What is an Academy?
The Academy of Life Sciences is an exclusive learning community where students enroll using only 1 elective credit per semester, allowing student to pursue other elective interests while in the academy. Academies engage in cross-curricular activities with other core subjects such as Science and Math, in order to demonstrate relevance to their instruction. Students will be exposed to career exploration opportunities such as job shadowing, internships, extended classroom trips, and guest speakers from local businesses.
Students will develop a working resume, earn certifications such as: First Aid, BLS CPR, OSHA, and Stop the Bleed. In addition, students benefit from the practice of interviewing with local business employers at our annual Student-2-Business Networking Event.
This academy is aligned and affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a non-profit organization that has created a model of instruction based on the main components of: curriculum & academies function as dynamic partnerships between schools, teachers, administrators, volunteers, and an active advisory board led by industry professionals. All curriculum meets standards of the NC Department Public of Instruction.

Through the Health Science Academy, you’ll explore the diverse careers within the healthcare field, gain an in-depth understanding of each body system, and earn valuable certifications that can benefit you in college or the workforce.
As a member of the Academy of Life Sciences, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from inspiring guest speakers, go on exciting field trips, and engage in hands-on classroom activities. Plus, you’ll make a meaningful impact by participating in fundraisers and community service events.
