Monday 16th to Friday 20th June 2025

What a hot week. The children have coped very well with the rising temperatures this week and we are ensuring that they are staying hydrated throughout the day. Please remember to send your child in with a sun hat, the temperatures are looking like they will drop a little next week but the forecast is still predicting sun. Perfect conditions for Year 2 and their trip to Wisley.
With sunny weather anticipated, we plan to take class photos outdoors on Monday. As previously communicated, Year 2 will have a traditional class photo, a fun photo, and an individual 'transition' photo. All of these will be available for purchase when you place your order.
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the parent who proposed the idea of a 'Heritage Day.' We have received an outpouring of positive feedback from both children and staff. It was truly inspiring to observe staff and children sharing their unique heritage stories with their peers. I was immensely proud of the children's engagement and respect shown towards their classmates. A group of Year 1 children I spoke with were not only able to articulate why they were not wearing their school uniform but also unanimously agreed that this is an event we should repeat.
Week 4 (June 23rd to June 27th) is shaping up to be a busy one! It's London Maths Week, so we will be promoting maths learning throughout the school. Miss King would like to remind everyone about the poster competition (more details can be found below). Year 2 will be visiting Wisley to consolidate their scientific learning about plants from their time in the Infant School, providing a strong foundation for their future learning in the Junior School. The Early Years team and I are excited to welcome our new Reception and Nursery parents to the school on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, both of these meetings start at 5.30pm. Finally, on Friday, Years 1 and 2 will enjoy a drama production of Oliver Twist - this will be in the hall at the Junior School. Amidst these activities, lessons will continue as usual, providing the consistent school routine many children and indeed staff require for self regulation.
Mrs Hughes
On Friday we celebrated our first Culture and Heritage Day. Children were invited to wear traditional dress that represented their culture, heritage or ancestry.
It was wonderful to see how the children embraced this opportunity to share their heritages with their peers. Some chose to wear clothes that represented their cultures and heritages whilst others brought in books, traditional food, flags, some even created Seesaw presentations that they shared with the class. It is important to us to recognise and celebrate our school's diverse range of cultures, and to give our children the voice to speak about their heritage with courage. We are so proud of all of our children for asking positive and curious questions throughout the day, and making one another feel welcome.
Edurio Survey 2025
"Could you share more detailed about what children are learning and share educational resources. We would like to know more about the curriculum and how to better support our children."
We will be holding a range of workshops over the coming months and the next academic year and comments within the survey have given us a range of subject focuses for these. We will be starting with 'Transition' workshops this term. These will be held in the school hall.

These workshops are designed to provide information and practical suggestions on how to support our children to make a smooth transition into their new year group in September.
Please see an incredibly exciting update from our Friends of Cheam Common group, who have raised such an amazing amount of money that they can announce their new project - our playground!
We would like to state how grateful we are to the parents that constantly support this school, and who are so humble, kind and forward-thinking in their approach at making Cheam Common the best it can be.
If you would like to help this group out, you could give up an hour of your time to help out at our Summer Fair on Saturday 12th July. You can view details of how to do this here.

