February is Read-A-Thon Month!
February is Read-A-Thon Month!
Each February we maximize this cozy, indoor season by challenging students to set SMART goals and practice their reading skills! Students have the opportunity to earn prizes as they work toward their fundraising and reading goals.
K-7th graders (and any 8th-11th graders who want to join in!) will...
Reach out to family and friends and invite them to participate by making pledges for each minute read in the month of February using the student's BetterWorld donation page. (Short videos of students explaining the reading challenge and inviting family members to sponsor their reading are easy, effective and convenient to share!) All pledges need to be collected by Friday, February 6th.
Begin tracking the minutes as of Sunday, February 1st using a reading tracker like this one! (Personalized reading trackers will be sent home at the end of Week 20.)
Bring the tracker to school each week and give to Ms. Cori to have their minutes recorded and added to class and school-wide goal tracking charts. (Don't worry - we'll send it back home the same day.)
Celebrate with prizes when fundraising milestones and reading goals are met!
At the end of the month when all reading logs have been tallied, BetterWorld will conveniently and securely facilitate the collection of all donations pledged.
Let's talk PRIZES!
Prizes can be earned by hitting fundraising milestones as well as individual and corporate reading goals! Check out the milestones and prizes available in the graphic below.
Frequently Asked Questions:
We're so glad you'll be joining us! Eight-11th graders can make sure their minutes and fundraising count by filling out this opt-in form.
Nope! While $1/minute pledges would be awesome, pledges can be as small as $0.05/minute (which comes out to $3/hour). Every little bit helps, and it all adds up!
Yes! Loved ones wanting to give flat donations have 2 options:
1) When hitting "Donate" on your student's donation page, donors will have the option of selecting "Donate Now" or "Pledge per hours read." "Pledge per hours read," is the default selection, but donors who want to make an immediate flat donation can indicate their desired donation amount and submit it immediately by choosing "Donate Now."
2) If a donor wants to participate in the pledge side of the read-a-thon, but worries their reader may overshoot their reading goal beyond what they're willing to support, BetterWorld allows donors to cap their donation at any amount chosen by the donor. This effectively allows donors to set the maximum amount they want to donate. Since donations are collected at the end of the month in a single, convenient and secure transaction, a capped donation will function as a flat donation in the amount the donor intended, provided the reader hits that reading benchmark.
(Example: Jane's reading goal is 300 minutes (5 hours). Grandpa wants to just give $50. Grandpa can give $10/hour which will total $50 if Jane reads exactly 300 minutes. When making the pledge, Grandpa can indicate a cap of $50 so that if Jane reads more than 300 minutes, Grandpa's final donation will still be $50, exactly as he intended.)
The donation pages will only show donations that have been fully processed. Because pledges aren't processed until the end of the month when final reading times have been input, the pledges still have the ability to be changed or cancelled through the month of February. The donation page fund tracker will update with the pledged funds when the pledges become actual donations.
We realize this is frustrating, confusing and maybe even demoralizing - now that we're aware of this limitation we are considering ways to periodically update everyone with where their fundraising efforts are, pledges included.
If a donor wants their donation to show up on their student's page immediately, they can make it as a one-time donation, rather than a pledge using the "Donate Now" button, rather than the "Pledge per hour read" defaulted button.
We've got you! You've got 2 options:
Search for the email from Marissa Maksimov with "Read-a-thon Page Link" as the subject line.
If you can't find the email, you can still figure out your student's donation page by using the following template:
https://learnwellcollective.betterworld.org/campaigns/learnwell-read-thon-2025/p/firstname-lastname+s-read-a-thon-page
I.e. Jane Doe's read-a-thon page would be:
https://learnwellcollective.betterworld.org/campaigns/learnwell-read-thon-2025/p/jane-does-read-a-thon-page
Still struggling? No worries - email cori.panyard@learnwellcollective.org and we can check the master list.
No worries! Take a picture and send it to cori.panyard@learnwellcollective.org and we'll add your student's minutes to our master count.
You can check out all the milestones and prizes HERE or just above this FAQ section. Prizes will be awarded at a celebration assembly in early March.
Absolutely! Reading for school, reading for fun, listening to someone else read, listening to an audiobook, e-books, e-readers, magazines, graphic novels - it all counts!
The donations received will go straight into the Learnwell Annual Fund, which allows us to continue offering education for children based on our Learnwell core values: Intentional Margin, Deep Faith, Excellent Education, and Authentic Community. If you have additional questions about how our Learnwell Annual Fund benefits your student, please feel free to reach out!
