On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed teachers from across the country to Downing Street to thank them for the extraordinary work they have done keeping children learning during the pandemic, and getting them safely back into schools. We were delighted to hear before half term that Cheam Common had been invited to send two representatives to this event on behalf of all of those who work in schools across the country to provide amazing support to children, families & their community during the pandemic. It was a very special evening for Mrs Shirley and Mrs Hart.
Before half term, 30 children from Year 5 and 6 joined other schools from LEO Academy Trust to take part in a week of online learning from True Education Partnership (TEP) to discover China's rich and exciting culture. Their virtual visit to Chengdu followed an action packed itinerary. Read on to find a report from TEP to see what they got up to.
After much anticipation, our UK students were welcomed by our Chinese hosts to embark on their ‘five-thousand mile’ virtual trip to Chengdu.
Equipped with their resource packs, worksheets, and authentic materials, students enjoyed putting their findings to practice during an afternoon of traditional Chinese craft sessions. Each student learned how to sketch, paint and print Chinese architecture using traditional techniques and produced beautiful rubber paintings.
Students were left feeling inspired after a virtual visit to the Sanxingdui Museum in Chengdu. Discovering the ‘Divine Tree’, ‘Standing Bronze Figure’, Gold Sceptre’, ‘Jade Zhang’ and ‘Stone Tiger’, were some of the many highlights that influenced the children to create their own projects.
The students were amazed by China’s many cultural customs and traditions and were excited to have a go for themselves. Each child worked with our Chinese teachers to master the art of Chinese calligraphy – an important part of the country’s artistic heritage.
Throughout the week the children learned about China and Chengdu’s exciting history and in particular the famous 3 Kingdoms Period.
To demonstrate their knowledge of Chinese culture, the pupils designed their very own Chinese dragons, made Bronze masks and Chinese knots and lanterns, and even tasted some traditional cuisine. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning about the famous Chengdu local street food and what makes it so unique.
A definite highlight of the week was the live interaction with 100 students in China. Our British students were fascinated by the size and scale of the Chinese schools as they tuned into their very own virtual tour of the school. They learned about the many differences between going to school in China and asked lots of questions.
Students in the UK were made to feel very welcome with special performances from their Chinese peers dedicated to their arrival.
During the ‘live’ sessions, our UK and Chinese students introduced themselves to one another as they got to know their favourite hobbies, aspirations, and daily life.
What better way to learn about China’s famous giant panda than a visit to Chengdu’s Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding! The children were amazed to see the giant pandas up-close and enjoyed learning about the species and its habitat.
Following an exciting morning, the students were busy making origami giant pandas – a technique that originated in medieval China.
Chinese Kong Fu is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. The students listened to its historic influences and were taught the traditional techniques by our native hosts. Very quickly, the students had mastered the form of martial arts and showed off the moves they had learnt.
What a fantastic opportunity for the children. Thank you to True Education Partnerships, LEO Academy Trust for organising and Cheam Fields' Primary for hosting.
This week, we have launched our new unit of learning for the Summer Term: London's Calling.
Children in each year group are working on particular areas such as Landmarks, Inventions, Art & Fashion. We look forward to updating you with their learning.
Tuesday was World Ocean Day and our children enjoyed taking part in lessons & activities to promote the protection & restoration of our oceans. They discussed topics such as plastic pollution, climate change & how to ensure a brighter future for us all.
As part of World Ocean Day, Year 6 have been researching the Indian Ocean. Take a look at these excellent fact files they created using AdobeSpark.

The 14-Day Challenge is a nationwide competition which all children can join.
From Monday 14th June until Sunday 27th June, we are encouraging every pupil to work in the green zone (achieve their target number of stars) in one or more of the Doodle programmes.
After the 27th June, we'll count up the percentage of students in each class who were in the green zone during this time. The class with the highest % of pupils in this zone will win a bundle of educational games!
Please can we kindly remind our parents to be considerate when dropping off your children and collecting them at the end of the day. Please park further away from school and walk to the school gates. Please do not obstruct resident's driveways. We want to ensure our roads are safe for our children and the community.

Marcus Rashford MBE is famous worldwide for his skills both on and off the pitch – but before he was a Manchester United and England footballer, and long before he started his inspiring campaign to end child food poverty, he was just an average kid from Wythenshawe, South Manchester. Now the nation's favourite footballer wants to show YOU how to achieve your dreams, in this positive and inspiring guide for life.
A 1 litre plastic bottle or a water bottle
Ketchup pack/ sachet from a fast food restaurant
Salt
Remove any labels from the bottle and fill it all the way to the top with water.
Add a ketchup pack to the bottle.
If the ketchup floats, you’re all set – go to step 4. If the ketchup sinks in the bottle, go to step 5.
For the floating ketchup pack simply screw the cap on the bottle and squeeze the sides of the bottle hard. If the ketchup sinks when you squeeze it, and floats when you release it, congratulations, you’re ready to show it off. If it does not sink when you squeeze it, try a different kind of ketchup pack or try a mustard or soy sauce pack.
If the ketchup pack sinks, add about 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of salt to the bottle. Cap it and shake it up until the salt dissolves. (Kosher salt will keep the water from getting too cloudy, although it will usually clear up over time if using regular table salt.)
Continue adding salt, a few tablespoons at a time until the ketchup is just barely floating to the top of the bottle.
Once it is consistently floating, make sure the bottle is filled to the top with water, and then cap it tightly.
Now squeeze the bottle. The magic ketchup should sink when you squeeze the bottle and float up when you release it. With some practice you can get it to stop in the middle of the bottle.
This experiment is all about buoyancy and density. Buoyancy describes whether objects float or sink. This usually describes how things float in liquids, but it can also describe how things float or sink in and various gasses.
