. A pentathlon is a variety of different sports such as racing, curling, bowling and much more. We were split into two teams, Year 6 and Year 4/5 and had to compete against other schools in Sutton, scoring points in the different activities. Both teams did extremely well, using different skills and worked together to represent Cheam Common Junior Academy. Our Year 6 team came 4th out of their group and our Year 4/5 team came first in their group. This means that hopefully our Year 4/5 team will go on to represent Sutton at the Copperbox at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. We all had an amazing day and were delighted to add a trophy to our cabinet for 2020!

Year 5 Visit to Buddhist Temple

By Aroush and Prenavi

On Friday 7th February, Year 5 visited the Buddhist temple in Wimbledon where we learnt lots of interesting facts and information about the Buddhist Temple and Buddhists.

As soon as we woke up, we felt anxious and excited. We were wondering what would happen on this adventurous expedition of ours? All sorts of thoughts bombarded our minds: would we see monks and nuns? How would we get there? What time would we be leaving school?

On our way to school, we saw all our friends near the gates, chatting about what they thought was going to happen and how exhilarated we all were! We were actually going to visit a real Bhuddhist Temple!

We were all very eager for our trip to the house of worship (we couldn't wait for our departure)! Eventually, Miss Austin announced our groups and hurriedly we got into our pairs - hoping to find out that our friends were our partner. Everyone was in their gear, with our comfy shoes, fastened, secured and tightened, with packed lunches dangling from our hands, we were prepared to go ! Finally, we started to embark on our mission to the bus station, which was our first step to the Buddhist Temple ...

Climbing onto the bus, a surge of adrenaline shot through us -it was our first trip of the year- we were SO delighted! Scrambling on to the double decker bus, we clambered onto the top part of the bus and our view was picturesque. Whilst we remained on the bus, we played lots of games with our classmates: noughts and crosses, double o 7, hangman, drawing, riddles….but most of the time we were chatting.

At last, we were off the bus and inside the gates of the Buddist Temple. We were actually at a real Buddhist Temple for the first time (for most of us) ! Looking around we saw a magnificent, majestic monument with mythical creatures guarding the place of worship! Then we went inside the holy place, and we all gasped. In awe. Astonished. Astounded. We sat down. You could not describe it’s alluring, appealing and awesome sculptures and architecture,-not mentioning the fascinating, mind-blowing and tremendous colours embedded in the paintings. The friendly man told us more about the story of the Siddharta Gautuma, and how he had to sit under a tree and meditate to understand the true meaning in life (that is what created the power of Buddhism in his soul). Then we asked him numerous questions such as: how did they make the Buddha monuments? Why was he treated like a prince before he became a Buddha ? Why did they have legendary animals outside the temple ? Thankfully, the man had cleared all our questions and now we all know how to become a Buddhist !

Disappointedly, we had to leave this fascinating place, but we hadn’t finished our journey just yet: we still had to go back on the public, four wheeler and travel back to school (just before we went home).

After our extensive tour of the house of devotion, we were overtaken and even worse, paralysed by fatigue. Before dusk took over the day, we collapsed on our parents and reminisced about all the intriguing facts and beliefs of the Buddhists!

WOW BADGE COMPETITION

Children from across the school have been taking part in this year's Living Streets WOW badge competition. Our pupils enjoyed a journey around the globe, designing badges to celebrate some of the breath taking wonders of our beautiful planet. Good luck to all those who have taken part and thank you to our Junior Travel Ambassadors for organising the National competiton for their classes.

What is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Monday 24 February - Sunday 8 March 2020

For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year, like last, we'll be continuing to focus on cocoa and the special role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes. All items with this logo mean they are fairtrade!

So how can we help?

Cheam Common will be hosting a cake sale on Friday 6th March, during breaktime, where you can purchase chocolate rice crispy cakes made from fairtrade chocolate by the Eco Council!

If you love baking then enter into our fairtrade baking competition… Can you bake a fantastic cake, cupcakes or cookies using at least one fairtrade product? All cakes entered into the competition will be for sale alongside the chocolate rice crispy cakes and all entries will receive a certificate for participation. Baking competition deadline is the morning of Friday 6th March. Please ensure each entry has the child name and class.

All profits will be donated to Fairtrade.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2020

We are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2020. World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading.

On World Book Day your child will be taking part in lots of fun activities. Such activities will include: Drop Everything and Read!, Mystery Storyteller, sharing favourite stories with pupils of different ages, as well as fun book quizzes and other book related activities.

Dressing up:

On this special day, your child can come to school dressed as their favourite character from any book. The dressing up possibilities are endless: Postman Pat, Oliver Twist, Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, The Gruffalo, Harry Potter etc.

'Book in a Box' Competition

In addition to the above, there will also be a book-themed competition.

This year we are asking the children to create a ‘Book in a Box’, where they can represent any story of their choice… inside a box!

See the photographs below for some ideas.

All entries should be handed in to your child’s class teacher by Monday 2nd March with their name and class clearly shown.

Winners will be revealed on Thursday 5th March and will receive a book token.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Here is our attendance round up, with figures for each class since September. Our target for our attendance is 97%.

Well done to 3H, 3B and 4S for their ‘gold’ attendance.

We hope we can get each class to a 'green' level of attendance for next week.

As the winter weather continues, lots of children may develop colds and coughs. Wherever possible, please send your child to school. Most often, once the school day is underway, children perk up. If they are too unwell to be at school, a member of the school office would contact home.

Please remember that our school gates close at 8:45am. Children who arrive after this time are missing a significant amount of learning time in the classroom as they begin fluency activities from the moment they arrive.

If you would like to discuss any issues with regards to attendance then please see Miss Gunner.

KITCHEN SCIENCE!

We are pleased to inform you Mrs O'Brien-Skerry, a scientist and Cheam Fields' parent governor, will be delivering a practical and informative session on engaging children with SEND with science.

The session will focus on how you can help your child engage in science while having plenty of fun using household ingredients!

She will also be discussing the opportunities available for children with SEND at a range of London Museums.

The session will be held at Cheam Fields Primary Academy on Wednesday 26th of February at 5:30pm.

Please click here to sign up and inform us how many parents we need to cater for.

We look forward to seeing you there!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown

Unlike most other children, there is something slightly peculiar and strange about Stanley. You see, Stanley Lambchop was just an ordinary boy, like you and me that is. Until one fateful day, a day Stanley will remember for the rest of his life, for a noticeboard fell on top of him, squashing him completely. Now he's flat as a pancake!

Being flat is fantastic - Stanley can be rolled up, sent in the post and even fly like a kite. But it's not all fun and games . . . there are thieves in town. When the local art museum is robbed, Stanley is used to hide as a painting and alert the authorities if the thieves return. Though it isn’t all fun being so thin, as Stanley soon learns that some people can be cruel about how he now looks.

Can Flat Stanley be a hero? During his many predicaments, Stanley encounters all sorts of trouble that only someone as thin as a piece of paper could solve, and this is where the adventures of Flat Stanley begin!

The magical and brilliantly funny adventures of everyone's favourite flat boy, this collection will be sure to delight both emerging and confident readers alike. A must read indeed!

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
