Cheam Common Infants' Academy: Balmoral Road, Worcester Park, KT4 8SS
Email: ccioffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk https://www.cheamcommoninfants.com/
Another busy week, and I'm immensely proud of every pupil here at Cheam Common Infants, and of the staff who support them on their learning journey.
On Monday, we welcomed an experienced team of Challenge Partner Reviewers into school who stayed with us until Wednesday. The purpose of these reviews is to work alongside the school leadership team to celebrate our successes and suggest areas for improvement. Although the process is tiring, the benefits are numerous, and I am excited to build on their suggestions. The full report will be available in a couple of weeks to share widely, but in the meantime, I'm delighted to share that Phonics, Maths, and Oracy were identified as real strengths. What struck the team the most, however, was the palpable joy of learning they witnessed in every classroom.
It was wonderful to lead the EAL workshop on Friday morning—the slides are attached in the Parent Workshop section below. With 44% of our children speaking English as an additional language and over 37 languages spoken across our school community, cultural diversity is a vital and celebrated part of our daily curriculum and school life. Our diversity display is probably the most popular in the whole school; it features QR codes that link to videos of children speaking in their home languages. We warmly encourage you to send in photos of your children celebrating any traditional events.
Upcoming Cultural Celebrations
We are aware that the Lunar New Year falls during the half term break. To celebrate, we invite anyone marking this festival to come to school in traditional clothing on Friday, 13th February. We also know that Ramadan begins during half term. We will wait to confirm the date for Eid al-Fitr, which we anticipate will be either Thursday, 19th or Friday, 20th March.

Just a gentle reminder that universal breakfast club runs from 8.10-8.40 am at Cheam Common Infants. The Office reception area gate opens at 8.10 am and children are welcomed in through this entrance until 8.30am. At 8.30 am the main entrance gates on Kingsmead Road and the Nursery Gate on Balmoral Road open. These close at 8.40am so children can start their phonics lessons at 8.45am. This is different from the gates at the Junior School as their day runs from 8.45am to 3.15pm so their morning gates close at 8.45am.
A reminder that, although Sutton Safe Streets are in place on Kingsmead Avenue, the road is still open to those with a permit. We have seen an increase in children cycling on the road, or families walking up and down the road, and not noticing cars (which can be incredibly quiet now).
Please ensure that your children are being safe on the roads when travelling to and from school.
We have regretfully been sent some photos of cars parking across our neighbour's driveways again! We urge you to be considerate when parking. We have been sent the photograph of the car and as you can imagine the neighbours are upset about not being able to enter their own private driveways. If there was an emergency and someone needed to leave their drive as a matter of urgency the owner of the driveway is well within their rights to call the Police. According to the Highway Code (Rule 243) it is generally illegal to park in front of a driveway in the UK, especially if it blocks the entrance or a dropped kerb, as this prevents property access and use for mobility vehicles. It can lead to a potential Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) from the local council or by the police for obstruction if it impedes emergency services.
Please allow enough time when collecting your child to park appropriately.
The Year Two team are looking forward to taking the children to Brooklands on Wednesday 4th February (Owls and Kestrels) and Thursday 5th February (Eagles and Falcons) As historians, Y2 are learning about changes to transportation and this trip will allow them to explore the rich collection of bicycles, cars and aircraft that the museum holds. We will also be participating in a ‘Peg racer’ workshop and anticipate that this trip will engage and inspire our children. Please visit arbor to pay for this trip and complete the google form indicating if you would like your child to have a school packed lunch. Google Form - Year 2 trip
Please email cciwac@leoacademytrust.co.uk or phone 07739360621.
If you are emailing in with a message about your child, please include their name and class (ideally in the subject line). Collectively, this will save our office staff a huge amount of time.
It would be appreciated if all children's belongings were labelled clearly with their name, especially jumpers, coats and water bottles. We have a lot of unnamed items in our lost property cupboard already.
If you would like to explore ways that our Family Support Worker could support your family, please complete this Google Form.
Our next theme day will be on 12th February when we celebrate Pancake Day. I can't wait to see what they produce then!
Nursery
This week in Nursery we have been enjoying our story Don’t Wake Up, Tiger! 🐯 The children have loved celebrating Tiger’s birthday by making playdough cupcakes and tasty treats, drawing pictures of tigers, and creating tiger-pattern collages. We also explored different art techniques with balloon painting. We learned about floating and sinking by experimenting with objects in the water tray, and practised blowing bubbles, watching how they float gently through the air. A busy and fun-filled week of creativity and curiosity!
Reception
Reception have been learning the story of Astro Girl this week! They enjoyed drawing the main character Astrid and re-telling the story during our Tales Toolkit lessons. In addition to Astrid, Reception have also learnt about some famous astronauts and events such as Neil Armstrong and The Race for Space. In Maths, the children have been learning different ways to make 5. They enjoyed singing 5 Little Speckled Frogs and counting the number of frogs on the log and in the pool then combining them to make 5.
Mrs Woods and the EYFS Team
It has been another incredibly busy and productive week of learning in Year 1! In English, the children successfully applied their knowledge of the suffix -ing to write wonderful sentences describing the adventures of the Lonely Beast, while in Maths, they mastered subtraction using "first, then, now" stories.
Our Geography lessons took us on a virtual trip via Nearpod to explore the contrasting climates of Jamaica and the Arctic, sparking some fantastic discussions about global weather patterns. Creative energy was high in Art as the children began designing and printing with their custom foam tiles, a project we look forward to finishing next week. Finally, our Science investigators explored the sense of touch, showing great skill in using descriptive vocabulary to explain how different materials, like rough sandpaper, feel to the touch.
Mrs MP and the Year 1 Team
This week, Year 2 has been buzzing with creativity and innovation!
We delved into the life of George Stephenson, exploring his groundbreaking inventions and their transformative impact on travel. The children researched diligently using Thinglink and crafted captivating accounts, showcasing their understanding of the significance of this historical figure.
Transforming into "Inventors' Assistants" to the beloved Wallace and Gromit, students embraced their inner innovators. They generated ingenious inventions, carefully considered material selection based on specific properties, and confidently articulated their design choices.
Our budding engineers brought their car designs to life with meticulous care and attention to detail. The anticipation is building as we prepare to test these fantastic creations next week!
In mathematics, we've been exploring the 5x tables. Children demonstrated their knowledge of the 5x tables in different ways and explored the relationship between multiples of 5 and multiples of 10.
This week saw a thrilling poetry competition! We explored the whimsical world of nonsense poems and crafted our own imaginative kenning poems. The winning poem will be celebrated as our "Poem of the Week" next week and proudly performed in assembly by the entire year group.
What an inspiring week it has been! We can't wait to see what adventures await us next!
Mrs Harris and the Year 2 Team
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
We will share any photos of children and their birthday books here every week!

