Many of you may have noticed the police presence that we have had outside of school for the past couple of days, please be reassured that they are here to improve the safety for all of our children. In response to several concerns that parents and neighbours have had regarding the traffic around school including double parking, parking on private driveways and/or across driveways the police will be monitoring this over the next few weeks. Their reports will be factored into future consultations regarding traffic control around the school.
Summer seems to have arrived early this year - for this week at least, but looking ahead the warmer weather is set to continue. A few parents have asked what our policy is regarding sunscreen. We take sun safety very seriously at Cheam Common so it is good to see so many of the children bringing in sun hats and water bottles. We monitor the children closely to ensure that they drink enough water and have enough shade whilst playing outside. Unfortunately we are not able to apply sunscreen to all of the children and so would encourage the use of sunscreens that are longer lasting that you apply in the mornings before the children come to school. When my children were younger I was introduced to 'Riemann P20' which is sweat resistant, water resistant and lasts up to 10 hours. This gave me peace of mind for those hot days when they were in school. I know that Boots Soltan and Calypso also produce these types of sunscreen.
The Reception children enjoyed the visit from the farm on Wednesday and it was great to hear the different animal noises drifting across the playground. Some of the children have commented that it was "their best school day ever" and this is testament to the importance of 'hands on learning' which we embrace at Cheam Common. Year One will be building on and embedding their scientific learning about animals at Hobbledown next week and Year Two recently visited the Forest school to support their learning about plants. They will continue to further develop this when they visit Wisley later on in the term.
The universal breakfast club seems to be a popular choice for many and we are pleased that we can support our families with child care especially those that are now able to catch the 8.27am train rather that the 8.57am. However this is a gentle reminder that this club starts at 8.10am. Some families are still opting for our paid wrap around care which includes child care from 7.30 to 8.10 and includes a substantial breakfast. The food that is being offered as part of the government universal breakfast club is more of a breakfast snack. The menu for this is on the website but as a reminder Monday is pancake, Tuesday and Thursday a piece of fruit, Wednesday a crumpet and Friday a blueberry muffin. There are gluten, dairy and egg free options available.
Mrs Harris, as History lead, one of her many roles, has worked hard to put together a range of fun activities for the children to do to commemorate VE Day. As previously mentioned we will be celebrating this on Friday next week not Thursday so that the Year One children can be part of the celebrations.
Deaf Awareness Week in 2025 takes place from May 5th to May 11th. The theme for Deaf Awareness Week 2025 is "Beyond Silence," encouraging greater understanding and action towards inclusion. Mrs Tabrett will be visiting several of the classes over the course of next week whilst they are practising their poems of the week showing them how these poems can be translated into sign language.
I hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend - see you on Tuesday.
Mrs Hughes
We are excited to be celebrating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, on Friday 9th May.
Children will be completing themed activities in class in the morning, then coming outside for a Street Party in the afternoon. They will be taking part in games from the wartime era, and learning all about why VE Day is celebrated.
If you would like to attend the local Royal British Legion event celebrating this event, it is taking place on Sunday 11th May at 12pm, starting at the Worcester Park War Memorial.
Thursday 8th May
We are excited to announce that Year 1 will be going on an educational visit to Hobbledown. As Scientists, we have been learning all about animals and classifying their features. Hobbledown will be a wonderful experience for them to explore a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. It will allow them to enrich their scientific vocabulary as they discuss the animals and see them first hand. We will also be participating in an ‘Interactive Animal Experience’ consisting of a meet-and-greet session with a range of animals. This will be run by a qualified animal keeper, who will discuss habitats, adaptations, identification and features with the children.
On Thursday 8th May the whole year group will visit Hobbledown. We will leave school by coach at 9.00 a.m. Please ensure that your child arrives at school promptly at 8.30am. We will return to school at 3.00pm. If we are delayed in getting back, an email will be sent out from the school office to parents.
If your child has grapes as a snack, could you ensure that these are cut into halves or quarters so that your child is able to eat them safely.
There is a huge amount of lost property at the moment. This will be displayed in the playground at pick up and drop off when the weather is good enough. Please ensure children's uniforms are named.
Click on the links below to read our curriculum newsletters. On these, you can find out the topics that your children will be learning about, as well as information about home learning, PE days and general reminders for their year group.
Nursery have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk this week! They planted runner beans and made beanstalks! They have also explored activities to help them use one of their special words in NELI “splash”.
Reception were visited by Mill Cottage Farm this week! They had an amazing time! We have also been working hard in maths and made our own number tracks to play our own number track board games!
Year 1 had a busy week of learning, they have amazed us with their wonderful writing in English. They wrote super sentences describing the beginning of the story. In Maths, the children have learnt about money and the value of coins e.g 5p has the value of 5 one pennies. Some children have found it difficult making amounts using coins 16p is made of 10p, 5p and 1p please play shops at home with real coins.
In Science, the children confidently labelled the parts of the plant and enjoyed observing real plants.
In Geography, the children really enjoyed exploring the map of the UK and labelling the four countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In Art, the children loved drawing flora and fauna and created some wonderful artwork. Enjoy the bank holiday weekend!
This week, Year 2 have been learning how to find fractions of amounts and how to write these fractions correctly. We have explored what numerators and denominators represent the children then worked practically and in our journals to demonstrate their understanding.
In English, the children wrote diary entries from the perspective of George from ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. Inspired by Dahl, they used adventurous adjectives and literacy techniques such as alliteration and repetition to write colourful accounts of how the medicine was created and the impact on George’s grumpy Grandma.
What fun we have had writing in the style of Roald Dahl!
In Science, we began our investigation into the conditions required for seeds to germinate and thrive. The children ‘worked scientifically’ to ensure that only the variable condition was changed and all other variables remained consistent. Some seeds were planted without sunlight, some without warmth, some without water, some without soil and some with water, warmth, soil and sunlight. We will be closely observing the progress of the seeds in the coming weeks to see if our predictions are correct.
We have begun to learn about VE day and the impact that rationing had on children’s lives in Britain. We are enjoying learning through song, poems and art and cannot wait for our picnic next Friday!
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
Happy birthday! Thank you for your book donation.
