Framework for the Future
Overview
Monrovia Unified is committed to providing all students with an exceptional education, ensuring all graduates are fully prepared for college, career, and life. Last Spring, a diverse group of individuals was asked to come together to help define what's possible for MUSD students, families, staff, and our community. We are excited to share that this group kicked off designing the MUSD Framework for the Future on August 26th and will continue to work together through the 2022-2023 school year. You can follow the journey and stay "in the know" through this website and be assured that our groups' work will:
Be outcome driven
Ensure diverse community perspectives
Include processes for meaningful participation
Be iterative, including multiple feedback loops
Push us to be future/forward thinking
Anchor on the student experiences we aspire to achieve
Drive impact and decision making
The Framework for the Future will provide a north star that defines the outcomes, experiences and conditions to inform decision-making and prioritization.
Ultimately, it will help us to achieve our vision to be an exemplary school district by empowering all students to reach their highest potential through innovative, engaging, and personalized learning experiences.
The MUSD Framework will be designed in 3 parts. Part 1 is defining the whole-learner outcomes, aka "Learner Profile." Next we will draft the MUSD learning model that defines the types of experiences learners need to work toward the outcomes. Finally, we will work on defining the enabling conditions and drafting a strategic plan that supports the districts focus over the next 3-5 years.
Why do we need a learner profile?
A learner profile supports the following shifts to set systems up such that ALL students can reach their full potential.
A learner profile is
A visual representation of the essential skills and habits of mind students should have when they graduate to be successful.
Aspirational, memorable, and easily communicated to students, parents, faculty, and staff. Consider limiting to 4-8 outcomes.
Expanded outcomes for learners, what success looks like; capturing evidence of the whole child through competencies that are transferable, interdisciplinary, and relevant to the learner in the modern world.
A commitment to (re)design school in a way that ensures every student can succeed in fulfilling the profile’s vision for learners.
Why do we need a learning model?
A learning model supports the following shifts in instructional design and delivery such that ALL students can can achieve the defined learner profile outcomes:
The Learning Model
Provides a catalyst to align systems, processes, and structures necessary to support students in developing and demonstrating the outcomes.
It’s the framework for pedagogical change.
Frames the fence posts. Learning Models provide both a shared vision and shared language for what teaching and learning should be across the school community. However, they are not scripted curriculum; they leave plenty of room for educators creativity and flexibility.
Illuminates educator competencies. Every educator is on their own learner-centered journey. A Learning Model can include educator competencies that serve as:
A personalized guide for professional development & growth for each teacher
A framework for celebrating growth and supporting gaps across groups of educators in a school
