Updates

Thank you to Cheam Common Friends and all the parent helpers who made the Year 1 and Year 2 disco such a success.

The children had a wonderful time showing off their dancing moves.  In addition to the huge amount of fun, the Junior and Infant discos made £2052.37.  As always, thank you for your support.

On Friday, we learnt about the Hindu celebration of Diwali.  Some of our pupils came to school dressed in their traditional or celebratory clothing and shared with us how they were going to celebrate the festival of light.

We would like to wish all our families a very happy Diwali.

BRONZE ACCREDITATION

I am pleased to share with you we have been accredited the Bronze TfL Travel for life award.  We would like to say a huge 'Thank you' to Miss Abbott for all her hard work providing evidence of the different travel and supporting activities we complete last week.

Thank you to you for all your support during 'Walking or Scootering to school weeks'.

Anti bullying week is Monday 13th to Friday 17th November.

In order to celebrate what makes us unique, children are invited to wear odd socks to school on Monday 13th November.

Once again, we will be supporting Children in Need this year.  In exchange for a donation, children can wear something 'spotty' on Friday.  We are trying to be cash free so please use the QR code or click here to make your donation.  Many thanks for your support for this worthy cause.

We are excited to announce that our book fair is arriving on Monday 13th November.

Books will be available to buy on both of our Parent Consultation Evenings as well as some mornings (in the front playground near the school entrance - weather dependent.)

For every book purchased scholastic donate books to our school - we are hoping to add some new non fiction books to our library.

Scholastic Book Fairs are now cashless so payment will be online - the payment system is accessed via a QR code so please remember to bring a mobile device with you so you can access this and avoid disappointment.

A perfect opportunity to buy early Christmas presents!

Nursery

What a busy week Nursery have had.  They have been making poppies using different printing techniques.  They have also been developing their digital skills as well as practising writing their name and mark making.  Great job!

Reception

This week Reception have been learning storytelling language using Pie Corbett's 'Talk for Writing' and 'The Little Red Hen'.

We have had dramatic renditions of the story on our stage in the outside area. We have some amazing budding actors!

The children have enjoyed ordering the parts of the story, writing speech bubbles and creating their own storymaps.

Our number of the week was '6'.  We learnt about the composition of number 6 and explored how to make it in different ways.

We have been learning about 'Diwali' and shared our experiences of the Festival of Light.

Thinking like historians, we have learnt about the significance of 'Remembrance Day'. We made our own poppy prints using potatoes and carrots.

We also learnt about the history of time telling through our Poem of the Week: Hickory Dickory Dock.

We learnt that clocks have changed since the past and we enjoyed exploring historical artefacts such as a pocket watch.

Year 1

Acting like historians, the Year 1 children created a toy museum.  They sorted toys from the past and those from the present articulating why they had put the toys in the different category.  They have been learning about sources in History and have explored looking in books for facts about toys, using the internet safely to explore museums and exploring toys from the past.

Thinking like mathematicians, the children have learnt that when adding and subtracting with zero the number remains the same.  They have explored doubling by printing and loved making pretty butterflies. In English the children have sequenced the story of 'Lost in the Toy Museum' and have written amazing sentences for the middle and end of the story. They are working very hard on letter formation and writing their letters smaller and neatly.

Speaking like a scientist, the children have described the properties of materials using ambitious  technical vocabulary.

What a great week of learning we have had :)

Year 2

Year Two have been looking at maps when working as geographers.  They enjoyed looking up places in their atlases, inflatable globes and using Google Earth.

In financial literacy, we discussed the question 'why do we need money?'  We found out that, in the past, people used bartering to swap goods with each other.  It was a lot of fun making 'fair exchanges'.

Acting as mathematicians and using their Chromebooks, the children found the difference between the heights of different bars in bar graphs and the pictures of a pictogram.

Happy birthday to all our pupils who have celebrated a birthday this week.

Happy 7th birthday to Ruby.  Thank you for donating the Princess and the Giant to our library.

As a healthy school we ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to the library instead of bringing treats for the class. The book will help us to grow our library and ensure we are promoting healthy eaters.

We will display a photo of your child with their book in the newsletter.

Our daily sustainable focus

Mindful Monday

Feel good Friday

The Eco Squad reflect and feedback to their classes on the positive impact we have made during the week including counting crisp packets - there will be a prize for the best class at the end of each term. They will also relay positive stories about how scientists are coming up with solutions to our sustainability problems around the world.

Following the success of the conker competition The ECO SQUAD have a new challenge for you!

Stickman is missing.....

Stickman is lost!

Don't forget to add any suggestions of how we can be more sustainable to our suggestion box!

This week the Eco Squad have been learning all about compost. We learnt that we need a good mix of green and brown to make good compost and started by collecting lots of leaves to add to our compost bin!

Please keep searching for Stickman....closing date for entries to the competion is 1/12/23.

Safeguarding

Talk PANTS helps children understand that their body belongs to them, and they should tell someone they trust if anything makes them feel upset or worried.

Click here for further information and support.

There are many different views about physical chastisement, but it is widely accepted there are much more effective ways to teach children right from wrong.

As a local authority, Sutton has seen a number of children coming to the attention of police and social care due to the use of physical chastisement and as such has worked with other local authorities on an initiative to reduce this number.

In line with this initiative, we agree that anything that causes harm to a child is unacceptable.

As a school, we have a duty to report incidents of suspected or confirmed physical chastisement to social care and the police and this can be with ot without visible bruising, grazes, scratches, minor swelling, cuts as well as stress injuries from prolonged standing, position holding as these are banned by law in the United Kingdom.

Smacking or chastising that does not leave a mark is now illegal in Wales and Scotland, and there is currently pressure being placed on the Government to make it illegal in England and Northern Ireland too. It is therefore important to understand that even if a child has been smacked but no injuries are visible, social care or the police may still choose to take further action.

If you would like support on how to manage your child’s behaviour at home, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to help.

Opportunities

Surrey County Council encourages residents to foster

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that can transform the lives of both the children being fostered and the foster carers themselves. Children who enter the care system have often experienced trauma and instability in their lives, and a caring, stable foster family can make a significant difference in their wellbeing and development.

Nationally, there are currently over 70,000 children living with foster families in the UK. However, there is still a significant shortage of foster carers, with around 9,265 new foster families needed in the next year alone. In Surrey, there are over 1,000 children in care and Surrey County Council have just under 400 foster families.

Foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fostering. Whether you are single or married, young or old, own your own home or rent, you can still become a foster carer. The most important thing is a willingness to provide a safe and loving home for a child in need.

This is the message that Surrey County Council is promoting in national recruitment film ‘Any of Us’. The short film has been jointly funded by over 80 councils across England and aims to raise awareness about fostering, particularly among those people who may not have previously considered themselves suited to fostering. The film looks at the potential of three people from different backgrounds to become foster carers, and the potential of children they care for to grow and thrive. ‘Any of Us’ will be available to watch from 26 September.

If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that first step and find out more. The more people who consider fostering, the greater the chance of finding loving, stable homes for children in Surrey who desperately need them.

You can contact Surrey County Council Fostering Service on 0800 096 9626, via email at fostering.recruitment@surreycc.gov.uk or by visiting the website; www.surreycc.gov.uk/fostering

You can watch ‘Any of Us’ via Any of Us - YouTube and connect with the Fostering Service on social media via @surreyfostering