Tuesday 24th and Thursday 26th June
To support our science and geography learning, we have arranged a fantastic trip to RHS Wisley for the Year 2 children next half term. On this trip, the children will have the chance to explore the beautiful gardens and the Glasshouse to develop their understanding of how plants are adapted to grow in different conditions and climates. The children will be given the opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt and create artworks using natural objects. We anticipate that this trip will provide the children with an educational and enjoyable experience with the freedom to be fully immersed in nature for the day.
On Tuesday 24th June Eagles and Falcons will be visiting the gardens. Mrs Harris will lead the trip, accompanied by Miss Stansbie. On Thursday 26th June, Owls and Kestrels will be visiting the gardens, led by Mrs Harris and accompanied by Miss King and Miss Jung. We will leave school by coach at 9.00am and we will return to school by 3.00pm.
Please complete this form by Tuesday 17th June to confirm your children’s participation in the trip. We have already contacted you to ask for parent volunteers. If you are available on this date and would like to offer your help, please indicate this on the form. We will then contact you to confirm your help.
The cost of this trip is £20.00 and payment should be made via Arbor by Tuesday 17th June.
We are excited to announce that you can now log same-day absences for your children directly through the Parent Portal or Arbor App. Simply navigate to the Attendance section, click "Log Absence," and fill in the details. You can adjust the start and end times if it is not a full-day absence. Once submitted, school staff will review and either approve or reject the request. You will see approved absences in the Attendance tab.
Please note, this feature is only for same-day absences; for any extended or future absences, please continue to complete and submit the request for exceptional absence. We will also continue to use the same day absence google form. If you need to change an unapproved absence request, you will need to delete it and create a new one, as editing is not possible. Once an absence is approved, it cannot be deleted through the app, so you will need to contact the school for any further modifications.
This new reporting method will be used alongside our other established reporting procedures
Request for Exceptional Absence form in advance for future appointments and exception absence.
Cheam Common Infants' Absence Form for sickness and same day medical appointments.
Between Monday 23rd and Friday 27th June, we will be celebrating Maths Week London.
All children are invited to take part in our LEO-wide competition about famous historical mathematicians. You can choose from either Ada Lovelace or Albert Einstein, and complete an activity about their life.
There are activities for all ages, from Nursery to Year 6.
<-- See the poster here for more information about Ada Lovelace.
See the poster here for more information about Albert Einstein. -->
Children in Nursery have been reading The Train Ride. They made pictures of trains using different shapes. They then made train tracks and had great fun creating imaginary journeys. Where would you like to go on a train journey?
Reception have been reading Handa’s surprise this week. We enjoyed fruit tasting and discussed which fruits we liked and why. We have also been on a number hunt and practised our number of the week:13!
It has been a very hot week for Year One. We are incredibly proud of all the children and for the progress they have made from the results of the assessments carried out this week. We were amazed with their spellings and reading common exception words and they have retained all the sticky knowledge of maths.
The children have particularly enjoyed D.T chopping and grating vegetables to make a salad which they enjoyed eating. We have loved looking at different types of fruit in Science, looking at where their seeds are and what they look like.
This week, Year 2 has been incredibly busy and creative! In English, they've been working hard as newspaper reporters, vividly describing the Great Fire of London. They focused on making their accounts both factual and dramatic, even adding quotes and captions to their wonderful illustrations.
In Design and Technology, they became engineers, investigating how to build stable structures that could withstand an earthquake. They discovered that wide bases make for much stronger buildings and had a blast working together on their designs.
Our Digital Leaders shone brightly in Computing, showcasing their brilliant Canva skills. They expertly guided their friends in creating eye-catching slides, experimenting with backgrounds, fonts, and images.
We've also begun our transition activities to help the children feel confident and excited about moving to CCJ in September. On Monday and Friday, they had a wonderful time exploring the CCJ playground, enjoying fun activities like parachute games, an obstacle course, I Spy, code breaking, and chalk art! They're already making themselves at home!
Well done to all those who have completed beautifully crafted homework linked to our learning about the Great Fire of London. It is wonderful to see the children so engaged in their learning!
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.

Partners including CAMHS, Sutton Local Authority, Education and the Voluntary Community Sector are working with parents/carers to design a pilot to provide early support to families that may have concerns that may be related to Autism or ADHD.
The pilot will aim to provide early support to children and young people with or
without a formal diagnosis.
To make sure this pilot service truly meets the needs of families in Sutton, we would be extremely grateful if you could complete the following short survey:
https://forms.office.com/e/swsnFC9jmK
Your feedback will help to:
Identify gaps in support experienced by parent/carers, ensure that the pilot service is informed by parent/carers and that families receive the help that they need, and improve coordination between services.
The survey should take approximately 15-20 mins to complete; it is open until 23rd June 2025.
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Diana Salgado, Clinial Service Lead for the Leads Based Model team, through the email:
