Welcome to 7th Grade Social Studies!
This year we will be using an online program called Discovery Education. It includes readings, videos and several fun activities as well as short assessments. They will keep an interactive notebook throughout the year. I will be working with students on reading strategies for non-fiction.
I will also add some of my favorite projects to keep class fun and interesting such as a break up text from the colonists to King George, and many more. Activities like persuading a sibling to convert to a Loyalist or Patriot helps students use the facts they learn for a higher purpose than memorizing such as to understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create.
Topics we will study include:
Current events from an objective, non partisan source made for schools.
The American Revolution Jefferson
The Articles of Confederation The War of 1812
Creating a Government The Native Experience
The Bill of Rights Westward Expansion
Washington’s Presidency Life in the West
There will not be homework in this class, but students will need to finish the classwork in the allotted time. Assignments will be posted on Google Classroom and I will link your email address so you are notified if they go beyond due dates. Late work is accepted. Keep an eye on Genesis to see the grades I post. I will post missing assignment values, but will replace it if it is made up and handed in.
This year students are enjoying interacting with our class pet Frito the corn snake. He reminds me of 7th graders in the sense that occasionally he sheds his skin and finds this growth painful resulting in very cranky behavior for a while that then subsides and his normal affable self returns. Growth is painful and does make us cranky so if you are dealing with a moody teenager, just remind yourself they are shedding and will come back around.
I look forward to a great year. Reach out anytime at sdilzer@lebtwpk8.org
