Prof. Norman Jackson

Norman is Emeritus Professor of the University of Surrey, England, and Founder of ‘Lifewide Education’ and ‘Creative Academic’. Formerly a geologist, he went on to work in the HE sector, taking on different roles that include Director of the Surrey Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (SCEPTrE) at the University of Surrey.

At the Higher Education Academy, Norman led work on ‘creativity in higher education’. As Director of SCEPTrE, he developed and applied the idea of lifewide learning and education to give meaning to the concept of lifelong learning. Norman is also a writer and publisher.

Jimmy is a Further and Higher Education professional with 10 years’ experience in the sector. He has held various roles that have included managing cross-college personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education and enrichment programmes.

He has developed and led campaigns on campus to support students and has involved students in the creation. He is an advocate for students, ensuring he works closely with a range of organisations and professionals to ensure they have the tools and information they need to progress.

Jimmy joined The Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) in June 2021 as Education Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber on the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme. Most recently, he joined the university student engagement team, helping to shape the content and delivery of the programme to support university staff and students’ knowledge and awareness of gaming and gambling related harm.

Jimmy Parkin

Lilian Joy

Lilian is an educational adviser at the University of York, who is passionate about staff development and the 'learning' in technology-enhanced learning. She has over 28 years' experience as a teacher and trainer and has worked on several UK and European teaching and learning projects, staff development programmes and inclusive learning projects. She is also one of the hosts of the Future Teacher 3.0 webinar series. Her current research interests include building capacities for active learning, the experience of disabled staff and students, accessible maths and appreciative inquiry as a model for staff development.

Amy is a qualified secondary teacher and has 7 years’ experience working with children and young people within inner city secondary schools. She also has experience in outreach projects, working in conjunction with Bradford Council, as well as organising and leading on continuous professional development programmes, developing content and resources for schools and youth organisations.

Amy Bussey

Alison Smith

Alison is an artist, maker and educator based in Leeds. She creates lit sculptures and immersive light installations, using recycled materials transformed through textile processes.

Alison often cites pieces outdoors in natural environments. Ecological narratives are central to her practice and she often collaborates with scientists, creating pieces which explore the destruction of coral reefs and the decline of insect populations. Her recent installation, Climate Canopy, was developed in partnership with the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, and interprets 170 years of climate data as an immersive light sculpture. This piece was exhibited at Light Night Leeds and COP26 in Autumn 2021. Other key pieces she has worked on include, The Indestructible Reef and The Nectary, which have been exhibited at events and festivals across the North.

Alongside her artistic practice, Alison has 10 years’ experience delivering participatory art activity, and is the Engagement Curator at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds where she engages audiences with contemporary sculpture.

Aneta is a Senior Lecturer in Education at Keele University. Her research interests are in critical studies of internationalisation. She focuses on epistemic equality and teaching excellence.

Aneta recently curated a special issue for Teaching in Higher Education on complexities and complicities of decolonising higher education.

Dr Aneta Hayes

Prof. Alison James

Alison is a national teaching fellow, principal fellow of the HEA, and Professor Emerita of the University of Winchester. She has held a number of senior roles, including Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching (London College of Fashion) and Director of Academic Quality and Development (University of Winchester). As well as being an accredited LEGO Serious Play facilitator, she is an HE consultant and experienced professional coach.

She has co-authored and co-edited books which include Engaging Imagination: helping students become creative and reflective thinkers, with Professor Stephen Brookfield and The Power of Play in HE: creativity in Tertiary Learning with Dr Chrissi Nerantzi.

She has worked extensively in curriculum design and staff development and taught numerous subjects such as modern foreign languages, aspects of media, cultural studies, personal and professional development, reflective practice, academic writing and study skills, and teacher training. She has also concluded a three-year study into the use and value of play in HE, funded by the ImaginationLab Foundation.

Helen’s career in educational development spans over two decades and has included leading roles in UK-wide learning and teaching enhancement projects and organisations, as an independent consultant collaborating with colleagues in the UK, USA and Australia, and institutional roles (currently, Deputy Director of Academic Practice at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK).

She has broad interests across a range of learning, teaching and assessment themes with a passion for supporting colleagues’ professional development. Her current research is exploring the characteristics of expertise in higher education teachers.

She holds a Senior Fellowship of the Staff & Educational Development Association (SFSEDA), a National Teaching Fellowship (NTF), is a principal fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Queensland.

Prof. Helen King

Charlotte Bonner

Charlotte has over fifteen years’ experience working in the sustainability and education sectors, leading transformational engagement and development programmes.

