To kick start the return to school, children have been excited to take part in British Science Week, a ten day celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics running from 5th - 14th March. Across the school, teachers have planned a series of engaging and purposeful learning activities designed not only to immerse children within the world of science, but to also help develop their ability to collaborate, work successfully as a team and to use their creativity and imagination to solve a variety of problems.
Within Year 3, children investigated the strength of a structure by exploring a variety of geometrical designs as well as designing and building floating devices to test buoyancy when a series of weights were added. In Year 4, light and shadows were explored by the children with their own puppet show. They also explored how varying weights could cause objects to float or sink. During Year 5’s week of experiments, children were excited to launch rockets in the playground as they learnt about forces. Whilst in Year 6, paper aeroplanes were constructed as children learnt about aerodynamics, forces and resistance.
All in all, children have had a wonderful introduction to the world of science and have been enjoyed across the school. We would like to congratulate all our children for their hard work and effort, as well as thanking Miss Lane (Year 3) and Mr Iliffe (Year 5) for organising such a fun, action-packed and creative week. Remember, British Science Week continues into next week where your child can continue to explore the world of science at home through a series of choice board activities. Why not share the wonderful learning that takes place via your child’s year group email or alternatively via Twitter @CCJacademy.
Our Year 5 Science Quiz Team had a great morning taking part in this year’s online area heats. Well done to Vasu, Elo, Marty & Sanat. They did incredibly well with some extremely challenging questions!
Congratulations to our Year 6 Quiz Team on winning yesterday's online area heat, in the Quiz Club UK Science Championships. They will go on to represent Cheam Common in this year’s national final. What an amazing achievement! Well done Alex K, Alex W, George and Joshua.
On Thursday 04th March 2021, children from across Cheam Common Junior, both at home and in school, came together to celebrate World Book Day: an annual event held across the country to celebrate and champion the love of reading. From Willy Wonka’s ‘Golden Ticket’, Harry Potter and members of Hogwarts Academy, various Mr Men characters to even Doctor Who and his famous Tardis, children used their imagination to come dressed in a variety of famous children’s book characters, bringing the magic of storytelling to life. Such fantastical costumes made the day even more special, as children took part in a host of wonderfully creative activities including book related quizzes, live virtual author and illustrator webinars (including David Walliams himself), drawing and designing their own characters and book covers and retelling their favourite stories to share online. For those at home, the magic of World Book Day did not stop there as they were able to share their work with their classmates virtually, ensuring that everybody was included. This year, as part of our chosen theme, ‘Celebration: Diversity’, children were able to explore a variety of books that championed diversity, inclusivity and equality. From Malala’s Magic Pencil, Hidden Figures to Dracula Spectacular, children were able to immerse themselves in a range of books and share their responses in various ways from drawing and designing their own comic strips to writing their own inspirational poems!
From everybody here at Cheam Common Junior, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful children and adults who helped make this day a truly memorable experience for all!

Please can we kindly remind our parents to be considerate when dropping off your children and collecting them at the end of the day. Please park further away from school and walk to the school gates. Please do not obstruct resident's driveways. We want to ensure our roads are safe for our children and the community.
Our very own Cheam Common Strava Page is up and running to help track how active we are whether that is through walking, cycling and running. Check out the leaderboard so far...
This year Red Nose Day is on Friday 19th March and the School Council would like to raise some money for this great cause as well as the children having lots of fun!
Firstly, we will be selling red noses in school for £1.50 (the price set by the charity) from Monday 15th March. These will be sold at the office from Monday and the children will be able to buy them using cash. We are asking that the children take the red noses home, these are not to be worn in school until Friday 19th March. If children buy red noses at Sainsburys, these also need to stay at home until Friday 19th.
Secondly, on Friday 19th March the children will be able to come into school in mufti wearing anything red and if they want, a red nose. We are asking for a donation of £1 for this which will be collected at the gate as the children come into school.
We hope that the children enjoy the day as well as raise some money for Comic Relief. Thank you for your continued support, we are all looking forward to seeing everyone back in school.
It's LEO Innovation Week!
This week will be an opportunity for pupils to put their thinking caps on to solve problems.

Grow your own sunflower
Sunflower Competition!
Spring officially starts on Saturday March 20th and to celebrate the new season, we are launching a sunflower competition. How high will your sunflower grow? Submit your pictures and measurements of your sunflowers by Friday 25th June.
Plastic cup
Compost
Garden sunflower seeds
Large flower pot
A watering-can or hose
It'll take about eight weeks to grow a sunflower from seed and here's how:
Put some compost in a plastic cup, almost to the top. Poke your finger in the soil to make a hole for your sunflower seed.
Pop a sunflower seed into the hole then cover it with a little compost. Give it water so it's nice and damp.
Put the cup somewhere sunny like a windowsill. Give your sunflower a little water whenever it feels dry.
You should see your plant poke through the soil after about 1 or 2 weeks. Now's the time to start measuring how much it grows each week - make a log of its progress.
When your plant grows too big for the cup, plant it in a bigger flowerpot or outside if you have somewhere warm and sunny.
Watch it grow - how high will it go? Here's where the competition starts if you're challenging your friends and family. Good luck!
When the sunflower head starts to turn brown, cut it off and hang it somewhere dry and airy. When the seeds are dry, rub them together to loosen them. Birds can eat your seeds if you leave them in the garden. You could even put them in a bird feeder.
