Cheam Common Infants' Academy: Balmoral Road, Worcester Park, KT4 8SS

The Year 2 children had a wonderful time at Wisley this week. A huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered; your support is invaluable. With high temperatures predicted for Monday and Tuesday, children have the option to wear their PE kits to school. While the school summer dress is lightweight, the grey pinafore dresses and trousers are made of much thicker material and the PE uniform offers a cooler option. A polite reminder that the PE kit consists of red shorts and a white t-shirt. Black shorts are not part of the uniform. Children can also choose to wear their polo shirts on Monday and Tuesday, unbuttoned for comfort. As the school will be warm, there is no need for children to wear vests under their polo shirts, I can assure you that they will not be cold.
Mr Honeysett, our school PE coach has been busy arranging our Sports Day. This will be held at the Scout hut at the bottom of Balmoral Road. The Year 1 sports day will start at 9am and end at 10.10am. The Year 2 sports day will start at 10.30am and end at 11.40am and the Reception sports day will start at 1.20pm and end at 2.40pm. The scouts have kindly offered to leave their gazebos up which will offer shade from the sun or potentially, looking at the forecast, a light shower of rain! I am very pleased that the temperature is dropping on Wednesday which will make it a much more comfortable affair. Another huge thank you to 'The Friends of Cheam Common' who will be providing refreshments for the children at the event.
I would like to remind you that children should not play on the school playground equipment after school. Any accidents occurring outside school hours are not covered by our insurance. Our staff work hard to tidy the outside area at the end of each day, storing equipment safely and covering the sandpit to deter foxes. It is disheartening for them to see these efforts undermined. We have also noticed an increase in litter dropped by children at the end of the day. While I understand children may be hungry, please ensure all snack wrappers are placed in a bin or taken home.
Unfortunately, I've noticed on three separate occasions that a dog owner has been irresponsible, leaving dog mess outside the school near our entrance. It's truly baffling that anyone would allow their dog to do this outside a school. Each time, I've asked Mr. Chalke to clean the pavement to prevent any of your children from stepping in it. If you drop your children off to school early, please be aware of this issue. It can be quite upsetting for children to have their shoes removed and cleaned, or even their clothes if staff haven't noticed in time and they've sat with their legs crossed on the carpet Meanwhile I will remain on dog poop watch!
If you are able to attend don't forget the Transition meetings run by the Year Leads Mrs MP (Year 1) and Mrs Harris (Year 2) this week. Slides will be sent out to everyone following the meetings and we will be having further curriculum meetings in September if you are unable to make it this time.
Congratulations to our Maths week poster competition winners. Miss King and I were thrilled with the number of entries but it did make it extremely difficult to choose the winners! We love the way the children embrace learning at Cheam Common Infants'.

Edurio Survey 2025
"Could you share more detailed about what children are learning and share educational resources. We would like to know more about the curriculum and how to better support our children."
We will be holding a range of workshops over the coming months and the next academic year and comments within the survey have given us a range of subject focuses for these. We will be starting with 'Transition' workshops this term. These will be held in the school hall.

These workshops are designed to provide information and practical suggestions on how to support our children to make a smooth transition into their new year group in September.
Please see an incredibly exciting update from our Friends of Cheam Common group, who have raised such an amazing amount of money that they can announce their new project - our playground!
We would like to state how grateful we are to the parents that constantly support this school, and who are so humble, kind and forward-thinking in their approach at making Cheam Common the best it can be.
If you would like to help this group out, you could give up an hour of your time to help out at our Summer Fair on Saturday 12th July. You can view details of how to do this here.

As part of our history topic, ‘Tudor Kings and Queens’, we have organised an educational visit to Nonsuch Park! The children will be given an opportunity to visit the grounds and gardens of Nonsuch Mansion.
Nonsuch Palace was a Tudor royal palace, built by Henry VIII; it stood from 1538 to 1682–83. Its site lies in what is now Nonsuch Park. We will explore the gardens and grounds, play some games in the park and enjoy a picnic before returning to school.
Please complete and return this Google Form, giving permission for your child to attend and indicating if you would like to order a school packed lunch or if you will provide one from home.
We are pleased to announce the arrival of the new Cheam Common half-zip black PE top at the uniform shop.
These stylish tops provide a comfortable and smart alternative to sweatshirts and cardigans on PE days, mirroring the popular junior design.
Infants in Reception to Year 2 can now purchase tops with a standard Cheam Common logo. Older children's tops with the CCJ logo will remain available until current stock is sold.
This top is optional (not a uniform requirement) but many parents have praised the junior version, so we are pleased to offer this popular choice!
These can be purchased at SchoolWearInc - also on Worcester Park High Street,
We are excited to announce that you can now log same-day absences for your children directly through the Parent Portal or Arbor App. Simply navigate to the Attendance section, click "Log Absence," and fill in the details. You can adjust the start and end times if it is not a full-day absence. Once submitted, school staff will review and either approve or reject the request. You will see approved absences in the Attendance tab.
Please note, this feature is only for same-day absences; for any extended or future absences, please continue to complete and submit the request for exceptional absence. We will also continue to use the same day absence google form. If you need to change an unapproved absence request, you will need to delete it and create a new one, as editing is not possible. Once an absence is approved, it cannot be deleted through the app, so you will need to contact the school for any further modifications.
This new reporting method will be used alongside our other established reporting procedures
Request for Exceptional Absence form in advance for future appointments and exception absence.
Cheam Common Infants' Absence Form for sickness and same day medical appointments.