She is the National Head of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at the Education and Training Foundation where she is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of their ESD work as well as being the policy and advocacy lead for sustainability.

Prior to joining the ETF, she was a keystone of the National Union of Students’ (NUS) sustainability work, most notably project managing the UNESCO ESD award-winning Green Impact programme from its inception.

She is one of the co-founders of Students Organising for Sustainability International and led on their partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme. She has previously held senior teaching associate positions at the University of Bristol and was a sustainability consultant prior to her tenure at NUS.

Charlotte has an MSc in energy and environmental technologies and is a member of both the Institution of Environmental Managers and Assessors and the Society of Education and Training. She’s part of the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education’s Green Apprenticeship Advisory Community and sits on the COP26 Education and Skills Committee.

Mark is the founder and director of L30 Relational Systems and has over 20 years’ experience of working with organisations large and small, both nationally and internationally. Mark has been involved in the national development of restorative practices since the late 1990s.

Mark is the author of Amazon's number 1 best-selling book – Independent Thinking on Restorative Practice.

Mark has delivered training, seminars, workshops and keynote speeches locally, nationally and internationally. He has advised on national policy and practice development since 2005 and was part of a small group which rewrote the national best practice guidance for restorative practitioners in 2012.

He currently works with many schools and organisations nationally, working across the system to improve outcomes and impact.

Mark is an associate for Research in Practice (RIP) and Independent Thinking Limited (ITL).

He is also trained as an FGC coordinator and is a licensed NLP Master Practitioner.

Mark Finnis

Dean Beadle

Dean has spent eighteen years delivering over nine hundred conference keynotes, inset training sessions, parent talks, workshops and seminars across the UK and abroad, sharing his experiences of being autistic. Dean's work has always centred on improving understanding of autistic needs and experiences so that autistic students can be better supported, empowered and valued in any setting.

Dean is also a former journalist, having written for local, regional and national publications. For eighteen months, he edited the National Autistic Society's Autism In Practice professional newsletter, which was read by subscribers in 90 countries.

Dean has sung at conferences, charity balls and festivals as well as touring his show 'My Life In Songs And Stories'. In 2020, he released the song 'Me And Your Normal Are Done' with neurodivergent band Aukestra.

Alongside that, Dean is proud to be honorary charity president of AP Cymru and patron of One-to-One Enfield and SPACE Hertfordshire.

Jo is here to bring some much needed Empathy and positive energy into this world! Sean Harris

Sean is a part-time doctoral researcher with Teesside University investigating poverty in schools and how we tackle this in classrooms. Sean is also Trust Improvement Lead at Tees Valley Education Trust in the North Eastof England. He is a published author in the fields of education, community work and theology. Sean enjoys learning about learning, sharpening his practice with the help of mentees and thinking about the ‘so what?’ of research in relation to our classrooms. Sean is a visiting Fellow with Ambition Institute and has featured in a number of podcasts exploring the science of learning, educational disadvantage and leading curriculum.

Helen is Director at HM Education Consultancy Ltd and Little Red Hen International Ltd and provides high quality training, coaching and consultancy support in a range of UK and international contexts. Her portfolio is underpinned by her experience as a teacher, school leader and national strategies consultant. Developing people is Helen’s strongest motivation and she is committed to investing in professional learning.

In her current role, Helen is a consultant with a range of schools and Multi Academy Trusts to support improvement. She is also a Lead Training Consultant with Cambridge Assessment International Education and has worked with leaders and teachers across the world to develop their effectiveness. In addition, Helen works with other global organisations including ECIS and High Performance Learning to transform schools and support improvement. She is also an accredited senior practitioner coach with the European Coaching and Mentoring Council and works with school leaders and teachers, empowering them to lead change and secure impact.

Having spent a varied career in a variety of educational roles and contexts, Rebecca is currently focused on completing a PhD in Psychology in Education at the University of York, where she is researching self-efficacy beliefs related to teaching and teacher mentoring.

Ben Smith

Ben has worked in education for 10 years; first as a teaching assistant and now as a teacher. He has a degree in Criminology and completed his PGCE over two years at Shipley College. Ben has been a teacher of English and maths for 4 years. He mostly teaches entry 3 to level 2 learners on a variety of vocational courses. He also annually take part in Duke of Edinburgh for level 1 learners. Teaching both English and maths has allowed him to develop a sense of how both subjects tie together. It also sparked his interest in how language is used in maths.

