STEEL PAN DRUMMING

Our Year 2s had a wonderful time today, learning to play the Steel Pan Drums with Shareen from the Steel Pan Trust.

Year 1 and 2 were delighted to hear 'Baby Shark' played on the Steel Pan Drums as well as learn all about the origins of the steel pan drums.  Year 2 were then fortunate enough to have sessions learning how to 'roll' the notes.

FRIENDS' DISCOS

A massive thank you to 'Friends' and all the parent helpers who organised incredibly enjoyable discos for both Reception and Year 1 and Year 2 and 3.  The children had immense fun showing off their dance moves!

Nursery

Ahoy Mateys!

Continuing looking at modes of transport, Nursery has left dry land and moved to the sea!  They had great fun pretending to be pirates and sailing the Seven Seas singing 'A pirates life for me' as well as 'The Big Sails..' coinciding with World Ocean Day on Monday.

They have been investigating the concept of floating and sinking testing whether different objects sink or float.  They also made their own boats to test!

Being creative, they have had lots of fun creating pipette art!

As authors, they have been having lots of fun using 'Tales Toolkit' to create their own story including characters, setting, a problem and resolution.

They have also continued to develop their fine motor skills and letter formation as well as ordering numbers to 5!

We have also been making cards for the special person in our family.

What a busy week.

Reception

This week we continued to read 'The Naughty Bus.' We sequenced the story using 'First', 'Next', Then and 'Finally'. Then we wrote about London landmarks and drew pictures of them.   Being sustainable, we also made some of our favourite London landmarks using junk!

We learnt all about maps, recapping our prior knowledge. Then we went to explore Year 1 and drew maps to help our transition.

In maths we have applied our knowledge of number bonds to support our problem solving skills. We bought 'bus tickets' and learnt that different coins have different values.

In maths we Discuss money Do you pay with cash, card or phone?

In the outside environment, we had great fun being creative and building a house as well as a giant marble run!

Year 1

The children have worked very hard on their phonics this week and have all tried their very best with their phonics screening test. We are incredibly proud of their successes.

In English, the children have really enjoyed reading more of the story 'Claude at the Palace' by Alex Smith.  They are finding it very funny and have had some wonderful discussions about the cheeky characters. The children have written the rescue scene of the story and have worked hard to use exclamation marks, remembering time adverbials and conjunctions.

In Maths, the children have continued with their learning partitioning numbers to 100 in tens and ones. They have recorded this using part, part whole  for example 53 is made up of 50 (5 tens) and 5 ones. They moved on to  calculating addition and subtraction sentences and how they are interchangeable, for example 67=60 +7 and 67-7=60. This was very challenging so please can you practise this at home.

As scientists, the children enjoyed learning about where vegetables grow.

Can your child name 3 root vegetables, 3 leafy vegetables and 3 vegetables that grow on plants? (e.g. carrot, beetroot, parsnips root vegetables, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower flowery vegetables, beans, corn, peas grow on plants.)

Acting as historians, the children have learnt about Henry VIII and what makes him a significant person in History. They children learnt about how Henry VIII became head of the Church of England and that he was a Tudor King.

Can you ask your child who Henry VIII is and why he is significant?

In Design Technology, the children recapped fruits and vegetables.  They thought about why it is important to eat a variety of foods and why it is important to eat 5 a day. They explored an Eatwell plate and discussed proteins, carbohydrates, fats and healthy and unhealthy foods.

Year 2

Year 2 have had a very busy week.

At the end of last week, and to coincide with Ocean Day on Monday, they had a sessions delivered by Suitton Sports Partnership all about how to be safe in the water.  Following Mrs Harris' assembly about Ocean Day, lots of our Year 2 children found out lots of information about the sea or created fantastic sea-themed artwork (see below in the Home Learning section).

In maths, they looked at telling the time to half past and o'clock.  Some even had a go at telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes.  They practised moving the hands of a clock to show different times, remembering the hour hand has to move as well as the minute hand.

Can you ask them to tell you the time at home?

They continued learning about the Great Fire of London using 'Flipgrid' to help them record their facts and answer questions.

As designers they have been investigating different bonds.  They had great fun working collaboratively to make 'running bongs' and 'stacked bonds' using giant wooden blocks.

Can they tell you which bond is stronger and why?

They all finished the week having an amazing time playing steel drums!

Birthday celebrations

Birthdays - polite reminder

As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats.  This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.

If you do bring in treats, we will NOT hand them out.  We expect you and your child to hand them out so you can check if parents are happy for their child to receive the treat.

Happy Birthday to Jack.  Thank you for donating this book to our library.

Happy birthday to all our pupils who have celebrated a birthday this week.

Happy Birthday to Elena. Thank you for donating Charlie and the Chocolate factory to our library.

Online Safety

It's never easy to know how to keep our children safe when they aren't with us, and sometimes even when are, if we don't know what's happening in their lives or on their devices! Who are they talking to, what are they doing, are they okay? Click on the image above for help and advice.

Children and young people are bound to spend lots more time on devices since Covid. DON’T FEEL BAD – lots will be schoolwork or healthy ways of catching up with friends or having fun. There are many ways to keep them safe, healthy and happy.

Read these six top tips to help your children to keep safe online.

There are many different views about physical chastisement, but it is widely accepted there are much more effective ways to teach children right from wrong.

As a local authority, Sutton has seen a number of children coming to the attention of police and social care due to the use of physical chastisement and as such has worked with other local authorities on an initiative to reduce this number.

In line with this initiative, we agree that anything that causes harm to a child is unacceptable.

As a school, we have a duty to report incidents of suspected or confirmed physical chastisement to social care and the police and this can be with ot without visible bruising, grazes, scratches, minor swelling, cuts as well as stress injuries from prolonged standing, position holding as these are banned by law in the United Kingdom.

Smacking or chastising that does not leave a mark is now illegal in Wales and Scotland, and there is currently pressure being placed on the Government to make it illegal in England and Northern Ireland too. It is therefore important to understand that even if a child has been smacked but no injuries are visible, social care or the police may still choose to take further action.

If you would like support on how to manage your child’s behaviour at home, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to help.

Surrey County Council encourages residents to foster

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that can transform the lives of both the children being fostered and the foster carers themselves. Children who enter the care system have often experienced trauma and instability in their lives, and a caring, stable foster family can make a significant difference in their wellbeing and development.

Nationally, there are currently over 70,000 children living with foster families in the UK. However, there is still a significant shortage of foster carers, with around 9,265 new foster families needed in the next year alone. In Surrey, there are over 1,000 children in care and Surrey County Council have just under 400 foster families.

Foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fostering. Whether you are single or married, young or old, own your own home or rent, you can still become a foster carer. The most important thing is a willingness to provide a safe and loving home for a child in need.

This is the message that Surrey County Council is promoting in national recruitment film ‘Any of Us’. The short film has been jointly funded by over 80 councils across England and aims to raise awareness about fostering, particularly among those people who may not have previously considered themselves suited to fostering. The film looks at the potential of three people from different backgrounds to become foster carers, and the potential of children they care for to grow and thrive. ‘Any of Us’ will be available to watch from 26 September.

If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that first step and find out more. The more people who consider fostering, the greater the chance of finding loving, stable homes for children in Surrey who desperately need them.

You can contact Surrey County Council Fostering Service on 0800 096 9626, via email at fostering.recruitment@surreycc.gov.uk or by visiting the website; www.surreycc.gov.uk/fostering

You can watch ‘Any of Us’ via Any of Us - YouTube and connect with the Fostering Service on social media via @surreyfostering
