What's been happening this week...?

Tes Schools Awards 2021 Shortlist

We were delighted to find out this morning that Cheam Common have been shortlisted for a Tes Schools Award. We're incredibly proud to have been shortlisted in the best use of technology category. This is wonderful recognition of the incredible work that teachers across the school and LEO have been developing to enhance teaching and learning. The awards will take place on Friday 25th June. Well done to all of the staff involved and to the children for embracing technology into their learning.

Eid Mubarak!

We hope our Muslim community enjoyed celebrating Eid!

LGFL Picoh Pilot

Year 5 are really excited to be taking part in the LGFL Picoh Pilot this term. The children have began to program their Picohs using Scratch. With motorised heads, expressive eyes and the ability to speak, our Picohs have been a hit. We can't wait to see what the children learn next and will keep you updated with their progress.

Cycling Coach Jersey Competition

We have had some excellent entries so far. There is still time to submit yours! Will one of our pupils win a new bike?

Year 6 have been exploring the migration of different animal classes across the globe. They looked into the reasons for migration, distance travelled and their migration routes. Why not ask them what they discovered?

Our CCJ Art Club have been designing a new logo. Which is your favourite?

Well done to Elise in 4J for creating an impressive model of an Ancient Mayan city. Elise used photos from a book her Nan had as a souvenir from a holiday as inspiration. Excellent job Elise!

Information & Dates

Walk to School Week - 17th May - 21st May

For this week, children are encouraged to walk to school as many times as possible. This could mean walking from home or parking further away from the school and walking the rest of the way. Any child who walks to school everyday receives a badge.

To start the week, we would like all children to walk to school in trainers on Monday 17th May. To end the week, the children are able to come to school in bright MUFTI to be seen out on the roads.

Watch out for a special assembly and our extra special badge competition to run alongside Walk to School Week!

Outdoor Classroom Day - Thursday 20th May

On Thursday 20th May, we will be taking part in Outdoor Classroom Day and taking some of our lessons outside. As part of raising awareness on current global climate issues (and building back greener) all children are invited to come to school wearing green on this day.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week.

Click here for some resources and ideas of things you can do at home and here for some competition ideas.

The Cycle Coach - Design a Cycling Jersey Colouring Competition

All you have to do is design, colour and create your own Cycling Jersey to be in with the chance to win a Frog bike!

Jersey designs can be entered the following ways:

- Photographed and sent via email to: competition@the-cyclecoach.com

- Uploaded to Twitter and tag @the_cyclecoach

- Handed in person to Mr Ewing at the school office

You can access the template here.

The lucky pupil that wins the competition can select any size and colour Frog bike they wish!

The best design from each school will be shortlisted with the winning Jersey announced on Wednesday 26th May.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental health awareness week takes place from the 10th May to the 16th May. The theme for this year's week is 'nature'. Recent National Trust research found a link between feeling connected to nature and having improved wellbeing.

Here is a health and wellbeing booklet helping children reconnect with the natural environment through 14 outdoor activities and games. Enjoy!

Parking on Kingsmead Avenue

Please can we kindly remind our parents to be considerate when dropping off your children and collecting them at the end of the day. Please park further away from school and walk to the school gates. Please do not obstruct resident's driveways. We want to ensure our roads are safe for our children and the community.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

This week’s book is Toto and the Wizard of Oz by Michael Morpurgo

Told through the eyes of Toto, Dorothy’s loving and faithful dog, their world is turned upside down when a twister comes crashing down on their farm house in Kansas. Coming down with a crash in the mysterious land of Oz, the pair meet a series of extraordinary characters: a scarecrow who believes he has no brains, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who may not be as cowardly as he thinks he is. Desperate to return home - after all, home is home, and home is best- they set off with their new friends on a journey down the yellow brick road to find the only person who might be able to help them: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But what they find might surprise them.

A wonderfully charming reimagining of a children’s classic, this beautifully written tale will enchant both new and old fans alike. With plenty of twists to keep you entertained, Toto is a wonderful addition to Michael Morpurgo’s collection!

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website here.

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

MAD ABOUT MATHS

Science Spotted

This week... The Leak Proof Bag!

You will need:

  • A medium sized sandwich bag

  • A few sharp pencils

  • A jug of water

What to do:

  1. Make sure your pencils are very sharp and pointy!

  2. Fill the bag halfway with water and then seal it closed.

  3. Here comes the scary part! Hold the pencil in one hand and the top of the bag in the other hand. Believe it or not, you can push the pencil right through one side of the bag and halfway out the other side without spilling a drop. The long chains of molecules that make up the bag magically seal back around the pencil and prevent water from leaking out. Sound impossible? Try it—over the sink the first time! Be careful not to push the pencils all the way through the holes or your science magic trick will quickly turn into a “clean-it-up” activity.

  4. When you are finished, hold the bag over the sink or a bucket and remove the pencils. Toss the bag in the recycling bin and dry the pencils.

How does it work?

The zipper-lock plastic bag you used was most likely made out of a polymer called low-density polyethylene (LDPE). It’s one of the most widely used packaging materials in the world. LDPE is low in cost, lightweight, durable, a barrier to moisture, and very flexible.

Think of the polyethylene molecules as long strands of freshly cooked spaghetti. The tip of the sharpened pencil can easily slip between and push apart the flexible strands of spaghetti, but the strands’ flexible property helps to form a temporary seal against the edge of the pencil.

Would the experiment work with a blunt pencil? What would happen?

Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane or Mr Iliffe!
