BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
This week's book is 'Rumblestar' by Abi Elpinstone.
Eleven-year-old Casper Tock hates risks, is allergic to adventures and shudders at the thought of unpredictable events. So, it comes as a shock when he accidentally stumbles into Rumblestar, an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts. All Casper wants is to find a way home, but Rumblestar is in trouble. An evil harpy called Morg is sending her followers, the Midnights, into the kingdom to wreak havoc and pave the way for her to steal the Unmapped magic for herself. Casper cannot turn a blind eye and with the help of Utterly Thankless, a girl who hates rules and is allergic to behaving, and her miniature dragon, Arlo, Casper embarks upon an adventure of a lifetime where he must save not only Rumblestar, but his world too!
Strong heroes and daring heroines, nefarious villains and a wonderous landscape that will leave you breathless, Rumblestar is an enchanting, spellbinding book that is perfect for those seeking an adventure of a lifetime!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
MAD ABOUT MATHS
Well done to Vasu for working out last week's Mad about Maths Challenge.
Science Spotted
Experiment time- Water fireworks!
You will need
Water
Oil
Food Coloring (Any color of your choosing)
16 oz clear glass
Another 16 oz clear glass
A Fork
What to do
Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room-temperature water.
Pour 2 tablespoons of oil into the other glass.
Add 2 drops of food coloring to the glass with the oil.
Stir the oil into the food coloring using a fork. Stop once you break the food coloring into smaller drops.
Pour the oil and coloring mixture into the tall glass.
Now watch! The food coloring will slowly sink in the glass, with each droplet expanding outwards as it falls. Looks like fireworks! Right?
How does it work?
Food coloring dissolves in water, but not in oil. So when you pour in your food coloring/oil mixture the oil will float at the top of the water because it is less dense, and the food coloring will begin to dissolve once they sink through the oil and into the water.
Further experiments
Try using red and blue as your food coloring, and do one drop of blue and one drop of red when you start to mix the oil and food coloring together.
Try doing it without the oil and observe and record how the results are different.
Try using a larger glass, does it change the results?
Why not ask your child how they used our Word of the Week?
