Happy New Year.
Welcome back after the Christmas break! I hope you all had a lovely time, and I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2026.
Despite this being called the Spring Term, the weather has certainly not felt very 'spring-like' this week. Please be assured that we take the safety of your children very seriously. Mr. Chalke has been very busy on these icy mornings, ensuring the playgrounds are gritted and safe. We always conduct a thorough early morning site walk before school to check that the area is safe for everyone.
This week, I conducted the final pre-arranged parent tours. It was a pleasure to walk around the school and observe how settled and happy the children are. Several parents commented positively on the engagement and excellent behaviour of our students at Cheam Common. The teachers are delighted with how much the children have retained over the break, and our Year 1 and 2 pupils have fully embraced the learning in their new phonics groups.
We are delighted to welcome Mr. Raney to the Cheam Common team. He led an assembly on Tuesday for Years 1 and 2 to introduce himself. Mr. Raney will be serving as a Vice Principal at CCI alongside Mr. Strange and will also be teaching in Robins every Wednesday morning and in Squirrels all day on a Thursday.
In other exciting news, Mrs. Woods has been successful in securing the additional role of Reception Trust Lead. This means she will be supporting all Reception teachers across the Trust, ensuring our youngest learners receive the best possible start to their educational journey. This role will be her new Thursday focus.
Please join us in wishing both Mr. Raney and Mrs. Woods the very best of luck in their new roles.
The LEO Trust is committed to the continuous growth and development of all staff. We are currently enhancing the expertise of our Early Years teaching assistants (TAs). To achieve this, many of our TAs will be gaining experience in different classes over the next couple of terms. This mirrors our practice in Key Stage One, where TAs work across both Year One and Year Two, ensuring our Early Years TAs develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all age ranges within the Early Years Foundation Stage.
We are also pleased to announce a new apprenticeship opportunity for candidates starting in September 2026. This is for a L3 Early Years Educator (must be aged 17+) who would be based in our school nursery. If you know anyone who would be 17+ in September and would be interested in this role please direct them to the LEO Website vacancies for more information.
We have a busy term ahead of us with lots of fun and exciting learning experiences planned for the children. Year Two are off to Brooklands and we will be welcoming visitors from other schools to watch our excellent teaching practice at Cheam Common. Next week is looking to be a little warmer but unfortunately much wetter here in Worcester Park. In order to get their wishes of snow they would need to join Mrs Hart and some of our Junior children who are off to Finland and Lapland where it is currently -28 degrees feels like -32! I can’t wait to hear all about their exciting adventures and wish them safe travels.

