I am a Senior Design Engineer.
Clients come to us with problems and I used computer aided design (CAD) to develop solutions for example designing products for them. An example being telecommunication street cabinets.
I work in a small team and am mostly computer based using Solid Works and Creo (CAD) and some time will also be spend in the workshop building prototypes and also visiting clients.
I did GCSEs in both Art and DT. I took Graphic Design, Maths and DT at A-Level. Studying Art at GCSE enabled me to take up A-Level Graphics. At Loughborough University I studied Product Design and Manufacture which is a mechanical engineering degree. In terms of my experience post university I spent 4 years working for a research and development company, 4 years at a product development company, working with fibre optic solutions. Currently I am a senior designers at Round Peg which is a small design consultancy near Cambridge.
My advice is to find your strengths and play to them. It’s also very important to work hard. Things do not happen overnight.
