It is hard to believe how quickly the weeks are flying by and how much we manage to pack into them! Last week Year One had an unforgettable experience when we welcomed Tom and his incredible collection of reptiles back to the school. As many of you know, Tom's visits have become a much-loved tradition, and it truly brought their learning to life. I still have the photo in my office from the first year I arranged for Tom to visit—a slightly younger, more apprehensive me with a rather large tarantula perched on my hand! That seems like a long time ago now, when I was the Year One Lead.
The children have been deeply immersed in their topic on different animal groups, specifically focusing on reptiles, and seeing them up close provided an incredible opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge. They were able to see and interact safely with snakes, lizards, tortoises, and even a gecko, asking Tom thoughtful questions about their habitats, diets, and unique characteristics. It was a fantastic example of cross-curricular learning that we hope will inspire a lifelong curiosity about the natural world.
Beyond the excitement of the reptile encounter, we continued our important work in building community links. We had another successful visit to the local community hub. These inter-generational visits are so valuable, providing our pupils with a unique platform to practise their communication skills and build confidence. They loved sharing their learning—everything from their latest maths challenges to the imaginative stories they have written—with the older members of the community. The warmth and encouragement they receive from the residents make these visits a huge success every time, helping the children to understand their place within the wider local area.
Looking ahead, we have another week full of fun and creativity. We can’t wait to see the results of your styling efforts for Crazy Hair Day next Friday! We anticipate a spectacular array of colours and styles. Please remember to check the school notice for details on the small voluntary donation that will be collected on the day for Comic Relief.
We are also very much looking forward to the Rocksteady concert. Our talented young musicians, who have been working so hard in their band practice sessions, will be showcasing their musical talents, confidence, and rock-and-roll ability. I for one can’t wait to see their performances.
Don't forget Miss King will be leading our parent workshop on Maths Mastery on Friday 20th March, at 9am in the school hall. This will be an opportunity for you to learn a little more about how we teach the children maths at Cheam Common Infants.

Eat them to Defeat Them!
The battle was on! This week’s villains were the Powerful Peppers, and the mission was to "crunch, munch, and defeat" them. They thought they were too crunchy for us to handle—but we proved them wrong.
The Mission: Children were offered red, yellow, and green peppers at lunch.
The Reward: Every child who "defeated" a pepper by eating it earns a special sticker!
Join the fight at home! Whether they are raw strips or tucked into a sauce, every pepper eaten is a win for the team. Let’s clear those plates and get ready for next week’s veggie challenge!
Please find below all the key dates and times for the Autumn Term.

Please note our morning timings to ensure a smooth start to the school day:
8:10 am: Office reception gate opens for Universal Breakfast Club
8:30 am: Main gates (Kingsmead Road) and Nursery gate (Balmoral Road) open.
8:40 am: All gates close promptly to allow Phonics lessons to begin at 8:45 am.
Please note: These times differ from the Junior School, where gates remain open until 8:45 am. Thank you for helping us start our learning on time!
A friendly reminder that Kingsmead Avenue is not a pedestrianised zone. Even during "Safe Street" hours, residents and permit holders are still using the road.
Please talk to your children about staying on the pavement and being mindful of traffic. Many modern cars are nearly silent, so we cannot rely on our hearing alone to know when a vehicle is approaching. Let’s work together to keep our school run safe!
Be a Road Safety Hero! 🦸
To keep our school community safe, we are asking all drivers to be "Safety Heroes" on the school run. You can help by keeping driveways clear for our neighbours, slowing down near the school gates, and never parking on zig-zags or corners. Visibility is key to preventing accidents—let's work together to keep our students safe!
Thank you to everyone who has registered on our new system and booked their current sessions.
By now you should have
Registered by creating your account on the new CBfS platform.

