Task 1:Learn about the artist Mark Powell. Spend 10 minutes researching his website and answer these questions in your books:
Add the title: Mark Powell
Why does he draw in biro?
Why does he draw on found materials (e.g. envelopes, old postcards)?
How does he use line?
Task 2: Create your own Mark Powell style drawing.
1.If you are at home: Find a piece of found material, for example: a take away menu, newspaper, cut it to be the same size as your sketchbook.
If you are in school: there should some photocopied old letters in the Art resources box, please ask the teacher supervising.
2.Find a biro (any colour is fine, black is best)
3.Find a simple still life, everyday object to copy, it could be an apple, mug. You can Google an image if you can’t find one
4.Complete your drawing onto the found material, stick it into your sketchbook.
Hot Challenge:
Be brave and try drawing your shoes, work quickly to create the outline, then add in tone by overlaying the biro.
Extra HOT challenge:
Create another drawing, this time try and copy this eye drawing by Powell.Draw the outline lightly in biro, if you make mistake simply draw over it. Add layers of biro to show tone, experiment with angling the pen to get a lighter mark. Leave the paper bare for the highlights.