Communication
To help us assist you more efficiently when you email the school office, we kindly request that you include your child's class along with their name in your correspondence.
While we know all our students very well, having the class information readily available helps us to quickly identify your child and address your queries without any delay or guesswork.
For example, please consider writing: "Regarding [Child's Full Name], [Class, e.g., Year R - Squirrels]" in the subject line or at the beginning of your email.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated and will help us continue to provide the best possible support to you and your children.
Thank you for your understanding.
Moving address
If you have moved address, it is imperative that you inform the school office as soon as you have moved. It is a requirement that the school has up to date details particularly in case of an emergency.
Please email the school office ccioffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk if your details need updating. Alternatively you can update them using the Arbor App.
They are also available to complete on our website using the parent tab.
We do not authorise holidays during term time. If your child is going to be off school due to an exceptional circumstance, then please complete this form:
You can also log same-day absences for your children directly through the Parent Portal or Arbor App. Simply navigate to the Attendance section, click "Log Absence," and fill in the details. You can adjust the start and end times if it is not a full-day absence. Once submitted, school staff will review and either approve or reject the request. You will see approved absences in the Attendance tab.
Please note, this feature is only for same-day absences; for any extended or future absences, please continue to complete and submit the request for exceptional absence. We will also continue to use the same day absence google form. If you need to change an unapproved absence request, you will need to delete it and create a new one, as editing is not possible. Once an absence is approved, it cannot be deleted through the app, so you will need to contact the school for any further modifications

Logo waterproof jacket
Logo PE tshirt
Logo polo shirts
Junior PE black quarter zip top
Ties
Red PE shorts
Please do not donate, shirts, or grey uniform items; we have very limited storage space and we can’t store those items currently. We will let you know when we are able to accept these items again.
Thank you so much for supporting the second hand uniform sale on Friday. We are delighted that good quality school uniform can be reused and help families.
Going forward, we need to reduce the uniform service that we offer unfortunately. We will no longer be taking uniform email requests for the foreseeable future. The uniform service has expanded immensely with donations and requests over the past year. Whilst it has been absolutely wonderful to offer this service to the school community; sadly, we don't have the volunteers to sustain the huge amount of time this service requires.
However, we are very happy to still offer a termly uniform sale, where we'll have plenty of uniform on offer to stock up for the term ahead.
Please leave donations at either the Infants’ or Junior’s office.
We hope you understand the decision we've had to take, and we thank you, as always, for your continued support.