John-Paul started his career in education in the early noughties, switching from various roles in the wholesale wine trade to train as a primary school teacher. Having honed his pedagogical skills teaching literacy and numeracy to ten and eleven year olds, he was offered the opportunity to work for the Prince's Trust, supporting young people in broader personal development and supporting maths and English. From there he was responsible for the operational management of several projects in North and West Yorkshire continuing to develop literacy, numeracy and employability skills in young people who were not in education, employment or training (NEET) and/or with learning difficulties. In 2014, he moved into Further Education in learning support manager role at Askham Bryan College and joined the Luminate Group at Harrogate College in 2020 from a similar role at Wakefield College.


While all aspects of Special Education Needs are of interest to him, dyslexia and ADHD are a particular focus, having, as they do, a personal family resonance.

John-Paul Wordsworth

Drew Naylor

Drew has a keen interest in the ways in which culture is created and find satisfaction in watching the world change, applying theoretical concepts to the spaces, finally drawing conclusions from the lines created within the Digital Age, and the possible impact it plays on the rise of extremism. He is also passionate about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and finds it to be the cornerstone of any establishment willing to participate in the new and ever changing world.

Rob is a writer, and you can tell because of all the things he does to avoid writing. He teaches video game design, plays guitar and performs poetry - anything but actually sit down and get on with puting words on the page. He does write a couple of blogs, which I suppose is writing, but it’s mostly just rants about arguments he lost years ago, or things he thinks about Doctor Who, so that probably doesn’t count.

Rob has been working with Leeds City College, or one of its ancestors, for nearly 20 years and in that time has taught Media, Film Studies and Computer Games Design. Recently he moved into management and found he quite enjoyed that, especially the bit where everyone else went to do the hard work and he got to think about education.

Lee Bloomfield

Lee has been working for the Luminate Group since 2005 and is now a programme manager in the Music Performance & Music Production department at Quarry Hill.

Phil is a computer games development teacher who has worked in the sector since 2007. He is also the director of Sleepy Brain Studios Ltd. a company that makes games.

He has recently played a key role in a number of projects for larger games, working with iHobo as a game designer and level designer. Philip has an undergraduate degree in Theology and Philosophy, as well as a master’s in Game Audio.


Phil Asquith

Steph Siviter

Steph is an English teacher, who has also specialised in literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and functional skills since 2004. She started her Further Education career over 10 years ago in the West Midlands before moving to Leeds.


She holds two PGCE's - one in Primary education and one in FE.She is currently studying for a Masters in Digital Education.


Fran has worked as a teacher for Leeds City College for eight years and has a wealth of experience teaching young people and adults within the health and social care department.


She is part of the LGBTQ community and is passionate about LGBTQ rights and creating safe spaces for people to be themselves without fear.

Fran McClean

Ryan Woods

Ryan is the programme manager for film and screen media at University Centre Leeds. He has a varied background in fiction and documentary, both domestic and international. He has worked in promotional videos and live music events for BBC Introducing West Yorkshire. He has worked for Apple Education UK and various arts-based programmes throughout the region.


His research interests are in the use of depth psychology and feminist theory in the analysis of film and screen studies.

Cindy is an Assessor at Leeds City College, delivering apprenticeship standards for the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship and Level 3 Early Years Educator. To date, all the apprentices that she has guided through the Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship have gained distinctions.


Cindy hopes to give guidance on how to best make the use of teaching assistants at Leeds City College and how they can get involved in the planning, delivery and assessment for learning, using innovative ways to motivate and encourage students.

Scott is interested in the future of creative industries in the post surveillance capitalism world.

Clayton is a PE Teacher. After university he began working in secondary schools, and has had a number of roles, including teaching assistant, isolation manager and head of year.

He enjoyed classroom teaching rather than the practical element of PE Teaching and also did some Maths teaching as part of his training. He decided teaching Maths would work for him and haven't looked back. Clayton has been teaching maths since starting at Leeds City Academy, winning an award at the annual event before moving to LCC as a CL and then progressing to PM. He enjoys developing his practice and staying up to date with education research through podcasts and has also recently been accepted to become a professional development lead for LCC through the Centre for Excellence in Maths.

Peter Ejedewe

Peter is a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University and University of Warwick, where he focused on social injustice and 'bridging the gap between further and higher education.


He has worked for Leeds City College since 2007 and has recently developed a curriculum on Black & Asian British history, as a means to address the social and academic need for greater cultural understanding and streaming of topics to include the rich history students from minority backgrounds.


Tamas is an HE Engineering programme manager at University Centre Leeds.


He earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2007 and worked on several research projects at the Eotvos Lorand University (Budapest), the Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) and at the University of Leeds.


