LEARNING AT CHEAM COMMON

Year 4 have been learning about tenths and hundredths this week and have used resources to support their understanding. Moving place value counters between columns was a vital visual to support understanding! Excellent learning Year 4!

Digital Leaders from Cheam Common enjoyed sharing how they have helped to lead our KS2 1:1 Chromebook Programme, as part of our Trust Peer Review. What an amazing impact some of our youngest leaders are having across the Trust. Well done!

Year 5 have been enjoying their music lessons with Ms Greene this week and enjoyed sharing their rhythms with our visitors.

PROJECT BASED HOME LEARNING

This week, we have launched our optional home learning grids. These are also available on the school website. Each year group have set a range of tasks that children may like to complete. These tasks will immerse children with the topic they are learning about and will also support their learning. There is no expectation to complete all of them or to complete one each week. The children can choose which tasks they would like to do. Please show your work to Miss Gunner!

Here is some of the great homework that the children have brought in as part of their home learning. We will continue to share these each week. Well done all!

DONATIONS TO SUPPORT ST RAPHAEL'S HOSPICE PATIENTS THIS EASTER!

St Raphael’s Hospice is looking for individuals, local companies and businesses to give back this Easter!

St Raphael’s Hospice care for people with terminal illnesses in Merton and Sutton. They need £6 million a year to run, relying heavily on public donations and fundraising as only 24% is received from the NHS.

Every year they make Easter hampers that they ask the local community to raffle to raise funds. Hospice mascot Lenny needs help to fill as many hampers as possible with Easter Eggs of all shapes and sizes.

Cheam Common would love to be able to support this great cause. If you and your families can help by donating an egg or box of chocolates for the hampers, you can drop them into any of the 10 St Raphael’s charity shops, hand them in to reception at the Hospice in London Road or alternatively, Mrs Young will collect them from the school office on Monday 16th March.

The hampers will be raffled through local businesses and community groups. All proceeds will ensure that St Raphael’s can continue providing expert end of life care every day. Lenny hopes to have enough eggs to make 40 hampers and also give every patient and their family a visit from the Easter bunny on Easter Sunday.

Are You Getting Your Daily Dose of Nature?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51653850

Researchers from the National Trust and the University of Derby did a survey that found:

-70% of children say they rarely or never watch clouds, butterflies and bees.

-People who regularly connect with nature are more likely to tackle the crisis facing wildlife.

-Being connected with nature - noticing natural phenomenon everyday - is linked to higher well being.

The National Trust has launched a new campaign to boost people’s connection with nature, which includes a new week by week guide to help people improve their relationship with the natural world and take action to help halt wildlife declines.

CHEAM COMMON SUPPORT FAIRTRADE

Monday 24 February - Sunday 8 March 2020

For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year, like last, we'll be continuing to focus on cocoa and the special role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes. All items with this logo mean they are Fairtrade!

To mark the end of Fairtrade Fortnight, last week we hosted our own cake sale at break time selling cakes made by our Eco Council and the fantastic cakes made at home by the children and their families. All of the cakes were made from Fairtrade products. Thank you to everyone for supporting Fairtrade.

We raised over £250. A fantastic effort!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Orion Lost by Alastair Chisholm

Lost in space. Alone. Stranded. Left floating through the galaxy of stars, prepare for an adventure where the only mission is to survival, whatever the cost! Orion Lost is the brand-new science fiction story that will thrust you deep into the darkest depths of outer space and on a voyage of perseverance, determination and courage.

Thirteen-year-old Beth and her friends are aboard the Orion as it blasts off from Terra Ventura (Earth to you and me) and heads off to explore the vast solar system before them. Within the dark, outer atmosphere of outer space, the transport ship Orion is four months out from Earth, when catastrophe strikes. Knocked from its course, the ship and everyone on board has been left stranded in deep space. Suddenly it's up to Beth to navigate through treacherous and uncharted territory to reach safety. But a heavily-damaged ship, space pirates, a mysterious alien species, and an artificial intelligence that Beth doesn't know if she can trust means that getting home has never been so difficult.

Hugely gripping, with incredible twists and a fast-paced, action-packed story, this is an unputdownable science fiction adventure - perfect for fans of the recent Star Wars trilogy!

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