This week in Nursery our Story of the Week was How to Look After Your Dinosaur. The children had lots of fun exploring dinosaurs through different activities. They practised their cutting skills while making dinosaur props, took part in a “Draw a Dinosaur” challenge, and used their creativity to design their own dinosaur eggs. Our sensory play with dinosaurs in cornflour and shaving foam was very popular and encouraged lots of exploring and describing. As part of Science Week, we talked about British wildlife and learned about animals we might see in the park or the forest. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and recognising familiar animals. We also made Mother’s Day cards and practised writing our names inside them – a special surprise to take home.
Miss Alder, Mrs Badea and the Nursery Team
It has been a vibrant and "hair-raising" week of learning! Our focus was all about celebrating what makes us unique, inspired by our new focus book, "Big Hair, Don’t Care!" The children embraced the message that everyone is special just the way they are and we should all be proud of ourselves.
In English, we took a trip to the (imaginary) barbershop! The children wrote fantastic stories filled with "hairy" situations. We used our Tales Toolkit structure (character, setting, problem, solution) to create wild solutions to our problems—including one memorable story where a broken hairdryer was replaced by a helicopter delivery! We used playdough and cotton buds to design the wildest hairstyles imaginable, which was a brilliant way to strengthen our fine motor skills. In Art, we explored color mixing, discovering exactly what happens when two primary colors meet on the page. We explored which primary colours mix to make secondary colours. In Maths, we dove deep into the composition of 7. We’ve been learning how to see 7 as a whole that can be broken into parts. We started with the familiar "5 and a bit" structure (5+2=7) before exploring other number bonds and identifying pairs like 6 and 1, 4 and 3, and 7 and 0.
We are excited to host Mill Cottage Farm Experience on Thursday, 16th April! This visit offers children a fantastic hands-on chance to learn about farm animals.
To make this happen, we kindly request a £5.50 voluntary contribution per pupil, payable via Arbor by Friday, 10th April.
Mrs Woods and the EYFS Team
What an exhilarating week it has been in Year One! The highlight was undoubtedly our visit from Tom’s Talking Reptiles. We were so impressed by how brave the children were as they met a hairy tarantula, held African cockroaches and stick insects, stroked a tortoise, and even handled a 6-foot python! This excitement carried into Science Week, where the children explored the features of birds and even crafted their own bird nests. It has also been Assessment Week and the children worked incredibly hard on their "special booklets" for Maths, recapping everything they have mastered so far this year. We are so proud of their focus, particularly in English, where we have been assessing their writing and reading of the 45 common exception words. Please do continue to practice spellings at home, as words like were, there, here, where, and they can be particularly tricky! Finally, in D.T., the children enjoyed a hands-on session learning about mechanisms, successfully using horizontal sliders to create wavy movements. Well done, Year One, for such a busy and successful week!
Mrs MP and the Year 1 Team
This week, Year Two embarked on a journey through art, technology, and the natural world! We began by replicating the distinctive brushstrokes of Van Gogh and Cézanne, experimenting with colour mixing to create our own masterpieces.
Our budding coders used LEGO Spike to programme ‘animal alarms’, to activate lights by using colour sensors. It was a great opportunity for the children to demonstrate problem solving and collaboration skills. In Maths, we mastered the language of division—identifying dividends, divisors, and quotients. The children then applied this to solve ‘grouping’ word problems by skip-counting using the divisor.
Our writing skills were put to the test as we crafted engaging narratives from the viewpoint of the Bala Mengro, incorporating ambitious vocabulary and figurative language. In Science, we explored classification, grouping animals according to their physical features. Finally, we broadened our global perspective in Geography by comparing continents and investigating how the equator dictates climate.
Mrs Harris and the Year 2 Team
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
We will share any photos of children and their birthday books here every week!

Free Educational Resources - Child Accident Prevention Trust
When safeguarding is discussed, the focus is often on issues such as abuse, online harms and exploitation. However, for many children—particularly younger children—the most immediate risks are often far more ordinary.
Accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury for children. Everyday environments such as homes and schools contain hazards that curious children naturally explore. Behaviours like putting objects in their mouths, touching hot surfaces, or experimenting with things they do not yet understand can quickly lead to harm.
The Child Accident Prevention Trust is a UK charity working to reduce accidental injuries among children. Their online resource centre provides a range of free materials for professionals, including fact sheets, posters and activity resources covering risks such as burns, poisoning, choking hazards and road safety.
If you are interested in their materials, you can access the resource centre using the link below.
Consultation: Statutory Guidance: Medical conditions at school (DfE)
The Department for Education is consulting on proposed updates to the statutory guidance on supporting pupils with medical conditions at school
As part of the proposal, schools would be required for the first time to hold spare adrenaline auto-injectors (allergy pens) for emergency use. The guidance would also introduce mandatory allergy awareness training for staff and require schools to maintain a clear policy for supporting pupils with medical conditions, including the use of Individual Healthcare Plans where appropriate.
The proposals follow campaigning by families and allergy charities after the death of a five-year-old following an allergic reaction at school. The government says the changes aim to improve consistency in how schools respond to medical emergencies and better support pupils with allergies.
While CCI already has a robust system in place, whereby training, policy and healthcare plans are already in-situ. We value the importance that this consultation has placed on student safety. This new guidance aligns with our existing commitment to proactive allergy management, ensuring that schools across the country meet the high standards we already strive for at Cheam Common Infants. We believe these measures provide vital peace of mind for parents and a safer, more inclusive environment for all children.
The consultation is open and expected changes would come into force in September 2026 if approved.
The consultation documents can be found here:
https://consult.education.gov.uk/medical-conditions-at-school/medical-conditions-at-school-statutory-guidance/
We ask that you use one of the Google Forms below to report absence.
Request for Exceptional Absence form in advance for future appointments and exception absence.

Same-Day Absences You can now log same-day absences directly via the Arbor App (under the Attendance section) or via our Same-Day Absence Google Form.
Note: The Arbor feature is for same-day use only. Future or extended absences must be requested via the Exceptional Absence Form.
Attendance Update 📢
You can check your child's current marks anytime via the Arbor app.
Please remember that persistent absence or 10+ sessions of lateness can result in Local Authority fines. We look forward to working together to support your child’s progress!
Booking Appointments
We ask for your support in ensuring children get the most out of every school day. We have recently noticed an increase in pupils being collected mid-day for routine check-ups.
To minimise disruption to learning and class focus, please:
Book routine appointments (dentists/GP) outside of school hours.
Provide written confirmation (letter or email) if an appointment during school hours is unavoidable.
Frequent mid-day collections not only impact your child’s learning but also create significant administrative work for our staff. Thank you for helping us keep the focus on the classroom.
