This half term, children have been exploring the issues surrounding climate change and how, as a community, we can ‘Build Back Greener’. This week, Burnet News Club member, Sanvi (Year 6) has written a wonderful open letter to the government, outlining what we could do to make positive changes and reduce plastic pollution. Her response has been highlighted as outstanding and featured on the front page of their website. Well done Sanvi! Why not have a read below!
To the Government,
As the world has been distracted by the current pandemic, Covid-19, we have forgotten completely about climate change, which for many future generations is a bigger threat and problem than any of us could ever imagine. It is now time to wake up! There are lots of ways to improve and end climate change but in this letter, I have listed the major few.
Firstly, we should ban all single-use plastic. Every day, we use single-use plastics but we could easily replace these with either paper or cloth. We use plastic straws everyday but we could replace them with paper or bamboo. There are many other products like this that we use every day. We shouldn't use plastic too much as it takes ages to decay on the earth’s surface, especially when there are possible substitutes.
Secondly, we should spend more money researching replacements for plastic. Plastic is a huge cause for global warming and climate change so to end climate change we have to stop using plastic. However, there are lots and lots of items that have undiscovered substitutes. We have to find more substitutes if we want to ban plastic once and for all!
Thirdly, we should stop deforestation. Why do we cut down trees? To make buildings? Furniture? Paper? Fire? Buildings and furniture can be made out of bricks, cement and other materials. Paper can be recycled and reused. Fire can be ignited by flint, stones and lots of other items. So why trees? If we can't stop using trees entirely, we should at least plant saplings and new trees to replace old ones. Or maybe only cut down dead trees. Trees are vital for the ecosystem, helping climate change and, ultimately, to survive.
Lastly, we should use solar energy and wind energy. This is both efficient and unharmful to the environment. For example, if we use petroleum or diesel cars, we add to the carbon footprints, polluting air and increasing global warming. This is why we should use electrical, hydro-powered or solar-powered cars.
In conclusion, we should try our best to end climate change and we should each do our part.
Yours sincerely,
wondrous_orca
Our final total raised from our 100 sponsored event was an impressive £825. Thank you all for your generous sponsorships to support the children and fundraise for such an incredible cause.
Class Photos will be taking place on Friday 14th May. Please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform on this day including their school jumper or cardigan. Any PE kit needed for this day should be brought in separately.
For this week, children are encouraged to walk to school as many times as possible. This could mean walking from home or parking further away from the school and walking the rest of the way. Any child who walks to school everyday receives a badge.
To start the week, we would like all children to walk to school in trainers on Monday 17th May. To end the week, the children are able to come to school in bright MUFTI to be seen out on the roads.
Watch out for a special assembly and our extra special badge competition to run alongside Walk to School Week!
On Thursday 20th May, we will be taking part in Outdoor Classroom Day and taking some of our lessons outside. As part of raising awareness on current global climate issues (and building back greener) all children are invited to come to school wearing green on this day.
All you have to do is design, colour and create your own Cycling Jersey to be in with the chance to win a Frog bike!
Jersey designs can be entered the following ways:
- Photographed and sent via email to: competition@the-cyclecoach.com
- Uploaded to Twitter and tag @the_cyclecoach
- Handed in person to Mr Ewing at the school office
You can access the template here.
The lucky pupil that wins the competition can select any size and colour Frog bike they wish!
The best design from each school will be shortlisted with the winning Jersey announced on Wednesday 26th May.
Mental health awareness week takes place from the 10th May to the 16th May. The theme for this year's week is 'nature'. Recent National Trust research found a link between feeling connected to nature and having improved wellbeing.
Here is a health and wellbeing booklet helping children reconnect with the natural environment through 14 outdoor activities and games. Enjoy!

This week’s book is The Infinite by Patience Agbabi
Leaplings, children born on the 29th of February, are very rare. Rarer still are Leaplings with The Gift - the ability to leap through time. Elle Bibi-Imbele Ifie has The Gift, but she's never used it. Until now. On her twelfth birthday, Elle and her best friend Big Ben travel to the Time Squad Centre in 2048. Elle has received a mysterious warning from the future. Other Leaplings are disappearing in time - and not everyone at the centre can be trusted. Soon Elle's adventure becomes more than a race through time. It's a race against time. She must fight to save the world as she knows it - before it ceases to exist...
Brilliantly fresh, funny and original, this delightful and energetic adventure is a smart and well-written adventure. Full of lovable characters that are unlike any you would have read before, The Infinite is a breath of fresh air to read!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website here.
Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
One small (sandwich size) zip-lock bag – freezer bags work best.
Baking soda
Warm water
Vinegar
Measuring cup
A tissue
Go outside – or at least do this in the kitchen sink!
Put 1/4 cup of pretty warm water into the bag.
Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the water in the bag.
Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda into the middle of the tissue
Wrap the baking soda up in the tissue by folding the tissue around it.
You will have to work fast now – partially zip the bag closed but leave enough space to add the baking soda packet. Put the tissue with the baking soda into the bag and quickly zip the bag completely closed.
Put the bag in the sink or down on the ground (outside) and step back. The bag will start to expand, and expand, and if all goes well…POP!
What happens inside the bag is actually pretty interesting – the baking soda and the vinegar eventually mix (the tissue buys you some time to zip the bag shut) When they do mix, you create an ACID-BASE reaction and the two chemicals work together to create a gas, (carbon dioxide – the stuff we breathe out) well it turns out gasses need a lot of room and the carbon dioxide starts to fill the bag, and keeps filling the bag until the bag can no longer hold it any more and, POP! Be sure to clean up well and recycle those plastic bags…have fun!
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane or Mr Iliffe!
Younger children will love helping to make these easy pizzas for lunch.
INGREDIENTS
6 crumpets
4 tbsp. Passata
4 tbsp. ketchup ½
tsp dried oregano
toppings of your choice (peppers, cherry tomatoes, red onion, sweetcorn, olives, ham and basil all work well)
75g grated cheese
METHOD
Heat the grill to high.
Lightly toast the crumpets in a toaster or under the grill.
Meanwhile, mix the passata, ketchup and oregano together in a bowl. Season.
Chop your chosen toppings into small pieces – young children can tear basil, or chop soft veg in a cup using safety scissors.
Line a baking tray with foil.
Spread the sauce over the crumpets, then top with the veg and cheese. Arrange on the tray and grill for 3-4 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
Leave to cool slightly before eating.