This week Nursery read Stardust and the Bus is For Us. They made lots of crafts and paintings themed by stars. They also looked at the painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and made their own paintings in the same style. They also made Oyster cards.
Reception continued their learning about the story Handa’s Surprise. They wrote about the problems in the story when the animals took the fruit. They also sequenced the events in the story and made story maps. Thanks to a donation of tube rolls from a kind Year 1 family, we made elephant crafts!
Year One has had a really enjoyable week of learning. They have absolutely loved writing their own poems using rhyming words from the inspiration of ‘Betsy Buglove Saves the Bees.’ They performed a class poem in groups in CCJ radio studio, which they found incredibly exciting. In Maths they have been using Gattengo charts, to recap counting forwards and backwards to 100 by crossing the tens boundary.
In History the children labelled a tudor house and wrote some very good sentences about Tudor homes and how rich and poor people lived. They enjoyed learning about fruits in both Science and D.T how they grow and where they are from.
This week, Year 2 had a brilliant trip to RHS Wisley! It was the perfect opportunity to see first hand how plants grow and adapt to different climates, bringing our classroom learning to life.
The children were absolutely thrilled when they spotted tiny ducklings playing on the lily pads at the very start of the day. They enthusiastically tackled an "I spy" challenge as we strolled through the beautiful gardens on our way to the glasshouse. Inside, the heat and humidity were a surprise to some, but they loved exploring the cacti and the amazing, unique flowers of the lush tropical plants. We even managed to find a bunch of bananas growing high up!
After our glasshouse adventure, we enjoyed a relaxed picnic and a bit of a runaround under the trees. We had to be extra careful not to share our sandwiches with the resident geese! Once refuelled, we headed up the hill to the Hilltop learning studios. Here, we discovered how different seeds are used for food and medicinal purposes. Outside the studio, we explored a variety of microhabitats like log piles, ponds, and tall grasses. We were lucky enough to spot crickets, dragonflies, butterflies, and lots of ladybirds!
The Year 2 team wants to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who generously gave their time to join us on this trip. Your support made the day even more special, and it was wonderful to share such an enjoyable experience with the children.
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
Happy birthday! Thank you so much for your book donation.

Partners including CAMHS, Sutton Local Authority, Education and the Voluntary Community Sector are working with parents/carers to design a pilot to provide early support to families that may have concerns that may be related to Autism or ADHD.
The pilot will aim to provide early support to children and young people with or
without a formal diagnosis.
To make sure this pilot service truly meets the needs of families in Sutton, we would be extremely grateful if you could complete the following short survey:
https://forms.office.com/e/swsnFC9jmK
Your feedback will help to:
Identify gaps in support experienced by parent/carers, ensure that the pilot service is informed by parent/carers and that families receive the help that they need, and improve coordination between services.
The survey should take approximately 15-20 mins to complete; it is open until 23rd June 2025.
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Diana Salgado, Clinial Service Lead for the Leads Based Model team, through the email:

Help Keep Young People Safe in Our Community!
Please share:
We’re looking for everyday people—shop owners, neighbours, volunteers, parents—who care about young people’s safety and want to make a difference.
What’s a Community Guardian?
A community guardian is a trusted adult who helps look out for young people in the places they spend time—like parks, shops, schools, online spaces, and local neighbourhoods.
You don’t need to be an expert—just someone who’s observant, approachable, and willing to help if something doesn’t feel right.
As a Community Guardian, You Might:
Keep an eye out for signs that a young person might need help
Offer a safe place, like your business or community space, if someone feels unsafe
Build positive relationships with local young people
Help raise awareness about keeping young people safe
Why It Matters
Sometimes, risks to young people happen outside the home. That’s where community guardians come in—offering support and safety in the spaces where young people hang out every day.
Interested in Getting Involved?
We're planning a short training session and will support however you need to help you feel confident. Whether you want to actively participate or just learn more, we’d love to hear from you.
