Pupil Voice trip to RHS Wisley
On Tuesday, some of our Eco Warriors and school council members joined our forest school teacher and Mrs Perschky on a trip to RHS Wisley. They participated in workshops in the morning looking at three different habitats as well as planting cornflower seeds. The children had a wonderful day and were thoroughly engaged. Thank you to Mrs Perschky and Miss Birkett for organising.
Reception and Key Stage 1 Sports Day
On Thursday we had our Key Stage One and Reception Sports day. The sun was shining down on us as the children competed, in their classes, in eight events where they were able to demonstrate a range of skills from steady hands in the 'egg and spoon' race, to throwing in the javelin and running in the sprint. All children had a wonderful time and showed amazing sportsmanship skills. We are very proud of them all.
This year we collected points from several of the events. The results are as follow
Reception: Foxes won the Bean Bag throw, Badgers won the Egg and Spoon, Squirrels won the javelin and Hedgehogs won the obstacle event.
Year 1: Wrens won the Egg and Spoon, Robins won the javelin, Finches won the bunny hoops and Sparrows won the obstacle event.
Year 2: Owls won the javelin, Falcons won the bunny hoops, Eagles won the bean bag throw and Kestrels won the obstacle event.
A huge thank you to Mrs Champness, Mr Sanders and Mrs Brady for all their hard work in organising and setting up the event. Thank you to the Year 6 pupils for their help too as well as our parent helpers. A massive thank you to Cheam Common Friends for providing refreshments.
As this week is National Sports Week, please see 10 ways in which you can promote physical well being.
Ahoy Mateys!
Staying with an 'under the sea' theme, Nursery have continued to enjoy exploring ocean life. They have loved being pirates as well as investigating the creatures which live in the sea.
They have also been concentrating on developing their fine motor skills this week with letter formation practice, giving toilet roll people hair cuts as well as using the chrome pads to trace letters and have a go at forming their own!
Being creative, they have created cheerio starfish as well as making under the sea artwork. As the sun was out this week, they have also been following instructions and making ice creams for each other using pom poms, buttons and pieces of paper.
As authors, they have used 'Tales toolkit' to help them write their own stories.
Well done!
In Reception this week we have read 'Everywhere Bear' and created descriptions of the lost bear for missing posters. We have been learning how to stay safe and how to get help if we ever become lost or separated from our grown ups.
In maths we have been comparing quantities using the language of more and fewer.
Can you show your child two different amounts and see if they can tell you which has more and fewer?
In art, the children have painted beautiful bears. We also had the opportunity to make crayon rubbings of natural materials with Miss Maclean from CCJ.
In Jigsaw we were reflecting on how we have changed since we were babies. The children loved trying to match the teachers to their baby pictures!!
Wow, what a busy and exciting week we have had!
The children absolutely loved taking part in Sports Day. They were very excited to take part in all the different activities and enjoyed a biscuit as a treat. We had the most wonderful day at Hampton Court on Friday. The children thoroughly enjoyed going on a bus. Walking around Hampton Court, the children spotted lots of Tudor features and they loved roaming around the kitchens. Their favourite part of the day was the magic gardens, whizzing down the slides and playing in the sand and water was a highlight. What a fabulous day!
In English, the children have written a formal letter to the Queen from Claude and Sir Bobblysock. They have learnt how to lay out a letter and use paragraphs. The children also used questions to make it very interesting. We were very proud of them.
In Mathematics, the children have learnt to tell the time to o’clock and half past the hour. They have really enjoyed learning about the minute and hour hand, making the time and writing the time. The children have practically made the times using individual clocks and are growing in confidence to tell the time.
Can you ask your child - what time is it? Telling the time to o’clock and half past the hour.
In science, the children enjoyed learning about fruits. They have learnt some fruits have stones and seeds and wrote about it.
The children loved D.T this week as they chopped and cut a variety of vegetables. They were very sensible using sharp knives and they really enjoyed eating the salad they had made.
Can you ask your child what vegetables they chopped and grated for their salad?
We really have had a very busy week with lots of learning.
Year 2 have had another great week of learning.
In computing, they have been using Canva to create their own slide deck, learning how to insert images and change the background design.
In English they identified the features of a newspaper report in preparation of writing their own newspaper report about The Great Fire of London.
Can you ask them to tell you three features of a newspaper report?
