Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
What a fantastic action-packed Autumn term we have had, culminating in our fantastic Christmas productions.
We hope you all have a wonderful festive break and a very happy new year. We look forward to seeing you when we return on Wednesday 4th January 2023.
Goodbye and Good Luck
Mrs Wasti who after working and supporting children at CCI for ten years has decided to take some time away from working to focus on her hobbies. We will miss her creative flair and look forward to seeing her creations.
We also say goodbye to Miss Lane who is leaving us to go and work as a Year 2 teacher in Miss Thorndycraft's school in Surrey. We will miss her and we wish her every success in her new role.
Elf Run
We had lots of fun completing our sponsored elf run and we raised £777 for St Raphael's hospice. Thank you to all who donated. If you haven't yet donated you can here.
From 4th January 2023 there will no longer be an option to report a child’s absence via phone. We ask that you use the google forms below (and on the website) to report absence from then on.

Our daily sustainable focus
Mindful Monday
Thinking about the impact of our actions (meat free meals, turning off lights, screens, being careful to recycle properly).
Tidy up Tuesday
Collecting rubbish from around the school to protect our local environment and wildlife.
Walk to school Wednesday
Reduce our carbon footprint and improve the air quality in our local community.
Thrifty Thursday
Helping the local community to reduce, reuse and recycle by donating items to school that you no longer require.
Feel good Friday
The Eco Squad reflect and feedback to their classes on the positive impact we have made during the week including counting crisp packets - there will be a prize for the best class at the end of each term. They will also relay positive stories about how scientists are coming up with solutions to our sustainability problems around the world.
Feel good Friday
This week Reception pupils have been planning a rewilding project with our Forest school teacher Mrs Holding.
We are delighted to be working closely with Mrs Holding to develop our own tiny little Forest School to increase biodiversity at CCI.
Please remember....
This week the Eco Squad are collecting mince pie cases to reuse in art lessons after Christmas.
Congratulations again to our Playtime Buddies who have worked hard to help us achieve The Positive Playtime Award.
Snow Fun!
Nursery enjoyed our wintry weather. They played in the snow, formed snowballs and made a snowman.
Christmas Parties
We had great fun playing games, dancing and laughing at our Christmas parties. We also had a visit from Father Christmas. Our Reception children couldn't wait to give him the letters they had written to him.
Thank you to Friends of Cheam Common for supplying the delicious snacks.
Christmas Lunch
Delicious food, singing Christmas carols and pulling crackers with some funny jokes.
We all had a wonderful time at our Christmas lunch on Wednesday.
A massive thank you to our Midday Supervisors and catering team who made sure we all had a fantastic time.
Reception Christmas Songs
The Reception children took us on a Special Baby Hunt during their Christmas performance.
They sung beautifully to retell the Nativity and performed the actions clearly for all to help us all get into the Christmas spirit. Super work!
Nursery Christmas Songs
Our wonderful nursery children performed a festive treat with their Christmas songs.
They were so brave and confident singing their Christmas songs to help tell the story of the Nativity.
Well done!
Year 1 and 2 The First Nativity
It was great to be back at the Church for our Key Stage One performance. The year 2s were fantastic narrators and actors and the year 1s sang and danced beautifully. It was a fantastic show retelling the story of the nativity. Well done!
A special thank you to all our parent helpers.

To help you keep your child safe while they are online please visit parentsafe.lgfl.net. This is a one-stop location for support and advice. If your child is receiving an electronic device remember:
Controls are easier to put on a device at the start before you give it to a child
Smart devices are no safer than traditional ones and are often given to youngest children - here's a great guide from Common Sense Media
These step by step parental control guides by Internet Matters will help you set up the right controls and privacy settings on the networks, gadgets, apps, and sites they use for a safer online experience.
LGFL's digital family agreement can help manage expectations and clarify what is allowed...or not, how much time you can spend on devices, and ground rules like no phones at the table or in bedrooms at night.
With Xmas fast approaching some children will be getting new or upgraded devices, older devices may be handed to younger children. This is an ideal time to get information out to parents about the importance of setting up devices with parental controls in relation to the age of the child. Internet Matters covers all devices with very simple, easy-to-understand parental guides which you can find HERE.
There are also some good console buying advice and tips HERE.
Sony Playstation and Internet Matters have got together and created a wonderful interactive quiz for children and parents to learn together how to make the most of Playstation settings for safer gaming. This is a great idea to get conversations going and for parents to learn more about the games which their children play.
You can access the interactive quiz HERE.
Advice by age:
Younger children need different advice and guidance than older children. Older children need different advice and guidance than teens. It can be really difficult keeping up with everything that is online and what risks and issues may affect children of different ages, so on these pages there is some age-related advice and guidance for parents and carers:
Pre-school - https://www.internetmatters.org/advice/0-5/
6 - 10 year olds - https://www.internetmatters.org/advice/6-10/
Safety/privacy settings on social media:
With many children and young people using social media it is important to understand what features are available to you to help protect your children. This is also important because for the most part, all privacy settings are default off when a new account is created, but also because some social media providers change their features quite frequently, e.g. TikTok.
Take a look at this link to see what is available to you and how to set up your child's social media. We would also advise doing this with your child so that you can discuss the features together.

Useful new features on YouTube and YouTube Kids
YouTube is hugely popular with all age groups but historically parents haven't had a lot of control over what their children can/cannot watch. But things have changed and YouTube now gives parents a greater degree of control. It isn't perfect but it is a step in the right direction. Take a look at the page below where you will see a few short videos of newer features that can help you on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

Gaming
Finding good games, as well as knowing what is appropriate for the age of the child isn't easy, particularly when there can be lots of peer pressure to play the more popular games which are not always appropriate. Taming Gaming is a great resource for parents to find new games for children as well as lots of advice about content, suitability etc.

WARM WEDNESDAYS
This winter will be a difficult time for many families and households as, despite the government’s energy cap, they struggle to afford energy bills and cope with the rising cost of food. Churches in Epsom & Ewell, working in partnership with Surrey County Council, are committed to showing God’s love in action. The churches across the borough are aiming to provide a network of spaces where people can go and be warm and enjoy hot food and drinks on different days. As its contribution to this initiative Epsom Methodist Church is supporting a ‘Warm Wednesdays' initiative from November to February
During Warm Wednesdays we’ll also be providing opportunities for people to drop in and talk to advisers about energy saving, accessing grants and benefits and managing family finances.
