As Friday 24th April was the start of Ramadan, Cheam Common Juniors held their first online RE day on the religion Islam.
To understand Ramadan, Year 3 read an exciting text explaining what Ramadan is. Did you know that Ramadan lasts for 30 days and is a time for reflection for Muslims? Year 3 then explored Islamic art, including patterns and designs, before creating some of their own.
Year 4 learnt about Eid Al Adha and the 5 Pillars of Islam, in particular prayer, in Reading and Topic. After reading a text about the Festival of Sacrifice, Year 4 practiced their comprehension skills before choosing a craft to resemble the story. Some children recorded themselves baking sheep biscuits on Flipgrid or made sheep figures out of Lego! The creativity was flowing all the way through to their Topic lessons where they designed their own prayer mats when learning about the 5 Pillars of Islam! Well done Year 4!
Also being creative, Year 5 created lanterns and prayer mats in order to celebrate Ramdan too. Did you know that lanterns represent hope to light the way through darkness! They also decorated a window using tessellation. Year 5 also had the opportunity to bake some yummy treats to symbolise Eid Al Fir which will be on the evening of 23rd May!
Inspired by the Islamic symbol, Year 6 created their own moon and star sculptures! Year 6 also celebrated Ramadan by making lanterns, using geometric patterns that they learnt earlier in the year and decorating Sadaqah jars.
Below are each year group's Project Based Home Learning for this term.
The topics for the Summer Term are:
Year 3: Ancient Greeks
Year 4: Blue Abyss
Year 5: Ancient Egypt
Year 6: Ancient Mayans
These are also available on our website here. Each year group have set a range of tasks that children may like to complete. These tasks will immerse children with the topic they are learning about and will also support their learning. There is no expectation to complete all of them or to complete one each week. The children can choose which tasks they would like to do. Please send any work into your Year Group email addresses. Your class teachers and Miss Gunner would love to see your work!

It is important children have time to reflect and talk about any concerns they have. Jigsaw have shared a story a second story and calm time for children to access. Toto the Ninja Cat by Dermot O’Leary
Meet Toto: an extraordinary cat, who can't wait to have an adventure with you! Toto the cat and her brother Silver live footloose and fancy-free in a townhouse in London. Toto is almost totally blind, and learned to trust her senses from a ninja cat-master who taught her back in Italy where they were born. By day, Toto and Silver seem to be ordinary cats, but by night, they love to have adventures! One evening, news reaches Toto that a king cobra has escaped from London Zoo! Together with help from a very posh cat and two hungry tigers, Toto and Silver must investigate. Can they find the giant snake, before it's too late
Purrfect for together, the story features brilliant black and white illustrations throughout. With gentle themes of friendship, inclusivity and winning in the face of adversity, this is a hilarious must-read for all the family! Mr Perrott
