Cheam Common Weekly Newsletter
Friday 11th September 2020
Cheam Common Junior Academy: Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 8UT
Tel: 020 8337 1844
We are so pleased to have everyone back at school and would like to say a warm welcome to all the new children who have recently joined us in Year 3 and across the school. We are really looking forward to an exciting year of achievements and new experiences. We want every child to reach their potential and we look forward to working in partnership with you. Don't forget to visit our school website if you would like to find out more information. Click here to view it.
The last couple of months have been challenging for all of us and it has been great to have everybody back in school. We have created a bespoke Recovery Curriculum to support the children to settle back in. This means that for the first half term the whole school will be working on a topic called Heroes. The curriculum is founded on research and has been carefully designed to help children rebuild their relationships, recover from their time away from school and re-establish their trust in learning and education. In addition to catching up on learning that they have missed through explicit and targeted teaching, children will have the opportunity to learn about the history, geography and nature of their local area. They will also have the opportunity to express their feelings about the period of lock down and recognise how members of the community have supported each other.
Finally, thank you for your patience and support as we adjust to the new dropping off and collection arrangements.
Please remember the following:
Please arrive at your allocated time for collection. Arriving too early creates congestion.
Please remember to keep your distance on the path into school and when waiting to collect your children.
Please ensure children and siblings stay with you at all times and do not play or climb in the playground.
What has happened this week?
LEO International Day of Literacy
On Tuesday 8th September, it was International Day of Literacy.
Since 1967, International Literacy Day celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million adults worldwide lacking basic literacy skills today. 1 in 8 disadvantaged children in the UK do not own a single book, which will affect them in later life.
International Literacy Day 2020 focused on Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, with a focus on the role of educators and changing teaching practices. This means that this year the day is more relevant than ever to teachers and the challenges of teaching literacy that COVID-19 has brought, and future-proof approaches to teaching that might be adopted. Mr Perrott shared a virtual assembly with the children.
What is happening next week?
INDIVIDUAL / SIBLING SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Our school photographer will be in school on Friday 18th September to take individual and sibling portrait photos. Each class will be called for ther photographs throughout the day and siblings both at CCJ will also have their photos taken together. Remember to come to school with the correct uniform!
EXTRA CURRICULAR CLUBS
A reminder that you will be able to book onto our extra curricular clubs on Monday from 7:30am via Arbor. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis. If you are unsuccessful on gaining a place in a club, then please email the school office who will be able to add you to the waiting lists. Clubs begin week commencing 21st September.
You can view the club list here.
LEO Freedom Week (including International Democracy Day)
On the 15th September it is the International Day of Democracy and on the 21st September is Peace One Day.
The International Day of Democracy celebrates inclusion, equal treatment and participation in society. Democracy allows people to elect representatives to serve them in government to ensure that their views are heard and their rights are upheld. This day allows people to strive towards Freedom all over the world and ensure that everyone has rights. Click here to find out more about the International Day of Democracy. At LEO, we believe it is very important for everyone’s voice to be heard, which is why we have pupil parliaments. This week you will be able to run for a variety of positions of responsibility and represent the pupils of the school, so we would like to take this opportunity to learn more about Democracy, Human Rights and Children’s Rights.
Since Peace One Day was established, countries that are in conflict have agreed to engage in Peace for one day, to allow people to help those in need, with medical care, vaccinations and to have freedom for the day. Throughout the years, millions of people have been active on Peace Day in every country of the world, and hundreds of organisations have carried out life-saving activities in areas of conflict. Click here to find out more about Peace One Day.

144 Club
Returning to CCJ once again … the 144 Club is a club but not as we know it! To be part of the club all you have to do it is prove you know your times tables. Children will be given the chance, once a week in their classes, to complete a times tables test. They have to answer 144 questions (72 for Year 3) in less than 5 minutes. If they are successful they enter the 144 Club. They will receive a certificate and a badge. Once in the club, children have to take the test again, every term, to secure their place. The aim is that they beat their own personal best each time. Want to find out more? Speak to your child’s class teacher.
Congratulations to the following children who are already members of the 144 Club for this term:

Information and Resources
GOODBYE MISS ABRAM
At the end of the summer holidays, we said goodbye to Miss Abram as she moves on to a new job. Miss Abram has worked at Cheam Common for the past six years and has been an invaluable member of our school office and will be missed by staff, children and families. We wish her all the best in her new role.
THANK YOU MR SWEETLAND
David Sweetland who has been our lollipop man for a number of years has retired. We would like to thank him for all his work and for always greeting everyone with a smile on his face and ensuring our community are safe. We wish you a restful retirement. Please can we remind families to cross carefully especially as more traffic is travelling through Worcester Park.
HELP & ADVICE FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
If you would like to contact Mrs Townsend or Mrs Hart about any matters relating to Inclusion, including Special Educational Needs you can email them directly at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk or alternatively make an appointment through the main school office.
RIGHTS' RESPECTING GOLDEN TICKETS
Today we relaunched our golden tickets. Staff will reward children with ‘golden tickets’ when they display excellent behaviour, manners or show they are demonstrating the Rights Respecting Values. These tickets go into a raffle draw and a winner is selected each week. At the end of each term, these children will be awarded a special treat.
SCHOOL UNIFORM - THANK YOU!
Many thanks to all parents for their support in making sure that all of our children are coming to school wearing the correct uniform. All of the staff are very grateful for your support – it makes a huge difference when the children arrive at school smartly dressed and ready to learn. If you do need to refer to our Uniform Policy at any time throughout the year, you can find it on our website.
Many thanks once again for your support.
BREAKTIME FRUIT
Please remember that all children are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.
We have a number of children in school who are highly allergic to nuts and nut products. To ensure the safety of all of our pupils, please can we ask parents not to send their children to school with nuts as part of their packed lunch. Thank you for your support.
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
This term sees the return of our Battle of the Books reading competition. Each year group has an updated list of books recommended for their age group. This week every child will be receiving a Battle of the Books bookmark and the list of books for their year group in their classroom libraries. In order to enter the battle, children need to read a book from the list and when they have done this they need to complete a book review to go into their class book corner. When their teacher has seen their review they will stamp off the first box on their bookmark. Each term we will be sharing with parents and children which classes and individuals have read the most books. This initiative is completely optional but is a nice way to encourage children to read and to broaden the selection of books and authors they know.
The children were re-introduced to this in assembly today and are very excited to get reading! They have copies of each book in their year groups to borrow. Please can you encourage your child to return these when they have finished reading them. Each week in the newsletter we will continue to share a book from one of the year groups showing you a short synopsis and some questions to consider. Keep an eye out for these to see if your child has already read it or whether it will be a book they will be keen to read! If there are any books on the list that your child has already read then they just need to complete a book review from their classroom book corners and they can get their first stamps!
How many books will you read?
Will you complete the whole list?

CHEAM COMMON READING RAFFLE RETURNS
Can you read at home 5 times a week?
To encourage children to read at home as much as possible we have a Reading Raffle every Friday. When your child reads at home, please record what they have read in their home school diaries. Please add details about the book, which was their favourite part or any tricky parts. Children who read at least 5 times throughout the week will be entered into the Reading Raffle draw. Teachers will check children’s diaries on a Friday morning and those children who have read 5 times or more will be entered. A name will be picked out of the draw each week in celebration assembly. The winner will be able to select a brand new book as their prize from a large selection.
