We’re thrilled to share the Jam Coding trophy winners at Cheam Common Infants Academy for the Spring Term:
Mark M (Sparrows) and Cody T (Wrens)
Their incredible achievements are a fantastic opportunity to spark inspiration and celebrate excellence in coding and computing across your school.
We warmly encourage you to recognise these accomplishments—whether in assemblies, classroom discussions, or any creative celebration that boosts school spirit and motivates all students to continue their digital literacy journey with Jam Coding in our clubs.
Thank you for your ongoing support and for fostering such a positive environment for our clubs to thrive!
Welcome back. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Easter break making the most of the sunny weather that we had at the beginning of the holiday. I can't believe that it is the Summer Term already - how quickly the time seems to go. Although the weather was a little cooler this week it is set to be a warm one next week so please remember to ensure that your children bring in water and sun hats and have had sun cream applied, especially on Wednesday and Thursday when it is set to sizzle! It was lovely to welcome the children back on Tuesday they all seem to have grown over the holiday. Some of the children are coming back to new flooring in their classrooms as we are moving towards a more natural and calm colour scheme in school. Known as the therapeutic classroom approach it has been proven to promote a calmer environment in which your children will be able to learn and thrive. This will be an ongoing project that will continue over the course of the term and into September. Miss Alder and Miss Tunney are already commenting on how calm their classrooms feel. All of the Reception classes now have an outside area that they can access throughout the day during their active learning time thanks to the generosity of the Friends who provided the funds to build the fences. I am sure they will be making the most of these next week! I am very excited to be embarking on our next project with the Friends who have offered to support us to create our 'dream playground.' I have been speaking to several 'playground designers' and am looking forward to seeing their design boards. Watch this space.
We have an exciting term of learning ahead of us which includes school trips to Wisley, Hobbledown , Nonsuch Palace/Park and this week the Reception children are expecting a visit from Mill Farm. Please read the linked curriculum newsletters to find out what your children are learning about in school and how you can support them with their learning at home.
Thank you to everyone who filled in the parent Edurio survey, I appreciate that there were a lot of questions to answer! Your opinions are very important to us and I will be passing on your words of support to all of the staff and equally taking on board and actioning some of your suggestions as to how we can improve the school to make Cheam Common Infants' even better!
I hope you all have a lovely weekend
Mrs Hughes
Wednesday 30th April
We are delighted to inform you that we have arranged an educational visit from Mill Cottage Farm Experience on Wednesday 30th April. This visit forms part of our unit of learning ‘From Ant to Elephant’ and provides the children with a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn about a wide range of farm animals.
The farm will be visiting us for the day based in the CCJ grounds. Reception classes will take turns to visit the farm and will be accompanied by their class teacher and additional adults.
We are very keen for this visit to take place and therefore request a voluntary contribution of £6.00 per pupil to be paid via Arbor before Monday 21st April. Please note that refunds cannot be made if your child is absent on the day. If insufficient voluntary contributions are received this visit might have to be cancelled. However if you have difficulty in affording the above amount, please come to see us privately either at the classroom door or speak to the office staff.
Thursday 8th May
We are excited to announce that Year 1 will be going on an educational visit to Hobbledown. As Scientists, we have been learning all about animals and classifying their features. Hobbledown will be a wonderful experience for them to explore a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. It will allow them to enrich their scientific vocabulary as they discuss the animals and see them first hand. We will also be participating in an ‘Interactive Animal Experience’ consisting of a meet-and-greet session with a range of animals. This will be run by a qualified animal keeper, who will discuss habitats, adaptations, identification and features with the children.
On Thursday 8th May the whole year group will visit Hobbledown. We will leave school by coach at 9.00 a.m. Please ensure that your child arrives at school promptly at 8.30am. We will return to school at 3.00 pm. If we are delayed in getting back, an email will be sent out from the school office to parents.
If your child has grapes as a snack, could you ensure that these are cut into halves or quarters so that your child is able to eat them safely.
There is a huge amount of lost property at the moment. This will be displayed in the playground at pick up and drop off when the weather is good enough. Please ensure children's uniforms are named.
Click on the links below to read our curriculum newsletters. On these, you can find out the topics that your children will be learning about, as well as information about home learning, PE days and general reminders for their year group.
Nursery have been learning about Spring and sharing their Easter holiday news. They painted and collaged spring flowers. They have also been practising their oracy skills using the Tales Toolkit toys and made paper birds nests, which was one of their key words and concepts in their NELI lessons.
Reception have been reading What the Ladybird Heard. They have made farm animals using different art techniques. They learnt about the job of a farmer and did some farm themed counting. The children then had great fun playing eye spy with farm animal pictures and writing sentences about them!
We have had a lovely first week back, full of lots of fun learning opportunities. In English we have begun our new story ‘Wild’ by Emily Hughs. The children have enjoyed writing a character description of Wild and used interesting adjectives to describe her.
In Maths the children have been estimating length and measuring objects with accuracy using rulers in cm. Also, the children have been skip counting in 2’s and 10’s please keep practising counting in 2’s.
In Science, the children have explored botanical gardens online and looked closely at a variety of house plants and garden plants.
The children enjoyed sorting pictures about town and countryside in Geography, through the story of ‘The town and Country mouse’ and identified human and physical features.
The children loved their Art learning about ‘Flora and Fauna’ . We were amazed with their fantastic drawing skills. What a busy four days!
This week, Year 2 unleashed their artistic talents, creating abstract drawings inspired by the iconic style of Kandinsky. The class delved into ‘Concentric Circles’ and ‘Colour Study VIII’, allowing us to understand how Kandinsky was inspired by his synesthesia, a fascinating condition where the vibrant hues of certain colours danced in his vision when he heard music.
In English, the children were utterly captivated as we began reading ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. We explored Dahl’s ingenious use of language to craft unforgettable characters and truly gripping tales.
In geography, we began our comparisons of two countries by using Google Earth to search for famous landmarks in London. We eagerly used Google Earth to pinpoint famous landmarks in London.
In Science, our new exploration of plants began with an investigation into the crucial role that bark plays in protecting trees in diverse environments. We thoroughly enjoyed using ‘Earth Hour’ to explore the grounds of CCI and CCJ. This hands-on experience enabled us to collect bark rubbings from various trees, allowing us to compare the fascinating differences in their textures.
Finally, in maths, we took our first steps into the world of fractions, confidently identifying halves, quarters, and thirds.
Well done, Year 2, for such a fantastic and enthusiastic start to the new term!
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
Happy birthday! Thank you for your book donation.
