This year’s Outcome Report summarizes a national workshop hosted by Lehigh University to address the crucial role of industry–university partnerships in doctoral education. It brought together high-level stakeholders in technological advancement from across industry, government, and academia. The group examined key limitations in the current pipeline from STEM graduate programs into professional research environments and outlined how they can be improved through a student-centered paradigm for graduate education. Using Lehigh University’s P3 program as a working example, the report details the essential features of a graduate education process that promotes innovation in industry–university partnerships: structured industry residencies for doctoral students, cross-sector mentorship, streamlined collaboration practices, and training in identified core competencies beyond technical preparation.
See below for the key outcomes and recommended actions from this year’s workshop.
