Design and product coordinator for Muraspec wallcoverings who specialise in commercial and bespoke wallcoverings.
I do a bit of everything! Trend research (researching what’s popular to inform designs), product management, creating technical drawings, management of bespoke products, sending samples for approval and a bit of marketing (advertising/promoting products).
On an average day I work at a computer in an office as part of as small team. I produce a lot of forms and spreadsheets of information. It also involves chasing people to get things done!
I took GCSE Art, A-Level Art and undertook a foundation course in Art and Design. I also have a degree in Multimedia Textile Design from Loughborough University. At first I started Illustration but I changed my mind and switched to Textiles. I have a portfolio of design work I use in interviews. Your attitude and personality is also really important though. I think my company were looking for someone who was personable and could fit in with the company. The right personality and attitude means you can be taught anything.
Yes absolutely. Don’t worry about trying to work out specifically what you want to do, it’s really hard! Start a journal on getting to know yourself and what is important to you. Write down everything – your favourite colours, what makes you happy, your morals, what you enjoy, what you don’t like. These things will change over time. When I was younger I wanted to be a make-up artist, now that makes me cringe. Over 10 years I realised that material things aren’t important to me and I became interested in zero waste. The company I work for specialises in materials that are more environmentally friendly. It’s only by knowing myself more and meeting new and different people that I got better at figuring this out.
