We are very pleased that our teaching staff is extremely stable for next year, however, as always at this time of year, some members of our teaching staff will be leaving us at the end of this term.
We are very sad to say farewell to Miss Carberry as she embarks on a full time masters degree. We wish her all the best and thank her for her creativity and enthusiasm over the past two years. We very much hope Miss Carberry will return to a LEO school in the future.
We also say farewell to Miss Bullen who is relocating to Somerset. Miss Bullen has been a great asset to Cheam Common over the past 3 years. We wish her all the best in her new home and school.
Lastly, Miss Brooks is leaving us to further her studies at university to become a fully qualified teacher. She will be thoroughly missed by all year groups and we thank her for her commitment to the school across all year groups. She has facilitated a number of extra curricular opportunities for our children and will be missed. We know she will be a great asset to the teaching profession and hope to see her return in the future.
Miss Lane will move to working across both Cheam Common Infants’ and Junior sites to teach in Year 2 and to support transition and interventions at KS2.
We are delighted to welcome back Miss Briggs, our Vice Principal, from Maternity leave. Miss Briggs will be working alongside Mrs Lester, Mr Perrott and Mrs Townsend to ensure the smooth running of the day to day life of the school.
NEW TEACHING STAFF FOR SEPTEMBER 2021
In September we will be adding to the staff we currently have at Cheam Common Junior Academy. We will be joined by several new class teachers: Miss Shallcross, Mrs Madia and Miss Fox. Mr Francis who is experienced in leading our Breakfast and After School Club for a number of years will be moving into a classroom based role to develop his teaching practice and support classes with their learning. We wish them all a very happy time with us at Cheam Common and are certain they will enjoy developing their careers, with both ourselves and the LEO Academy Trust.
CLASSES FOR SEPTEMBER 2021
On Wednesday 7th July the children will be meeting their new class teacher for next year. They will get the opportunity to spend some time in their classroom for September taking part in an activity with their teacher and class.
You can find more details for next academic year here.
Well done to our Year 6 quiz team on an excellent performance in the National Finals of the Science Quiz Championships. Battling in the top 10 for most of the rounds, they eventually ended up finishing 10th in the country. What an amazing achievement! Well done George, Aurora, Alex K and Alex W.
Maths has been all around at Cheam Common this week as we have celebrated London Maths Week. Why not ask the children what they have been doing?
Year 5 and 6 had great fun celebrating their achievements during a busy year at the Burnet News Club. Thank you to Economist Foundation and to Mr Perrott for giving the children the opportunity to hold weekly discussions on the world's most pressing questions. A special well done to Saanvi and Aashi on being highly commended at yesterday's ceremony. We are very proud of you! Our Burnet News Club were extremely excited to hear they had been announced as the Burnet News Club Outstanding School Award 2021 and topped off with Mr Perrott being announced as the winner of the Burnet News Club Teacher of the Year award.
It was great to see our football team back in action last week as they took part in the LEO tournament held at Cheam Park Farm. After some great matches and a close penalty shoot out, the boys were crowned as the overall winners. Well done to you all!

On Friday, 20 children visited Whitehall in Cheam Village to take part in ‘Kids in Museums’ Digital Takeover Day. They explored the house and completed a wildlife trail as well as took part in a workshop to explore how the Biodiversity of the area has changed since the house was built in Tudor times and the reasons for this change. They then moved onto creating some wildlife habitats in Whitehall’s garden.
They helped to write social media posts telling people what they have been learning and doing as part of the national 'Kids in Museums Digital Takeover Day'. You can find out more here: https://kidsinmuseums.org.uk/what-we-do/teen-digital-takeover/
Our Year 6 Head and Deputy boys and girls went to Cheam Common Infants this week to answer all of the questions they have about joining Cheam Common Junior Academy. This week's book is 'Mega Monster' by David Walliams.
On a volcanic island, in the middle of shark-infested waters, stands The Cruel School. The lessons are appalling, the school dinners are revolting and the teachers are terrifying – especially the mysterious Science teacher Doctor Doktur.
When Larker is sent to the school, she quickly realises something very odd is going on… something involving Doctor Doktur, a pair of strange spectacles, and a ‘Monsterfication Machine’. And ultimately she finds herself face to face with a real life Megamonster.
There seems to be no escape – but for Larker, nothing is impossible…
You will need:
One egg
Water
Salt (1 – 2 cups)
A tall drinking glass
A spoon
What to do:
1. Pour water into the glass until it is about half full.
2. Place an egg in the glass of water and see if it sinks or floats (it should sink).
2. Stir in lots of salt. Start with 1 tablespoon and stir it until the salt dissolves. Keep adding more salt until the egg floats.
3. Next, carefully pour more fresh water until the glass is nearly full (be careful to not disturb or mix the salty water with the plain water). If you’re very careful, you can get the egg to float between the fresh and saltwater!
How does it work?
The egg is denser than the fresh water (more molecules per square inch), this causes it to sink. When you start dissolving salt in the water, this is increasing the density (adding more molecules per square inch). Eventually the water becomes denser than the egg causing the egg to float. When you carefully add fresh water again, this fresh water is less dense than the salt water so it floats right on top!
Are there other liquids you can add to make the egg sink or float?
What else can you dissolve in the water to make the egg float?
