DoodleMaths Summer Challenge

1st July – 31st August

Doodle little and often to earn rewards!

We can’t wait to see you all taking part in the DoodleMaths Summer Challenge. Why not sign up today?

The goal of the Challenge is to earn 600 stars (for children born after 31/08/13) or 750 stars and a 14-day streak. This target has been carefully chosen to provide children with a challenging and rewarding experience, while also being achievable in 10 minutes a day – leaving plenty of time to enjoy the summer!

By rewarding children for Doodling ‘little and often’, the Challenge encourages children to develop healthy learning habits which can be used outside of DoodleMaths in their education as a whole.

Upon completion of the Challenge, children will receive an exclusive collectable pin badge and certificate free of charge to celebrate their hard work in the post. Good luck!

LEO Arts' Week

Week Commencing 6th July

Arts Week is the perfect way to express yourself and how you have been feeling! The definition of Art is: the product of imagination and creativity, particularly in a physical form. This means that there are many different forms of art: paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, collage, photography, theatre, poetry, novels, music, dance, film and much more.

We are going to focus on five strands of Art this week: imagery (such as paintings and photography), music, film and theatre, books and dance. At the start of the week, we will share all of the activities and links so that you can pick and choose which activities you would like to take part in and see which competitions you would like to enter.

LEO Celebration Week

Week Commencing 13th July

For our Celebration themed week, we will be reflecting on the year and celebrating all that we have achieved. We will also be looking ahead to the next academic year and thinking about what we’d all like to achieve.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Toto and the Wizard of Oz by Michael Morpurgo

Told through the eyes of Toto, Dorothy’s loving and faithful dog, their world is turned upside down when a twister comes crashing down on their farm house in Kansas. Coming down with a crash in the mysterious land of Oz, the pair meet a series of extraordinary characters: a scarecrow who believes he has no brains, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who may not be as cowardly as he thinks he is. Desperate to return home - after all, home is home, and home is best- they set off with their new friends on a journey down the yellow brick road to find the only person who might be able to help them: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But what they find might surprise them.

A wonderfully charming reimagining of a children’s classic, this beautifully written tale will enchant both new and old fans alike. With plenty of twists to keep you entertained, Toto is a wonderful addition to Michael Morpurgo’s collection!

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

SCIENCE SPOTTED!

This week you are going to be making your own edible science fossil!

You will need the following things: cupcake case, raisins, hard boiled sweets.

You will have seen many different fossils in your science lessons but now is the time to really freak people out and actually eat one!

Your first step is to think about which bug you want to try and create. Then arrange some raisins in the cupcake case to look like your chosen bug. Once you have done that place a boiled sweet over the top - it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t cover the whole of the base!

You will then need adult help to put these in the oven until the sweets have fully melted. This will take about 10-15 minutes.

Once your fossils have cooled you can have a taste and watch the horrified looks on peoples faces as they think you’re eating real bugs! Make sure you send in some photos!