Nursery
We have had a lovely start to the term as the children settle back into their daily routines after the Christmas and New Year break. They have enjoyed sharing their memories and talking about the exciting things they did over the holidays, helping to build confidence and communication skills.
This term, the children are learning all about 2D shapes, exploring their names and properties and finding different shapes in the environment. They are also continuing to practise writing their names, supporting early mark-making and letter recognition. It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged and happy to be back learning and playing together.
Reception
Reception have had a wonderful first week back. The children have read the book When I Grow Up by Melanie Joyce and were excited to talk about the different ideas in the story such as pirate, inventor and rock star. They have also enjoyed painting pictures and writing about what they would like to be when they grow up! We have quite a variety of careers! Inspired by the page about pirates, the children have completed some geography work on maps and created their own pirate treasure maps with exciting places such as Mermaid Cove and Shark Infested Sea!
Happy New Year! It has been a wonderful first week of 2026 for Year One and it was lovely to see the children settle back into their school routines so beautifully. There was a lot of excitement in the air as they reunited with their friends, saw snow and dived straight back into their learning.
In English, we have been captivated by our new book, ‘Halibut Jackson’. The children enjoyed drawing the main character and worked hard on writing character descriptions that explored both his unique appearance and his feelings throughout the story.
Our Maths lessons this week focused on the world of numbers and patterns. We explored the difference between odd and even numbers, practised skip counting with 2, 4, 6, 8,10. The children also partitioned numbers from 6 to 10 in various ways and are becoming incredibly confident with this skill.
Science was a real highlight this week as we turned into young investigators to explore our sense. The children enjoyed tasting and smelling a variety of different foods, which led to some very interesting discussions!
In Financial Literacy the children investigated what makes an object "valuable." The children also looked closely at different coins to identify which holds the highest value. It has been an incredibly busy week of learning, but one filled with plenty of fun and smiles.
Year 2 has had a fantastic start to the new term! It was wonderful to have the children back in school, demonstrating such curiosity and eagerness to learn. They were keen to share their Christmas news and put their knowledge of regular and irregular past tenses to good use when writing recounts of their exciting holidays.
In History, we have begun learning about how transport has changed over time. The children were amazed at how different bicycles and cars looked in the past! We created a timeline of vehicle inventions to develop their understanding of chronological order and the progression of technology.
In Science, the children have been enthusiastically exploring materials. We investigated various household objects, identifying what they were made from and how their specific properties made them fit for purpose.
This term, the children will have the exciting opportunity to build their own cars. This week, we explored existing products by labelling the wheels, axles, and chassis on toy cars and scooters. We investigated why wheels need to be round before having a go at creating our own wheels and axles.
Maths was especially engaging this week as we began our work on multiplication. The children have been comparing equal and unequal groups and representing them using both repeated addition and multiplication expressions.
Well done, Year 2, for all your hard work this week!
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
We will share any photos of children and their birthday books here every week!

Communication
To help us assist you more efficiently when you email the school office, we kindly request that you include your child's class along with their name in your correspondence.
While we know all our students very well, having the class information readily available helps us to quickly identify your child and address your queries without any delay or guesswork.
For example, please consider writing: "Regarding [Child's Full Name], [Class, e.g., Year R - Squirrels]" in the subject line or at the beginning of your email.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated and will help us continue to provide the best possible support to you and your children.
Thank you for your understanding.
Moving address
If you have moved address, it is imperative that you inform the school office as soon as you have moved. It is a requirement that the school has up to date details particularly in case of an emergency.
Please email the school office ccioffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk if your details need updating. Alternatively you can update them using the Arbor App.
They are also available to complete on our website using the parent tab.
We do not authorise holidays during term time. If your child is going to be off school due to an exceptional circumstance, then please complete this form:
You can also log same-day absences for your children directly through the Parent Portal or Arbor App. Simply navigate to the Attendance section, click "Log Absence," and fill in the details. You can adjust the start and end times if it is not a full-day absence. Once submitted, school staff will review and either approve or reject the request. You will see approved absences in the Attendance tab.
Please note, this feature is only for same-day absences; for any extended or future absences, please continue to complete and submit the request for exceptional absence. We will also continue to use the same day absence google form. If you need to change an unapproved absence request, you will need to delete it and create a new one, as editing is not possible. Once an absence is approved, it cannot be deleted through the app, so you will need to contact the school for any further modifications

Logo jumper
Logo cardigan
Logo fleece
Logo waterproof jacket
Logo PE tshirt
Logo polo shirts
Junior PE black quarter zip top
Ties
Red PE shorts
Please do not donate, shirts, or grey uniform items; we have very limited storage space and we can’t store those items currently. We will let you know when we are able to accept these items again.
Thank you so much for supporting the second hand uniform sale on Friday. We are delighted that good quality school uniform can be reused and help families.
Going forward, we need to reduce the uniform service that we offer unfortunately. We will no longer be taking uniform email requests for the foreseeable future. The uniform service has expanded immensely with donations and requests over the past year. Whilst it has been absolutely wonderful to offer this service to the school community; sadly, we don't have the volunteers to sustain the huge amount of time this service requires.
However, we are very happy to still offer a termly uniform sale, where we'll have plenty of uniform on offer to stock up for the term ahead.
Please leave donations at either the Infants’ or Junior’s office.
We hope you understand the decision we've had to take, and we thank you, as always, for your continued support.