As historians, they learnt and correctly sequenced the different events during The Great Fire of London, using Flipgrid to help them demonstrate their knowledge.
As mathematicians, they began investigating fractions of shapes. Showing they could use both manipulatives as well as picture representations to show halves, quarters and more!
Ask them if they can show you half of a circle.
As scientists, using onions and garlic, they looked at different parts of bulbs.
Can they name you any parts of a bulb?
Birthdays - polite reminder
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
If you do bring in treats, we will NOT hand them out. We expect you and your child to hand them out so you can check if parents are happy for their child to receive the treat.
Happy Birthday to Alex. Thank you for donating 'A nest is noisy' to our library.
Happy birthday to all our pupils who have celebrated a birthday this week.
Well done to Madeleine who achieved her orange badge for Gymnastics at Tolworth gymnastics school. A great achievement - well done!
If you would like to inform us of any achievements your child has completed outside of school, please complete this FORM
Isabelle was inspired by the London topic to create a model of Tower Bridge with a working drawbridge!
She used old cereal boxes and made the turrets with square based and triangular based pyramids.
Amazing!
Well done Harriet in Kestrels for this fantastic model of the Great Fire of London including lights! What a lot of effort has gone into it.
Amazing!
Well done to Alfie in Finches who has taken great care of the seed he planted at Forest school. Using his knowledge of what a plant needs to grow, this plant is now over 2m tall! Great job.
Well done to Jacob in Owls who has painted this fantastic picture of the Tower of London. I know Year 2 are very excited to visit it next week.
Well done to Luna in Kestrels who, inspired by learning all about the Great Fire of London, completed this poem.
Great work!

Children and young people are bound to spend lots more time on devices since Covid. DON’T FEEL BAD – lots will be schoolwork or healthy ways of catching up with friends or having fun. There are many ways to keep them safe, healthy and happy.
Read these six top tips to help your children to keep safe online.
There are many different views about physical chastisement, but it is widely accepted there are much more effective ways to teach children right from wrong.
As a local authority, Sutton has seen a number of children coming to the attention of police and social care due to the use of physical chastisement and as such has worked with other local authorities on an initiative to reduce this number.
In line with this initiative, we agree that anything that causes harm to a child is unacceptable.
As a school, we have a duty to report incidents of suspected or confirmed physical chastisement to social care and the police and this can be with ot without visible bruising, grazes, scratches, minor swelling, cuts as well as stress injuries from prolonged standing, position holding as these are banned by law in the United Kingdom.
Smacking or chastising that does not leave a mark is now illegal in Wales and Scotland, and there is currently pressure being placed on the Government to make it illegal in England and Northern Ireland too. It is therefore important to understand that even if a child has been smacked but no injuries are visible, social care or the police may still choose to take further action.
If you would like support on how to manage your child’s behaviour at home, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to help.

Surrey County Council encourages residents to foster
Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that can transform the lives of both the children being fostered and the foster carers themselves. Children who enter the care system have often experienced trauma and instability in their lives, and a caring, stable foster family can make a significant difference in their wellbeing and development.
Nationally, there are currently over 70,000 children living with foster families in the UK. However, there is still a significant shortage of foster carers, with around 9,265 new foster families needed in the next year alone. In Surrey, there are over 1,000 children in care and Surrey County Council have just under 400 foster families.
Foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fostering. Whether you are single or married, young or old, own your own home or rent, you can still become a foster carer. The most important thing is a willingness to provide a safe and loving home for a child in need.
This is the message that Surrey County Council is promoting in national recruitment film ‘Any of Us’. The short film has been jointly funded by over 80 councils across England and aims to raise awareness about fostering, particularly among those people who may not have previously considered themselves suited to fostering. The film looks at the potential of three people from different backgrounds to become foster carers, and the potential of children they care for to grow and thrive. ‘Any of Us’ will be available to watch from 26 September.
If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that first step and find out more. The more people who consider fostering, the greater the chance of finding loving, stable homes for children in Surrey who desperately need them.
You can contact Surrey County Council Fostering Service on 0800 096 9626, via email at fostering.recruitment@surreycc.gov.uk or by visiting the website; www.surreycc.gov.uk/fostering
You can watch ‘Any of Us’ via Any of Us - YouTube and connect with the Fostering Service on social media via @surreyfostering
