Year 1 trip to Hampton Court
Last Friday, as part of their history learning, Year 1 went on a trip to Hampton Court. They were very excited to board a double Decker bus which had 'Cheam Common Infants - Hampton Court' on it. In the sunshine they loved exploring the palace, gardens and had a wonderful time in the magic garden. As well as using this to find out more about palaces of the past, they will compare it to Nonsuch Park. They also used it as inspiration for some writing. Thank you to all the parent helpers.
Maths Week
This year the London Maths Week/Leo Maths week has a cross curricular link to geography. In both Nursery and Reception they have been learning about maps. In Reception, they have developed their understanding of positional language by creating 'zoo maps'. Lots of our children took on the 'maths week challenge' and created their own treasure map with coordinates. Scroll down to see a range of the entries as well as the winners!
Well done to all the children who entered the competition. After careful consideration of all the entries the following children won: 3rd place with a map of Europe and the coordinates of each country is Joseph in Kestrels, 2nd place with a world map including facts is Christy in Eagles and 1st place (winning a £20 Amazon voucher) is Albert in Robins class.
3rd place 1st place 2nd place
All Aboard the big, red Nursery bus!
This week Nursery have had a fantastic time exploring the wonderful London bus. They thoroughly enjoyed taking turns driving the bus and picking up passengers. There were even mechanics on hand to fix it when it broke down. Alongside looking at buses, they looked at different road signs and how to be safe when out, especially when crossing the roads. They looked at different road signs and the colours of traffic lights.
They also thoroughly enjoyed the warm weather. They had great fun cooling off in the paddling pools - some even had a spa experience!
To celebrate maths week, they also had a go at creating their own maps.
They also had great fun trying to help the animals escape from the ice cubes.
What a busy week!
In Reception this week the children have read 'Handa's Surprise'. They had a great time tasting all of the exotic fruit in 'Handa's basket. They loved the oranges, banana and pineapple. But they weren't so keen on guava and passionfruit! Being creative, they painted the fruit they had tasted. As authors, they recorded sentences on Seesaw describing the fruit, using their devices as sound buttons to support their writing. They have had great fun in the outside learning environment using a toothbrush and water as their writing implement to have a go at spelling key words. We also love reading their weekend news!
As mathematicians, they have been showing different ways to make 5 using the representation of different fruit!
In the hot weather, they have loved keeping cool, playing in the water trays.
They have also had lots of fun working collaboratively to use the LEGO train set learning how different coloured parts programme the train to do different actions.
It has been a very hot assessment week this week. The children have all tried very hard and have made wonderful progress. We are extremely proud of them.
In English, the children have learnt the features of recount writing. They were all very excited to write about their trip to Hampton Court Palace. The children tried hard to use time adverbials, adjectives to describe and full sentences. Many children used capital letters and full stops correctly and it was wonderful to see some use exclamation marks.
In Mathematics, the children have been learning about money. They were identifying values of coins and how many pennies make a 20p, 50p, £20. They identified value of notes. They matched the correct coins to its value and played shops using the right coins to buy items.
Can you play shops at home with your child - a teddy is 58p what coins do I need?
The children loved D.T this week as they explored fruits and got to taste a variety of different fruit preparations for making their fruit salad next week. They discussed which was their favorite and why they liked or disliked the fruit, describing it.
Can you try a variety of fruits? Passion fruit, pomegranate etc
In History, the children have explored Tudor houses and have identified their features e.g. chimneys, windows and daub. They labelled a Tudor house for their activity.
Year 2 have had another great week of learning.
In computing, they have once again been using Canva but this week they have used the tools to be digital artists, learning how to create different shades of colours and textures.
As historians, they used Thinglink to research the changes in the fire brigade since the Great Fire of London using the immersive reader to help them collate lots of facts.
Can you ask them two ways in which the fire brigade changes after The Great Fire of London?
As mathematicians, they have been continuing to learn about fractions of numbers. They used Polypad to help them create pictorial representations to calculate different fractions of amounts.
Can you ask them what 1/3 of 15 is?
In DT, continuing to look at structures, they looked at who could build the tallest 'stable' structure out of paper cups. Experimenting, they found they required a wide base to make a more table tower.
Great job!
Birthdays - polite reminder
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
If you do bring in treats, we will NOT hand them out. We expect you and your child to hand them out so you can check if parents are happy for their child to receive the treat.
Happy birthday to Prashanya. Thank you for donating this book to our library.
Happy birthday to Noah. Thank you for donating this book to our library.
Happy birthday to all our pupils who have celebrated a birthday this week.
If you would like to inform us of any achievements your child has completed outside of school, please complete this FORM

Children and young people are bound to spend lots more time on devices since Covid. DON’T FEEL BAD – lots will be schoolwork or healthy ways of catching up with friends or having fun. There are many ways to keep them safe, healthy and happy.
Read these six top tips to help your children to keep safe online.
There are many different views about physical chastisement, but it is widely accepted there are much more effective ways to teach children right from wrong.
As a local authority, Sutton has seen a number of children coming to the attention of police and social care due to the use of physical chastisement and as such has worked with other local authorities on an initiative to reduce this number.
In line with this initiative, we agree that anything that causes harm to a child is unacceptable.
As a school, we have a duty to report incidents of suspected or confirmed physical chastisement to social care and the police and this can be with ot without visible bruising, grazes, scratches, minor swelling, cuts as well as stress injuries from prolonged standing, position holding as these are banned by law in the United Kingdom.
Smacking or chastising that does not leave a mark is now illegal in Wales and Scotland, and there is currently pressure being placed on the Government to make it illegal in England and Northern Ireland too. It is therefore important to understand that even if a child has been smacked but no injuries are visible, social care or the police may still choose to take further action.
If you would like support on how to manage your child’s behaviour at home, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to help.

Surrey County Council encourages residents to foster
Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that can transform the lives of both the children being fostered and the foster carers themselves. Children who enter the care system have often experienced trauma and instability in their lives, and a caring, stable foster family can make a significant difference in their wellbeing and development.
Nationally, there are currently over 70,000 children living with foster families in the UK. However, there is still a significant shortage of foster carers, with around 9,265 new foster families needed in the next year alone. In Surrey, there are over 1,000 children in care and Surrey County Council have just under 400 foster families.
Foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fostering. Whether you are single or married, young or old, own your own home or rent, you can still become a foster carer. The most important thing is a willingness to provide a safe and loving home for a child in need.
This is the message that Surrey County Council is promoting in national recruitment film ‘Any of Us’. The short film has been jointly funded by over 80 councils across England and aims to raise awareness about fostering, particularly among those people who may not have previously considered themselves suited to fostering. The film looks at the potential of three people from different backgrounds to become foster carers, and the potential of children they care for to grow and thrive. ‘Any of Us’ will be available to watch from 26 September.
If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that first step and find out more. The more people who consider fostering, the greater the chance of finding loving, stable homes for children in Surrey who desperately need them.
You can contact Surrey County Council Fostering Service on 0800 096 9626, via email at fostering.recruitment@surreycc.gov.uk or by visiting the website; www.surreycc.gov.uk/fostering
You can watch ‘Any of Us’ via Any of Us - YouTube and connect with the Fostering Service on social media via @surreyfostering