He has 26 publications in refereed international scientific journals and also two published books entitled "Modelling of thermal plasma processes: From the Titan's atmosphere to the industry" and "Science Star: The joyful spring-child”


He has also developed the engineering curriculum within the HE STEM department.


Tamas Kovacs

Huda Sheikh Shahid

Huda has worked at Leeds City College for three years, teaching a number of subjects that include; maths, engineering design projects, materials engineering, chemistry and physics. She is now looking into enhancing classroom practices to help maintain the efficiency of learning specifically through TikTok. She is also looking into climate change products to widen her knowledge in this field.


She enjoys spending time with her family and her dog Sky.

Kaye is the Deputy Head of Teaching Learning and Assessment across Luminate’s FE colleges.


She has over 15 years’ experience teaching in FE on a wide variety of childcare and education based curriculums, from Entry level to Level 4.


Over the last five years, Kaye has attained her QTS / ATS and CTeach status alongside a CMI Level 7 qualification in leadership and management.


Within her current role, Kaye leads a team of specialist advanced practitioners, supporting the improvement of TLA across the organisation.

Steph is an English teacher and advanced practitioner with 12 years' experience.


With a keen interest in teaching & learning that supports inclusivity, she hopes through her work, to use the 'Teach To the Top and Scaffold Up' technique to enable progress for every learner, and promote inclusivity and equality of opportunity for all.

Laura is a music teacher, writer, researcher and advanced practitioner (TLA) with a keen interest in the role of education in social justice. Laura completed her Masters in Education at the University of Sheffield, researching the potential effects of poverty on learning and possible intervention strategies to support the academic development of low socio-economic learners.


Laura is currently working towards her doctorate in education with support from the Association of College's Research Further initiative, where she continues to research teaching and learning strategies to address and alleviate the attainment gap in post-compulsory education. Laura's primary research interests lie in critical pedagogy and cognitive justice.


Laura Kayes

Brendon Jones

Working across the entire Luminate Group; Brendon provides coaching, mentoring and training whilst developing the Digital CPD strand aimed at empowering all staff members to experiment and develop digital learning while linking the educational technology to teaching and learning.


Brendon is dedicated to unlocking potential in the classroom and the staffroom. With a passion for technology enhanced education, he works tirelessly to provide support and develop resources for educators to help them understand how to embed technology in an impactful and meaningful way. With experience spanning across industry and (Secondary, Further and Higher) education, He has a broad range of skills and knowledge to draw upon to find solutions and drive improvement. At the core of Brendon’s approach is an emphasis on high-quality teaching, learning and assessment with the learner’s experiences and engagement a central focus.


Dawn is an advanced practitioner working for the Luminate Education Group within the further education provision. She has over 20 years of English teaching experience in FE ranging from GCSE to HE and has specialised in working with reluctant learners at all levels. Studying for a PhD, Dawn is committed to action research and working collaboratively with colleagues across the FE sector in order to share good practice and support teachers in delivering high quality learning experiences to all students. She is resident AP for Keighley and Harrogate colleges and currently teaches GCSE English Language.


Dawn Smith

Craig Lane

Craig is a functional skills specialist and Deputy Head of Department at Leeds City College.


Craig leads on providing English and maths training for businesses, working on both AEB funded provision and on external Apprenticeship advice and delivery. He created and manages the Functional Skills Delivery Network, a LinkedIn group that provides a space for practitioners to share good practice and information on all aspects of delivery, including: Quality Assurance,

Accreditation, Events & Training. As part of this, the Network will be holding it's first ever Conference on the 11th of July.


Craig also works closely with Awarding organisations and sits on two Focus Panels, one for Gateway and the other for NCFE, to develop new and relevent qualifications.


He also works extremely closely with BKSB and as a Superuser, has delivered training courses to external organisations and Employer Providers on the proficient and effective use of the system, to aid assessment and target individual learner development.

Mitch is the Head of Engineering at Printworks. Mitch has been supporting in developing the Luminate Group STEM Strategy and all the focus groups that feed from that. She is passionate about supporting and providing a strong, realistic pathway for all our learners. She believes that we all need to work together to raise the aspirations of the community and put as many options in place as possible to support social mobility.


Mitch has worked for the college for 21 years across various departments and campuses, and values the position we have as a community college.

Mitch Scott

Lewis Freer

Lewis is an experienced teacher having worked in Secondary, College and University settings over the previous twenty years. A passionate student of Literature, he has also worked in Safeguarding and Pastoral Care during his career around the Leeds and Bradford area.

