Don't start at the beginning!
In the exam, sometimes people panic and start writing about alarm clocks going off. This leads to rambling stories where nothing really happens. To get top marks for structure (AO5), you need a plan.
The "Problem First" Method
As shown in the diagram, we recommend planning out of order to ensure your story works:
Start with the Problem (Step 1): Use your planning space to decide on your main event first. If you know the big thing that happens in the middle, you won't get lost.
Build around it: Once the problem is set, decide how you get there (Build-up) and how the character reacts (Reaction).
Finally, plan your Opening and Resolution. This ensures your ending is just as strong as your beginning.
Remember: You plan in this order, but you write chronologically.
