News and information

It has been a very busy and exciting week. We have had performances from Reception and the Rock Steady children. It has been great to see the children perform confidently. We are looking forward to the Key Stage 1 production in the last week of term. It was also great to see so many families supporting the Christmas Fair. The end of term is fast approaching and on Monday booking for Key Stage One Spring clubs will be open from 4pm. Dates for other Spring events will be shared shortly.

New adventures

Mrs Rosewell has been appointed as a senior leader at Chipstead Valley Primary school. Whilst the school will be sad to see Mrs Rosewell move on we also recognise that this is a wonderful opportunity and achievement for her as she will be able to use her management skills in a primary school setting. I hope you will join me in congratulating her.

Mrs Rosewell has been at Cheam Common Infants’ for 17 years. Throughout her time at CCI, Mrs Rosewell completed her NQT year and then after 8 years became the deputy head. She also stepped up as acting head last summer. Throughout her time at CCI Mrs Rosewell trained and became the SENDCO. Recently she has been leading on behaviour and ensuring it is upheld across the school. I know Robins class and staff will miss her dearly.

From January, Miss Cummings will be in Robin’s class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Miss Cummings has worked at Cheam Common Infants’ since October and has already made relationships with the children. Mrs Rosewell will ensure she shares information with Miss Cummings before the end of term.

I also wanted to share with you that Mrs Buckeridge will also be leaving at Christmas. Mrs Buckeridge and her husband have decided to move to Devon. Mrs Buckeridge has worked at CCI for 17 years. Many of you will have witnessed her enthusiasm and passion in ensuring every child is given the greatest opportunity to learn, develop and take part. She has worked on supporting pupil premium children and leading on music. Mrs Buckeridge has been a particular support to me as we worked together to implement new topics into our curriculum. Even though this is a sad time for Cheam Common Infants’, we wish both of them well on their new adventures.

In January, Mrs Dallimore will continue her secondment as Vice Principal and Inclusion lead at Cheam Common Infants’. We are very lucky to have her continue her work with us as she knows the school very well.

We will be recruiting for a Vice Principal in the coming months and will keep you updated on our progress.

Read, Write, Inc EYFS parent workshop

Last week there was a EYFS Read, Write, Inc workshop where 70 parents attended to find out about Set 1 sounds and how phonics is taught. Mrs Hughes and Mrs Dallimore talked through slides and explained key concepts on how to get Reception children to read.

Parking

We have had a few complaints from our neighbours about parking considerately. Please do not park across drives or on single yellow lines or double yellow lines. They are there for keeping our children safe. Remember you can park and stride from Waitrose car park but remember to get a ticket. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Christmas Post box

From December 9th there will be a post box for children to post their Christmas cards. Then the Year 1 classes and Year 2 classes will take it in turns to deliver the cards to the classrooms. The last post will be December 17th. Please make sure you write the child's first name and class.

Christmas cards

Thank you to Friends for organising the Christmas cards the children designed. The printed cards look great. They have raised £267.00.

Christmas Fair

On November 30th we had our Christmas Fair. There were lots of stalls to explore and lots of games to play. The choir sang beautifully and they could even be heard from the back of the hall! Thank you to the Friends for organising such a successful event and thank you to all the staff and parents who helped. We raised an amazing £4413.75. Thank you! We will be using the money to purchase Pie Corbett books for each class as well as Read, Write, Inc story books to read to the children before their phonics lesson. We will be purchasing more resources soon.

KS1 Christmas Production

We hope you are able to join us at Christchurch with St Philip on Tuesday 17th December or Wednesday 18th December at 9.30am. The church is a five minutes’ walk from the school. Every year, Gabriel and the angels celebrate Christmas by bringing children from around the world to visit the manger. Travelling from as far afield as China, Malawi, Poland and Australia, each group is brought to the stable where every class will tell of their special Christmas custom, sing a song and present a gift. We hope you can join us. If possible please try and find a friend or member of the family to look after any younger children. There will be a retiring collection to support Mkunkhu Primary School and its community in Malawi through African Vision Malawi, the charity with whom we link.

School Fund

Thank you to all parents and carers who have already donated to our school fund. If you have not already donated and would like to donate we use our school fund in various ways.

Due to our creative curriculum in school the children have a chance to cook with their classes, have a ‘Making Day’ where they make lots of exciting Christmas crafts, take part in World Book Day and celebrate different festivals, as well as enjoy theatre workshops to enrich the curriculum.

Therefore we are writing to you to ask for a voluntary contribution of £15 per child or £5 per term to enable us to purchase the resources/ingredients for our exciting creative curriculum.

This donation will also cover the costs of the children’s Christmas Parties.

You may pay by debit or credit card via your Parentmail account. Please log into PMXParentmail and choose the accounts section and select School Fund 2019-2020

Learning

Nursery

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in The Nursery. The children have started their Christmas Countdown with our class Advent Calendars, helped to decorate our rooms and have been as busy as Christmas elves cutting, designing, printing, writing, creating and smiling for their special Christmas surprises.

They are working hard learning our Christmas songs ready for our ‘Family Festive Fun’ on Wednesday 11th December and they can’t wait to make you all proud!

We have also been enjoying Christmas stories and enjoyed a treat of watching Stickman helping Father Christmas.

We are looking forward to welcoming you all into Nursery next week.

Reception

This week Reception had a special visitor. A child from Badgers brought in their pet stick insect. All of the children were keen to take a close look!

Year 1

In Science Year One have been thinking about how different animals survive winter. The children sorted animals into different groups. Animals that migrate, adapt and hibernate in order to survive the winter months. The children chose an animal and described how they survive winter.

Year 2

Year 2 have been lucky enough to look through these colourful new atlases as part of their 'Christmas Around the World' topic. They've been learning all about continents and Christmas traditions in the Southern Hemisphere this week!

Opportunity

EYFS Christmas Production

This week Reception children performed in the Nursery Rhyme Nativity. Five Year 6 children were the narrators and they spoke clearly. The children sang wonderfully and some of the children were acting too. All of the parents enjoyed the three performances. At the beginning and end of the performance we collected money for Malawi. We will be collecting money at the Key Stage One production as well.

Rock Steady concert

On Tuesday this week 54 of our KS1 children performed to their parents, grandparents and carers at our Rock steady concert. They have made really good progress from September, when the new bands were formed, and have obviously had lots of fun learning a new instrument. They demonstrated their new musical skills of keeping to the beat and their memories are developing as they play their notes or sing their words. They have been learning how to work collaboratively, listening to the sounds made by their other band members. Performing in front of an audience is a huge confidence booster – so well done Rock steady stars!

KS2 performance

On Wednesday Year Two were delighted to be invited to the Cheam Common Juniors to watch the choir and Orchestra perform. Many of the Junior children performing had started to play the violin or sing in a choir here at the Infants’ so it was inspiring for the children to see what they can go onto achieve. They saw a wider number of instruments being played and heard wind instruments, percussion and brass. The visit was also part of our transition programme for Year Two in preparation for next September. We were very proud of their behaviour and attitude as they sat and watched the performance.

Bikeability

So far Owls, Eagles, Kestrels, Finches, Sparrows and Robins have really enjoyed the Bikeability sessions.

Bikeability is a cycle training programme. It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling.