Katherine has worked in education for 18 years. Prior to this she was a youth worker. She started out in education as a Health & Social Care teacher before re-training as a SENCO. When she started at LCC in 2017 she moved into a pastoral role in the school of engineering.


Katherine ispassionate about pastoral care and improving the mental well-being of students. Working in the engin eering department has led her to take a great interest in male mental health and the promotion of healthy masculinity. In her spare time she play the drums, collect cacti and listen to vinyl records with her cats.

Katherine Ireland

Joanna Barrett

Joanna is the Deputy Head of Teaching, Learning and Assessment at Keighley College. She has over 17 years experience of FE teaching and managing programmes in the fields of early years education and supporting teaching & learning, following a successful career in the sector.


Joanna has recently achieved Advanced Teacher Status with the SET foundation and is an advocate for EdTech, having gained her Google level 1 and 2 certifications. Joanna currently teaches Level 3, supporting teaching and learning students at Keighley College.

Katie is an Advanced Practitioner in the central TLA team at Leeds City College, working with the Adult and Community, ESOL, Foundation Studies and Supported Engagement areas. She has worked at Leeds City College for 4 years, following time spent teaching in secondary schools in the UK and Spain. Her main subject is GCSE maths, but has taught in a variety of areas including languages and food. She studied Food and Nutrition at Newcastle University and followed with a PGCE at Durham University a few years later. She is now studying towards a Masters Degree in Education, also at Durham University.


Her current areas of interest include coaching, student engagement and training for Early Career Teachers.

Katie Shea

Natasha Armitage-Evans

Natasha is Head of Teaching, Learning & Assessment across the FE Colleges and leads the dedicated team of TLA deputies and Advanced Practitioners that drive quality improvement and the development of teaching and delivery staff across the organisation. Previous roles as a Secondary PE Teacher, Head of department, Teacher Educator and Advanced Practitioner have developed Natasha's expertise across the Secondary, FE and HE sectors. Completing her MA in Teaching in 2011 Natasha's dissertation focused on 'Motivating Girls in Physical Education.' Natasha is currently in the process of completing her MSc in Leadership & Management and has a keen interest in educational research and transformational leadership.

With a background in digital agencies and e-commerce platforms, Amy has worked with a huge range of tech-forward companies, each with a unique business approach. Amy has qualifications in Education & Training, Counselling, a degree in Film Making and a Level 2 in Google for Education, and is now working towards her Google Trainer status. She has spoken at a number of events including Jisc Connect More and the Google Reference College event, Digital Innovation: Transforming Education. She was interviewed in Tes about the independent learning summer camp ‘SkillsFest’ she co-created and was featured on the Tes FE podcast. Amy now works as an ilearn Lead at Park Lane to build independent learners across all of LCC’s FE colleges.

Nathan Edwards

Nathan is passionate about helping people fulfill their potential by finding ways to overcome personal obstacles, including Special Education Needs, disabilities, or personal well-being difficulties.

Originally from Birmingham, Matt came to study for my Computing degree in Yorkshire and has stayed ever since. Whilst in his placement year, he really enjoyed IT training and from there did his PGCE and in 2002 began teaching IT in FE. After an amazing year teaching English in Japan, Matt joined the college and over 16 years later is still a part of the college. Matt moved into teaching English & maths and was made a CL and then a Programme Manager at Printworks in 2016. For the last 3 years, he has been an active part of the Centre for Excellence in Maths project and was accepted as an Action Research lead this past academic year. The CfEM project role has also enabled him to participate in collaborating with a range of interesting and innovative colleges and organisations.

Matt Hanson

Melissa Bowes

Melissa has over ten years’ experience teaching English in secondary education (11-18) before moving to FE as an Advanced Practitioner for English in January 2022. She is a Google Certified Trainer and has delivered EdTech training across a large multi-academy trust and nationally as part of the DfE’s EdTech Demonstrator Programme. Melissa is passionate about integrating the use of EdTech in the classroom and the impact it can have on student outcomes.

Bodhini is the ilearn Lead for Quarry Hill and The Annexe. Her focus is exploring innovative ways of delivering independent skills to students.


Championing Digital skills and hoping to become an innovator to help learning and teaching to be fluid and fun task. Enthusiastic about stretching and challenging for her team and students to ensure that the learning is for everyone and continuous!


Experienced Coach with a demonstrated history of working in the Apprenticeship accounting industry. Skilled in delivering apprenticeship with a high success rate, presenting and delivering skills and behaviours, client management, training students and teachers in Digital Skills, Team Management, and Customer Service.
