Growing your own food can help you grow nutritionally, physically and mentally stronger! Planting is a great stress relief, and good exercise. You don't even need a yard! Plants need water, sun and air to grow. Nutrients will be important to keep them healthy, and these will be passed to you when you eat the plant. There are many ways to get a plant to grow, so here are some basic directions.
Your plant will need food (Sun) , water, nutrients and space to grow. If you provide good soil and plenty of water, OR provide protection for the roots and water with nutrients in it, the plant will grow. You can grow a plant in any container, as long as the roots can get both moisture and air. MOST plants can't grow with their roots under water. The right amount of water is key. Only water your plant when the soil begins to dry out.
Traditionally, a seed would warm in the soil, sprout when watered, and use minerals from the soil to grow strong, such as calcium and nitrogen. Its roots anchor it and absorb water and minerals dissolved in water. Its stem grows up toward the sun, so that the leaves can absorb sunlight. Place your plant where it will get sun, but not get too hot all day.
If you receive a plant, it has some nutrients in its soil. You can continue to provide them by buying a fertilizer like Miracle Gro or by using compost. Compost is available in free piles behind our libraries, where there is mulch. Look at the bottom of the pile for the decayed material. Making compost is nature's way of providing nutrients. When any plant material rots away, the nutrients are released to be used again by a plant. You can make your own kitchen compost pile at home. If you add worms to it, it will decay quickly (3 months).
HEALTHY SOIL is so important for healthy gardens. There is a new Netflix movie, Kiss The Ground, that explains the link between the soil and our future.
If you are growing your own food, be sure to use soil with nutrients, such as from compost or vegetable fertilizer. If you compost your food scraps with worms, you will use your kitchen waste to create good fertilizer for free! Go to the LEARN MORE page for links about composting and worm composting.
