During this project we learned so much about SDGs. One of them that directly correlates to our project is 14.2, protecting and restoring ecosystems. It correlates to our project since we are trying to restore and keep our local ecosystems safe and healthy. By adopting from and helping out our local Pacific Marine Mammal Center, we are directly impacting this SDG.
During the course of applying what we experienced in Marine Biology to an action plan, we learned more about sustainability and how we can create positive change in our community.
After interviewing staff at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, we took action by raising awareness about this organization and also by fundraising to adopt two marine mammals.
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center uses research, education, and collaboration to rehabilitate and release marine mammals back into the ocean.
After completing this project, the term “active global citizen” began to appear as something more attainable than it was to begin with. In today’s society, we have fallen into a belief that our individual actions aren’t very important because we believe they do not make much of a difference. However, through this project our group discovered that we can make a difference. By adopting two mammals at the end of the project, we helped fund the rehabilitation of two living beings. Although making a large impact seems impossible, it is evident that our intentional goal to be an “active global citizen” was achieved.
